"Perhaps we should start charging teachers for being "truant" with their class's success on standardized testing and then also charge them for their own retraining held on Saturdays (without them being reimbursed for any of their time)..." This is a healthy direction. Unfortunately, the State of California doles out money according to attendance, not performance. Thus, the questionable behavior of the school. Unfortunately, the activist Smith attacks the problem from the entirely incorrect angle.

U-T Was "a Bit Fat," but Low-Priced, Says Gores
@ #8, #14: Well, in an odd yet fascinating turn of events, it looks like I'm going to get to examine the current state of San Diego education for one school year. My youngest apparently will complete her senior year of high school over there. My guess is that her mathematics, chemistry, physics and other sciences are probably beyond the average over there, her English (though perfectly spoken) might be a tad below (English spelling is insane compared to Spanish), and her only lessons in American civics and history have come from yours truly. The latter could present a potential problem ;)

"If the student has three or more "truancies" they are placed on the Loss of Privilege list and banned from attending school dances, graduation ceremonies, and supporting their school's sports teams. The only way for a student to get lopped off this list is by attending Saturday school." = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Actually, then, according to 48264.5 of the Education Code, the above punishment for "truancy" or perhaps even "lateness" does not violate the E.C. Students may certainly not attend Saturdays under such circumstances and live with whatever "Loss Of Priveledge" means. I'm not saying that Lincoln High School Administrators aren't being comeplete jerks, but I'm also not saying that Sally Smith isn't being an idiot either. If Smith wants the California State Constitution changed in order to reflect the ultra-liberal 1984 interpretation of the California State Constitution Section IX, then it must be done by a vote of the people. The ACLU, regardless of the intent, cannot win this. Within the E.C., schools have the authority to do this sort of thing. If the parents of the students are ticked off, then perhaps the best and most powerful thing they can do (aside from ignoring Sally Smith) is to yank their children from the High School. By hitting the school in the pocketbook (they don't get paid if your kid isn't in school), then the school will have no choice but to acquiesce to the wishes of the parents.

U-T Was "a Bit Fat," but Low-Priced, Says Gores
Visduh, it isn't really the cancellation of busses that bothers me, it's the poor spending of school funding and the stupid and hasty decisions that are sometimes made. In Mexico, there have never been school busses, and everything here works wonderfully well without them. When my kids were young, I worked and the wife stayed home and wolked the kids to school, and in odd moments when she worked and I was temporarily unemployed, I took the kids to school. When they got older, we gave them bus or taxi money. No complaints. But it has been historically different in the U.S. For high school students, the lack of bussing is completely understandable in my opinion, but Poway was going to rake all bussing off of the table, even for elementary schools. You know, that's a very rural area, some of it, I can't imagine a seven-year old walking five miles to school. People in the U.S. simply pay too many taxes without much accountability to where that money goes. I don't blame the Poway School District so much as I wonder about Pulte touting that district as any more attractive than anywhere else.

@ #2: Pulte advertises in the U-T. The questions seem pre-planned, and the answers are canned corn. For example, the remark about the Poway School District being desireable? Only today was the district "pleased to announce" that they wouldn't be cancelling school bus service after all, as they had stated earlier that all bus services would no longer be available. I wouldn't desire to enroll my child in a school district like that. 131 units doesn't seem like much, but when there have been so many foreclosures in the last couple of years, it seems unlikely that "new" is going to sell any more than "used" and "cheaper".

I Like Words
Joe, I'm going to presume that the cactus is nopales. Generally, they are diced up and cooked with meat and liquified tomatoes, spiced any number of ways. I've seen it offered that way in a taco at the Tacos Varios carts. Nopales is used in that dish and other dishes mostly at home, not so much in a taco but as a main dish. I don't much care for them.

Asians Go Mexican
"...but I tend to frequent the busy street taco stands..." Some of the best food in Tijuana is the street food. Certainly, it's dangerous what with having to dodge all of the bullets and narrowly escape kidnapping attempts and so on, but it's definitely worth the trouble.

