You Want A Slotted Head Or A Phillips With That?
What a mess. Typical bureaucracy, left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. Hope you get it straightened away in good order, Robbie.

Irate Judge Now Feels Lerach's Sentence Was Too Lenient
@ #69: I was mad at him for not recognizing Davey Lopes and Rickey Henderson. The latter is in the Hall of Fame now. I always wanted my brother to share my love for baseball, I reckon it never took. But to this day, he does brag to his pals about that meeting with Autry and then Jackson, so all is not lost.

Permit an insolvent city to subsidize a Charger stadium?
@ #86 & 87: All good points. However, write a eulogy in honor of a fallen friend for his family in San Diego to read, then let a commentor with an obvious personal axe to grind against the person who posts that eulogy enter a comment of disrespect, and with no way to remove the comment before his father reads the post and the comments... That happened in my case. Here's another thought: I can't share this website - at least, the fact that I enjoy contributing to it - with my own parents. Why? Personal attacks. Apparently, they are permitted so long as they don't violate the TOS (I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around the ever-changing TOS in here). So, consider this irony: Your 1st Amendment here now limits my audience. If I'm writing a story (published, not a blog), then that's the price you pay. I'm not so sure that should be the case if someone writes and expects nothing in return.

"...or how about blocking comments from certain posters? Or have comments only if you want them?" The blocking of comments from certain posters could only be done through the servers, and I'm guessing that the Reader doesn't want to screw with that. Blocking comments (all) or even deleting comments (they wouldn't actually be deleted, but would rather be invisible to the public) could actually be accomplished without taxing the servers (guessing that's why the option doesn't already exist). But that's up to them, I'm simply planting a seed here ;)

Irate Judge Now Feels Lerach's Sentence Was Too Lenient
Oddly enough, Crys, this was shortly before their fallout. The Big-A. I had tickets, really good ones. I took my little brother, and Jackson was on that Angels team at the time. They played the A's. It was unusually crowded, a Friday or Saturday night as I recall. The Angels weren't in contention, as usual. But we were there, and there was traffic after the game and I had tickets to attend the Extra-Innings Club or whatever it was called back then. I was 21, my brother wasn't, and that was obvious, so I drank a beer up there and he sipped a coke, we waited for the parking lot to clear. I thought nothing of it. In walked Davey Lopes and Ricky (both of the A's back then), and they took a seat and I pointed them out to my little bro who wasn't impressed (the bastard!). We stood in front of the crowded bar watching the Dodger game on television, as I was a total Dodger fan then. After about 15 minutes, some old guy with a satchel walked in, and he engaged me. "Who's winning?" "Cubs, but the Dodgers will catch 'em, they have a great team this year," I said. Meanwhile, my little brother kept trying to get my attention. I ignored him. I got into a pretty good argument with that old man, who just laughed at my Dodger fandom and finally left to do other things. Then my brother finally broke through. "Do you realize who that was?" No, I didn't. My brother, who knew everything about television and probably still does, informed me that I'd just argued with Gene. I didn't believe my brother up until about a minute later, we were politely asked to leave the place. My brother was right. That guy was Gene Autry (and Autry was completely classy throughout the entire argument, I think I simply amused him). Go figure. And so, as luck would have it, I met Reggie Jackson in the parking lot as I walked back to my car. That meeting was eventful, but not quite publishable ;) Yes, Jackson is an ass. I love me some Major League Baseball :)

Irate Judge Now Feels Lerach's Sentence Was Too Lenient
SP: Winfield was a stud, a very gifted athlete, as was Tony. Crys: I have a Reggie Jackson story that completely supports yours! I'll write that sometime, if I haven't already. Gene Autry co-stars. It was a memorable evening ;)

Irate Judge Now Feels Lerach's Sentence Was Too Lenient
Ah, yes I remember! Good to see you again, my friend. Regarding Winfield, yes, there was that mess with George, and although he claims to have forgiven him, you know, that was pretty harsh on Steinbrenner's part. I can't imagine being stalked like that. But, also, the Padres ensured that Winfield got a wonderful job in exchange for his enshrinement wearing the yellow and brown. And I don't mean that negatively, I've met Mr. Winfield, the nicest man you'll ever come in contact with, and the Padres and Dave go very well together. I think that worked out for the best for everyone involved.

Tip of the cap, crystalcove, not many in this site would've known that. Impressive.

Permit an insolvent city to subsidize a Charger stadium?
"I would suggest to the Reader powers-that-be that they get rid of the comments under the blogs, except for the professionals." This is interesting, I've though about it quite a bit. First, some people have a problem dividing actual stories from blog entries (I've read comments in stories that refered to the stories as "blogs", for example). Stories are stories and blog entries are blog entries. I think that anyone should be able to comment to their heart's content on stories, and that the authors should be encouraged to comment back, but shouldn't take the criticism personally. If you get paid to write, then your audience gets to take a hatchet to your stuff, that's just how it goes. With blogs, it's different. These are just people, some are good writers, some are simply people with an opinion. But I'm not in favor of knocking out the comments there, either, because a lot of those comments are positive and helpful. It would be nice, however, if at some point the Reader considered allowing the author of the blogs to delete the crap comments. The negative: It might invite a lot of monkey-business by people who are simply here for a cheap thrill. The positive, is that the Admin will do less policing in the long run, and the blogger has the opportunity to weed out comments that are obviously meant to be hurtful or possess verbage meant to be personal in nature in a negative manner.

You Want A Slotted Head Or A Phillips With That?
What a mess. Typical bureaucracy, left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. Hope you get it straightened away in good order, Robbie.— August 16, 2010 9:20 a.m.
But to this day, he does brag to his pals about that meeting with Autry and then Jackson, so all is not lost.— August 16, 2010 8:33 a.m.
I'm not so sure that should be the case if someone writes and expects nothing in return.— August 16, 2010 8:17 a.m.

But that's up to them, I'm simply planting a seed here ;)— August 16, 2010 1:55 a.m.
I love me some Major League Baseball :)— August 16, 2010 1:33 a.m.

SP: Winfield was a stud, a very gifted athlete, as was Tony. Crys: I have a Reggie Jackson story that completely supports yours! I'll write that sometime, if I haven't already. Gene Autry co-stars. It was a memorable evening ;)— August 15, 2010 11:49 p.m.

I think that worked out for the best for everyone involved.— August 15, 2010 11:01 p.m.

The positive, is that the Admin will do less policing in the long run, and the blogger has the opportunity to weed out comments that are obviously meant to be hurtful or possess verbage meant to be personal in nature in a negative manner.— August 15, 2010 10:21 p.m.
