San Diego unions push transaction tax

You will not see people who make money on the markets on any list. Their money is not in the U.S. This is because people that make money in the U.S. are thought of as predators, and will be punished for selling short in a bear market, or perhaps for margining heavily in the bond market anticipating a drop in stocks. People that don't understand trading shouldn't be trading. Don, in all of the years I've read you - and even in understanding your radical shift in economic thought - you know this. Warning to all people who have 401k's or other such nonsense: You are at the mercy of someone else. I never bought into a 401k. When it was initially offered, I asked what it was all about. The explanation, in a nutshell, was that I would give a percentage of my money to an organization that would invest it in stocks, and I would become more wealthy when I decided to retire. That's what I was told. What I heard was, "I'm going to Las Vegas, give me your money and I'll shoot craps with it and bring you back your profits." My wife, who didn't listen to my advice, has a completely wrecked 401k. She'll be lucky if she makes 2% on it by the time she's done with the thing. I could have done much better wagering ponies at Del Mar. That's not the fault of true traders. It's the fault of companies that take your money and pretend that the market is an investment rather than a gamble. Tell me that's not true, Don.

Molecular Gastronomy at... Harney Sushi?

Although I do understand Barb's point, yours hits closer to home with me. For $125.00 I feed my family for two weeks, all home-cooked food. And I'm not talking Hamburger Helper here, I'm talking 3 squares, loaded with healthy stuff, including meats for dinner. But I have spent far more than $125.00 on a dinner before, in better economic times. Was it worth it? Depends on what you can afford I reckon. I didn't think twice about it at the time and certainly have no regrets now.

Firefighters Extinguish Couch on Ocean Beach Street

The burning question (pun intended) that needs to be asked here is this: Did some nearby residents notice that their couch was on fire, saying, "Oh, holy crap, let's get it out of the house, quick, let's take it out into the street!" Or rather, did someone driving by notice the couch in the street and say to themselves, "Hey, look, there's a couch in the street. I know, I'll light it on fire!" Really, this is what needs to be answered here.

Those coming to Tijuana to enjoy the Batwings show might wish to park in the U.S. and either walk or catch a cab to Centro upon entering Mexico. Only 13 of the 24 vehicle lines are open, so the wait to return to the U.S. will be longer.

Busan: South Korea's Second City

Awesome, the paper is out! I'm on it. I'm a paper fiend. And I highly recommend considering getting that last China trip published, no idea if the Reader would take it as a cover story, but that was some of the best trip writing I've ever read. A wider audience deserves to read it. And you get broader latitude in the cover stories here, a lot of the sketchy parts that wouldn't fit in travel stories would work well in a cover story. I'll message you elsewhere with info if you want to pitch it.

A very much grittier version of Korea (in a good way) than I'm certain you can let loose in here, but fascinating stuff and very well-written, people who are interested deserve to know!

Lemon Grove Abates Fire with Goats

It depends on the terrain and the type of brush. Goats certainly aren't hurting anything in Lemon Grove. They can be damaging in more remote areas, where nature goes unchecked and unimpeded. The act of introducing a herd of goats in some places can actually increase new brush, as the normal act of spread of seed isn't artificially helped by the goat's rapid and random chowing down and then delivering nice piles of fertilizer and seed in its wake. Of course, the flip side is that where goats can do environmental damage, those are the same areas where fire is a natural occurrence every decade or two in order to maintain the ecosystem properly. However, Lemon Grove is not one of those places.
