You're Not in Guaymas Anymore
Wow, if this Chula Vista location is anything like the Tijuana location, this is a generous review. I ate at the Tijuana location (about half the price of the Chula Vista store), and while it wasn't horrible, it certainly wasn't anything special. I understand that this column is dedicated to upscale, but in Tijuana it has been my experience that the best seafood is often found in unclassy, unpretentious places with plastic chairs. The best fish tacos you can eat, for example, are found at a busy cart at a sobre ruedas where they literally melt in your mouth; you'll never eat one from Rubios ever again. In downtown Tijuana on Sixth Street (Calle Sexta) about four blocks or so east of Revo, there are a few little places among the fish markets, those are the places for seafood in Tijuana. Probably more appropriate for Bedford than Wise, but the freshness and quality of the food is precisely what is lacking at the fancier places like Los Arcos.

Journal Puts Floatopia on Page One
I don't know what they're going to do nan, but I think they're going to be stuck with a more difficult decision at some point, because people are going to drink regardless of what they ban. I was a teen, once upon a time, and man, you couldn't make us do anything, I can't imagine that this generation is any different. Youngsters just want to have fun, and they will, they really don't care about the City Council. And really, I find it hard to blame them. Fiesta Island is realistically a good choice for them to acquiesce and find a happy medium.

Locked Out of Revenues
For anyone interested, it is a certainty that the AAA team in Portland will play next season at Lake Elsinore, sharing that facility with the high-A Storm. The team will be bought by a group of investors being put together by Moorad. The price is estimated at around 25 million dollars for the minor league franchise. The stadium, wherever it's built, is estimated to cost around the same price, and will need to be built in time to open the 2012 season, according to requirements from the folks in charge of Minor League Baseball.

Oh, I don't know that I say anything better, AG, but I will confess that I'm sort of handcuffed, sometimes editors look at me with those eyes as though I had the capacity to put it any other way, and I reckon I must seem like an idiot to them. But thank you ma'am, I'll endeavor to be as honest as I possibly can about what I see here :) I think I'm lucky in so many ways, one of which is that I can peer right outside of my door and watch everything unfold, I'd love for that for everyone.

Kerry Steigerwalt of Pacific Law Center says he was the “fall guy”
@ 101 - 106: This February or March, I'm going to begin to pester the Reader management about this. The Reader is an amazing part of the community, from Baja to Orange County, the Pacific to the Imperial County Line. I'd never dream of asking them to host anything, simply to encourage the writers and contributors to gather in one spot on some summer's afternoon. Make it a pot luck. It would be the coolest things ever to shake some hands, exchange some nice words. I'd be willing to bring some of my World famous bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapeños and a main dish, maybe some seafood. Someone could bring lemonade, someone else potato salad. You would be surprised at how neat these casual get-togethers can be. The Reader might have a hundred reasons for not wishing to be involved, but I promise, when the time is ripe for the planning, I'll plead my case.

Journal Puts Floatopia on Page One
The thing about Aguirre - there is a correct way to persuade the public, and then there is Aquirre. You can be 100% correct and manage to tick off an entire city, and that is Aguirre. I have always been surprised that a public figure could be so insulting. If that guy had a fraction of an ounce of charisma and could somehow keep from practically calling the citizens of San Diego idiots, I can't imagine the amount of good he might have done in the course of his career serving the city. If you want to make a difference, you have to offer the people you want to help the opportunity to do it of their own accord. It isn't always about being right, but more often about showing people how they can make the right decisions. I know that mine is not a popular point of view in this thread, but I can't help but to bring it up. Of course the politicians have been a bunch of corrupt liars! But man, don't scold us as though we can't see the obvious, just hand us torches and tell us where the bastards ran off to, we're capable.

The Basketball Diaries
I think the film could've been done better, perhaps less dreamy and more cerebral. As usual, the problem with the film-from-the-book recipe is in trying to capture the author's brilliance and stupidity simultaneously, and unfortunately this one missed the mark enough to be noticeable to those of us who were familiar with Carroll previously. It would be interesting to read the perspective of someone who hadn't read the book, Carroll's poetry or musical stylings, and so on. I thought the casting was great, and the acting was good enough, but that the better and more compelling story was lost somewhere behind weirdly contrived direction, especially in the middle of the film. I still recommend this, flawed to whatever extent, because Carroll's story is worth the attempt to film it and therefore to watch the effort.

