Asians Go Mexican
More drugs are seized in attempts to cross the border at Tecate than the border at Tijuana. There are much less local, State, and Federal police in Tecate, and the cartels who move drugs through Baja prefer small, quiet towns where they have more control over the authorities. Of course, none of this has anything to do with safety of tourists, but Americans refuse to believe this anyway. Most Americans believe that they are targets. Tecate is no more safe than is Tijuana, but people will believe what they wish, so perhaps they should all go to Tecate. It is probably more important for tourists to FEEL safe rather than to BE safe.

On the Benefits of Recreational Summertime Walking through Death Valley
Mindy, were I gay, I would hope that my point of view wouldn't be any different. After all, we're simply talking about sexual preference here. And, I should've spelled that "you're" on both occasions (I pay so little attention in the comments section, it makes me ashamed!). Anyway, my point is that it wouldn't be any more fair for homosexuals to hate on heterosexuals that are against gay marriage than it would be for heterosexuals to hate homosexuals for wishing to marry. From outside of the box, I witnessed both. It was horribly enlightening. I'd rather that both sides just be honest with no repercussions. I think that's the first step toward a true understanding about what both sides feel. And with that, perhaps, just the part about understanding would be okay.

On the Benefits of Recreational Summertime Walking through Death Valley
I don't know what a "natural marriage" is. I've read a few pounds worth of Holy Bibles in various modes of translations, and for the life of me, I can't recall a mention of Adam and Eve ever getting hitched. Heck, even Abraham married his own sister, nothing natural about that unless you live in some obscure part of Kentucky. As for myself, I'm hopelessly heterosexual; I would try really hard to be gay but I'm afraid it would be a dead end, I was simply born this way. Sorry. But, I have no issue with gay marriage. I also see have no issue with those who oppose it, hey, you have to be true to what you feel. I like the blog entry a lot, doesn't much matter how I feel about a couple of homosexuals that might want to tie the knot. I think that the world needs to chill when it comes to reacting to opinions about gay marriage. If you're for it, great, and if your against it, great. But the overreaction does more damage than does the opinion.

Powis Castle
We're not talking about two different things. The Delaware incident is the last recorded. In the late '90's, there were several incidents of it. Before that, you have to go back to the fifties. In modern times (post 1960), it is generally thought that the grooms were paid off to look the other way while it happened, but there are (unconfirmed) stories of trainers doing it to their own horses in the 1950's and accepting bribes from competitors. Hopefully, we never hear of it again.

I'll find out what happened to Tuscan Evening within a few days, I keep a pretty good eye on the industry in spite of not being involved in the game these days. It does sound consistent with equine heart failure. We'll likely know by mid-week. Sponging, thankfully, was short-lived in recent times. I know that some bastards used to do it in the old days, and that it began to occur recently in small pockets of thoroughbred horse racing, but believe me, if trainers are caught doing it, that's the end of their career. The really stupid thing is that it doesn't make the horse any better. Some trainers have been idiots over the years, they're the types that have given the sport a bad name.

Asians Go Mexican
The tours are invented for tourists. For those who simply enter, exploring Tijuana has its rewards. There is a little French pastry and coffee place that tourists only discover accidentally. The vast majority of the bars are crap, but there are several upscale places. I am delighted when tourists ignore them. The best, most authentic place to eat breakfast in Tijuana costs less than three dollars (except don't order the bacon, it's always under-cooked). Again, I have never seen a tourist there. Yet, the place is right in the middle of everything. The Asian tourists (and there are still plenty of Asian tourists here), tend to stick to the boulevard. To be Japanese/Mexican must be amazing, Tina. Really, the cultural differences must present a unique set of obstacles to rationalize. Perhaps I'm wrong about that, maybe it's easy since I'm neither Mexican nor Japanese, but there certainly are vast differences in the customs of the two cultures!

I Like Words
Nan, I agree with the fan-base, you are the freshest breath of air. The idea of a particular section, onsite, devoted to poetry, would bring a ton of hits to the Reader website, I hope that the powers that be are reading this. Give a person a poem to read and they're happy. Give a poet an opportunity to participate, and you will be surprised at how many show up. I know a lot of poets that do not get the outlet they deserve.

Russian boars let loose on Capitan Grande Indian Reservation
Well, Visduh, ya gotta kill something or you're not gonna eat! I'm not much on hunting, although my father used to when I was young. I love venison to this day. And I can't see a problem with hunting what you're going to consume. Some people don't dig it, and that's understandable, but it isn't the Reader's fault that some people hunt. Funny story about Tijuana, one morning I went downtown and noticed a new taco stand, Tacos Venados. I went about my business and then came back to that taco stand, "venado" is "deer". I asked for a venison taco and he looked at me like I was nuts, and then he laughed, "No, that's just the name of the taco stand." I was highly disappointed. I like to fish. The meat tastes great and what's not edible makes for great fertilizer.

Powis Castle
Thank you, Bohemianopus! Very kind of you. The Reader actually already has a column about Tijuana; it's not regular in the sense that there's something there every week, but comes sporadically (perhaps the column was planned as a monthly) from the keyboards of native Tijuanense bloggers (headed by my longtime pal Julio Martinez, currently living in Sweeden). The neat thing about their stories is that they were either written in Spanish and transated into English, or that even if they were written in English it is easy to see in the structure of the stories that Spanish is likely their first tongue, and that gives the stories a very unique feel.

It is probably more important for tourists to FEEL safe rather than to BE safe.— August 10, 2010 4:05 p.m.
And with that, perhaps, just the part about understanding would be okay.— August 10, 2010 2:06 a.m.

But the overreaction does more damage than does the opinion.— August 10, 2010 12:36 a.m.

Hopefully, we never hear of it again.— August 10, 2010 12:03 a.m.

Some trainers have been idiots over the years, they're the types that have given the sport a bad name.— August 9, 2010 8:35 p.m.

Perhaps I'm wrong about that, maybe it's easy since I'm neither Mexican nor Japanese, but there certainly are vast differences in the customs of the two cultures!— August 9, 2010 7:19 p.m.

I know a lot of poets that do not get the outlet they deserve.— August 9, 2010 7 p.m.
The meat tastes great and what's not edible makes for great fertilizer.— August 9, 2010 5:54 p.m.

The neat thing about their stories is that they were either written in Spanish and transated into English, or that even if they were written in English it is easy to see in the structure of the stories that Spanish is likely their first tongue, and that gives the stories a very unique feel. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/yonder/— August 9, 2010 1:17 p.m.
