Is San Diego Wise to Save Water?
Agree about the profit, Founder. By the way, here in Mexico, we don't drink tap water at all, nor cook with it. Big trucks roam neighborhoods selling drinking/cooking water in the old glass 5 gallon bottles (or else there are stores where you can fill bottles). Each bottle costs less that $ 1.50 each. We run through about 3 of those bottles in about 1 1/2 weeks.

$1.00 buys 213.71 gallons of water It's amazing that I never thought of it that way before. We just pay our waterbill without giving the value much thought; although we are pretty careful with our water here, we never really put any sort of a value on it like that. Of course, in Mexico it's liters, but still, same principle.

What Does Ethics Mean?/edited again 8/7/2010
Founder, the issue is threefold: 1. Most of the community blogs are about community. However, some of the blogs will often offer entries that deviate, it's difficult to expect someone to write only on the exact precise premise of something happening in their community. That would be handcuffing anyone who wishes to contribute to the Reader. "Sense of community" doesn't always have to be about community, neighbors often talk about, say, the oil spill, national politics, and so on. In this case, Nan wanted to talk about ethics. 2. All blogs are personal blogs, unless they are written with some distinct topic in mind like, say, politics or cooking. And even then, the blogs are almost always personal opinion. Staff blogs, for example, usually stay on the topic that the Reader columnist specializes in, but they almost always contain purely op-ed. 3. Some people sign up for the online Reader and leave only negative comments. They try and hold a blogger responsible as though the blogger is a paid journalist. All they want to do is to argue, as though there is some hole in their lives that can't otherwise be repaired. These same people, when not adequately argued with, then accuse the blogger and commenters of a range of horrible things like being too friendly and nice and supportive of others. Most of the people who have the guts to blog here don't do it for the negativity. They just want to be a part of the Reader community. The good local stories are generally in the "stringers" stories. While technically, such stories are supposed to be journalistic, they sort of meet that status halfway. Many stringer stories are written in 1st person narrative. Their "prize" is posted, all stringer stories that are published are paid. I'm not certain if the Reader has that in mind, but empirically, that's the way they seem to have structured it.

Agree about the profit, Founder. By the way, here in Mexico, we don't drink tap water at all, nor cook with it. Big trucks roam neighborhoods selling drinking/cooking water in the old glass 5 gallon bottles (or else there are stores where you can fill bottles). Each bottle costs less that $ 1.50 each. We run through about 3 of those bottles in about 1 1/2 weeks.— August 4, 2010 11:28 a.m.

$1.00 buys 213.71 gallons of water It's amazing that I never thought of it that way before. We just pay our waterbill without giving the value much thought; although we are pretty careful with our water here, we never really put any sort of a value on it like that. What Does Ethics Mean?/edited again 8/7/2010
Founder, the issue is threefold: 1. Most of the community blogs are about community. However, some of the blogs will often offer entries that deviate, it's difficult to expect someone to write only on the exact precise premise of something happening in their community. That would be handcuffing anyone who wishes to contribute to the Reader. "Sense of community" doesn't always have to be about community, neighbors often talk about, say, the oil spill, national politics, and so on. In this case, Nan wanted to talk about ethics. 2. All blogs are personal blogs, unless they are written with some distinct topic in mind like, say, politics or cooking. And even then, the blogs are almost always personal opinion. Staff blogs, for example, usually stay on the topic that the Reader columnist specializes in, but they almost always contain purely op-ed. 3. Some people sign up for the online Reader and leave only negative comments. They try and hold a blogger responsible as though the blogger is a paid journalist. All they want to do is to argue, as though there is some hole in their lives that can't otherwise be repaired. These same people, when not adequately argued with, then accuse the blogger and commenters of a range of horrible things like being too friendly and nice and supportive of others. Most of the people who have the guts to blog here don't do it for the negativity. They just want to be a part of the Reader community. The good local stories are generally in the "stringers" stories. While technically, such stories are supposed to be journalistic, they sort of meet that status halfway. Many stringer stories are written in 1st person narrative. Their "prize" is posted, all stringer stories that are published are paid. I'm not certain if the Reader has that in mind, but empirically, that's the way they seem to have structured it.— August 4, 2010 9:27 a.m.
