When I was in high school, in American literature, the techer assign the Grapes Of Wrath at one point and I politely told her that I had read it and requested an alternate. She gave me a copy of Of Mice And Men. Imagine a teenage boy trying to hide the tears in the classroom when George levels the gun at the back of Lennie's head.

Kerry Steigerwalt of Pacific Law Center says he was the “fall guy”
I'm not defending Steigerwalt, but consider the source of the link. This is the description of who they are: "The Injury Board is a growing community of attorneys, media professionals, safety industry experts, and local activists committed to making a difference by helping families stay safe and avoid injury, and helping those who are injured get the assistance they need to move on with their lives after an accident." Sounds like one bunch of slimeballs sliming another bunch of slimeballs.

Yes, nan, I certainly did enjoy the Raccoon one, I thought the author told the tale very well! The only experience I've ever had with raccoons was many years ago when I went fishing overnight at a lake up North. We caught four very nice catfish and we left them on the stringer in the lake for the night, we were looking forward to a nice catfish breakfast in the morning. We got up and hauled in the stringer, only to find that raccoons had gotten to the fish while we slept! Sneaky bastards ;)

Publishers can be worse, nan. When you submit something for publication, many will google the content to make sure you didn't publish it elsewhere. It cost me publication recently, because I blogged something here and had interest from somewhere else. I pulled it down from here, but in the meanwhile someone else had copied and pasted my piece into a forum. They didn't mean any harm by it, but the damage was done, the publisher was no longer interested. This is what happens.

Actually, this is a great example of the difference between ethics and civic duty I was talking about. Comment #22 was not a question of ethics, it was a question of attempting to discover that the poster had somehow done something unethical. Since I presume that comment #22 didn't take the necessary time to read the entire piece prior to sticking phrases into google, such a sense of civic duty was misplaced. It was pretty obvious to me that, in fact, the post entirely acknowledged the author of where much of the content came from. In that same way, MsGrants reaction to the dogs in the car appealed to her sense of civic duty. The ethics question is that of locking the dogs in the car in the first place. Others passing by apparently did not possess that sense of civic duty. I don't see this as unethical on their part, because that would presume that they saw nothing incorrect with locking dogs in a hot car. We don't know that this was the case. One's sense of civic duty can certainly be formed by their ethics, but not necessarily. MsGrant's obviously was. But I think it's important to keep both actions separate, ethically speaking.

MsGrant, I think that is entirely true and a solid argument in favor of legalization of all drugs. I think this is what makes drug use such a great topic for ethics debate. It takes "law" out of the equation. In other words, when calling the ethics of Barry Bonds into question, I don't think it's the legality that matters, especially since MLB didn't have any rules against it at the time, but rather, the inclination as you point out. If it was ethical for Bonds to use steroids, then it would bring into question why he would lie about it. That is a great example of the self-realization I was referring to.

Yes, nan, I certainly did enjoy the Raccoon one, I thought the author told the tale very well! The only experience I've ever had with raccoons was many years ago when I went fishing overnight at a lake up North. We caught four very nice catfish and we left them on the stringer in the lake for the night, we were looking forward to a nice catfish breakfast in the morning. We got up and hauled in the stringer, only to find that raccoons had gotten to the fish while we slept! Sneaky bastards ;)— August 3, 2010 9:50 p.m.

Publishers can be worse, nan. When you submit something for publication, many will google the content to make sure you didn't publish it elsewhere. It cost me publication recently, because I blogged something here and had interest from somewhere else. I pulled it down from here, but in the meanwhile someone else had copied and pasted my piece into a forum. They didn't mean any harm by it, but the damage was done, the publisher was no longer interested. This is what happens.— August 3, 2010 8:30 p.m.

Actually, this is a great example of the difference between ethics and civic duty I was talking about. Comment #22 was not a question of ethics, it was a question of attempting to discover that the poster had somehow done something unethical. Since I presume that comment #22 didn't take the necessary time to read the entire piece prior to sticking phrases into google, such a sense of civic duty was misplaced. It was pretty obvious to me that, in fact, the post entirely acknowledged the author of where much of the content came from. In that same way, MsGrants reaction to the dogs in the car appealed to her sense of civic duty. The ethics question is that of locking the dogs in the car in the first place. Others passing by apparently did not possess that sense of civic duty. I don't see this as unethical on their part, because that would presume that they saw nothing incorrect with locking dogs in a hot car. We don't know that this was the case. One's sense of civic duty can certainly be formed by their ethics, but not necessarily. MsGrant's obviously was. But I think it's important to keep both actions separate, ethically speaking.— August 3, 2010 8:10 p.m.

MsGrant, I think that is entirely true and a solid argument in favor of legalization of all drugs. I think this is what makes drug use such a great topic for ethics debate. It takes "law" out of the equation. In other words, when calling the ethics of Barry Bonds into question, I don't think it's the legality that matters, especially since MLB didn't have any rules against it at the time, but rather, the inclination as you point out. If it was ethical for Bonds to use steroids, then it would bring into question why he would lie about it. That is a great example of the self-realization I was referring to.— August 3, 2010 7:44 p.m.