You're Not in Guaymas Anymore
Wow, if this Chula Vista location is anything like the Tijuana location, this is a generous review. I ate at the Tijuana location (about half the price of the Chula Vista store), and while it wasn't horrible, it certainly wasn't anything special. I understand that this column is dedicated to upscale, but in Tijuana it has been my experience that the best seafood is often found in unclassy, unpretentious places with plastic chairs. The best fish tacos you can eat, for example, are found at a busy cart at a sobre ruedas where they literally melt in your mouth; you'll never eat one from Rubios ever again. In downtown Tijuana on Sixth Street (Calle Sexta) about four blocks or so east of Revo, there are a few little places among the fish markets, those are the places for seafood in Tijuana. Probably more appropriate for Bedford than Wise, but the freshness and quality of the food is precisely what is lacking at the fancier places like Los Arcos.— July 28, 2010 12:39 p.m.

I don't know what they're going to do nan, but I think they're going to be stuck with a more difficult decision at some point, because people are going to drink regardless of what they ban. I was a teen, once upon a time, and man, you couldn't make us do anything, I can't imagine that this generation is any different. Youngsters just want to have fun, and they will, they really don't care about the City Council. And really, I find it hard to blame them. Fiesta Island is realistically a good choice for them to acquiesce and find a happy medium.— July 28, 2010 1:15 a.m.
Locked Out of Revenues
For anyone interested, it is a certainty that the AAA team in Portland will play next season at Lake Elsinore, sharing that facility with the high-A Storm. The team will be bought by a group of investors being put together by Moorad. The price is estimated at around 25 million dollars for the minor league franchise. The stadium, wherever it's built, is estimated to cost around the same price, and will need to be built in time to open the 2012 season, according to requirements from the folks in charge of Minor League Baseball.— July 27, 2010 8:33 p.m.

Oh, I don't know that I say anything better, AG, but I will confess that I'm sort of handcuffed, sometimes editors look at me with those eyes as though I had the capacity to put it any other way, and I reckon I must seem like an idiot to them. But thank you ma'am, I'll endeavor to be as honest as I possibly can about what I see here :) I think I'm lucky in so many ways, one of which is that I can peer right outside of my door and watch everything unfold, I'd love for that for everyone.— July 27, 2010 5:57 p.m.

@ 101 - 106: This February or March, I'm going to begin to pester the Reader management about this. The Reader is an amazing part of the community, from Baja to Orange County, the Pacific to the Imperial County Line. I'd never dream of asking them to host anything, simply to encourage the writers and contributors to gather in one spot on some summer's afternoon. Make it a pot luck. It would be the coolest things ever to shake some hands, exchange some nice words. I'd be willing to bring some of my World famous bacon-wrapped stuffed jalapeños and a main dish, maybe some seafood. Someone could bring lemonade, someone else potato salad. You would be surprised at how neat these casual get-togethers can be. The thing about Aguirre - there is a correct way to persuade the public, and then there is Aquirre. You can be 100% correct and manage to tick off an entire city, and that is Aguirre. I have always been surprised that a public figure could be so insulting. If that guy had a fraction of an ounce of charisma and could somehow keep from practically calling the citizens of San Diego idiots, I can't imagine the amount of good he might have done in the course of his career serving the city. If you want to make a difference, you have to offer the people you want to help the opportunity to do it of their own accord. It isn't always about being right, but more often about showing people how they can make the right decisions. I know that mine is not a popular point of view in this thread, but I can't help but to bring it up. Of course the politicians have been a bunch of corrupt liars! But man, don't scold us as though we can't see the obvious, just hand us torches and tell us where the bastards ran off to, we're capable.— July 27, 2010 2:01 p.m.
The Basketball Diaries
I think the film could've been done better, perhaps less dreamy and more cerebral. As usual, the problem with the film-from-the-book recipe is in trying to capture the author's brilliance and stupidity simultaneously, and unfortunately this one missed the mark enough to be noticeable to those of us who were familiar with Carroll previously. It would be interesting to read the perspective of someone who hadn't read the book, Carroll's poetry or musical stylings, and so on. I thought the casting was great, and the acting was good enough, but that the better and more compelling story was lost somewhere behind weirdly contrived direction, especially in the middle of the film. I still recommend this, flawed to whatever extent, because Carroll's story is worth the attempt to film it and therefore to watch the effort.— July 27, 2010 12:17 p.m.