"Perhaps we should start charging teachers for being "truant" with their class's success on standardized testing and then also charge them for their own retraining held on Saturdays (without them being reimbursed for any of their time)..." This is a healthy direction. Unfortunately, the State of California doles out money according to attendance, not performance. Thus, the questionable behavior of the school. Unfortunately, the activist Smith attacks the problem from the entirely incorrect angle.— August 12, 2010 4:03 p.m.

@ #8, #14: Well, in an odd yet fascinating turn of events, it looks like I'm going to get to examine the current state of San Diego education for one school year. My youngest apparently will complete her senior year of high school over there. My guess is that her mathematics, chemistry, physics and other sciences are probably beyond the average over there, her English (though perfectly spoken) might be a tad below (English spelling is insane compared to Spanish), and her only lessons in American civics and history have come from yours truly. The latter could present a potential problem ;)— August 12, 2010 1:48 p.m.

"If the student has three or more "truancies" they are placed on the Loss of Privilege list and banned from attending school dances, graduation ceremonies, and supporting their school's sports teams. The only way for a student to get lopped off this list is by attending Saturday school." = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Actually, then, according to 48264.5 of the Education Code, the above punishment for "truancy" or perhaps even "lateness" does not violate the E.C. Students may certainly not attend Saturdays under such circumstances and live with whatever "Loss Of Priveledge" means. I'm not saying that Lincoln High School Administrators aren't being comeplete jerks, but I'm also not saying that Sally Smith isn't being an idiot either. If Smith wants the California State Constitution changed in order to reflect the ultra-liberal 1984 interpretation of the California State Constitution Section IX, then it must be done by a vote of the people. The ACLU, regardless of the intent, cannot win this. Within the E.C., schools have the authority to do this sort of thing. If the parents of the students are ticked off, then perhaps the best and most powerful thing they can do (aside from ignoring Sally Smith) is to yank their children from the High School. By hitting the school in the pocketbook (they don't get paid if your kid isn't in school), then the school will have no choice but to acquiesce to the wishes of the parents.— August 11, 2010 9:49 p.m.

Visduh, it isn't really the cancellation of busses that bothers me, it's the poor spending of school funding and the stupid and hasty decisions that are sometimes made. In Mexico, there have never been school busses, and everything here works wonderfully well without them. When my kids were young, I worked and the wife stayed home and wolked the kids to school, and in odd moments when she worked and I was temporarily unemployed, I took the kids to school. When they got older, we gave them bus or taxi money. No complaints. But it has been historically different in the U.S. For high school students, the lack of bussing is completely understandable in my opinion, but Poway was going to rake all bussing off of the table, even for elementary schools. You know, that's a very rural area, some of it, I can't imagine a seven-year old walking five miles to school. People in the U.S. simply pay too many taxes without much accountability to where that money goes. I don't blame the Poway School District so much as I wonder about Pulte touting that district as any more attractive than anywhere else.— August 11, 2010 8:09 p.m.

@ #2: Pulte advertises in the U-T. The questions seem pre-planned, and the answers are canned corn. For example, the remark about the Poway School District being desireable? Only today was the district "pleased to announce" that they wouldn't be cancelling school bus service after all, as they had stated earlier that all bus services would no longer be available. I wouldn't desire to enroll my child in a school district like that. 131 units doesn't seem like much, but when there have been so many foreclosures in the last couple of years, it seems unlikely that "new" is going to sell any more than "used" and "cheaper".— August 11, 2010 6:52 p.m.
I Like Words
Joe, I'm going to presume that the cactus is nopales. Generally, they are diced up and cooked with meat and liquified tomatoes, spiced any number of ways. I've seen it offered that way in a taco at the Tacos Varios carts. Nopales is used in that dish and other dishes mostly at home, not so much in a taco but as a main dish. Asians Go Mexican
"...but I tend to frequent the busy street taco stands..." Some of the best food in Tijuana is the street food. Certainly, it's dangerous what with having to dodge all of the bullets and narrowly escape kidnapping attempts and so on, but it's definitely worth the trouble.— August 11, 2010 4:10 a.m.

Can't speak for MsGrant, Skip, but after I cook dinner I generally come back into my office and sit back into my chair, check my email, and then poke around on a number of my favorite sites, this being one.
