County Unemployment Rate Jumps to 10.8%
Hey look guys, I'd love to slather mayo on a couple of slices of bread and add some thinly sliced tomatoes with salt and pepper and so on, but let's be honest here, the U-T is now a piece of crap. I have to give y'all a true opinion, I wouldn't feel right about commenting here if I didn't. I can only promise one thing here: I will never lie. I might not comment if I don't have a basis for input, but if I've tried the product I'll give you an honest revue.

"The banks used the money they borrowed from the taxpayer to either buy stocks directly for their own account, or to loan money to hedge funds to buy stocks on margin." Sadly, this is true, and small businesses that could use lines of credit are denied.

No one with an ounce of sense will take the U-T seriously under this new regime. I bought my first hardcopy the other day during a trip into the U.S., and it's horrible. I didn't think it could get worse than it was, but it has. The journalism is pathetic, and the "new format" looks like some knock-off made for children. Any decent writer still working there must have their feelers out for a new job, I wouldn't want to be associated with what that newspaper has become. It's a joke, plain and simple, a big giant joke.

I'm Not "420 Friendly," But "420 Allergic!"
Look, Greg, I'm for the legalization of pretty much everything, but you brought up the argument about prohibition. Then you brought up an argument about gun control (apparently you are in favor of it). Criminals ran booze when it was illegal. Great point. And now, Mexicans die because Americans won't legalize drugs, good point. Now, let's carry that through to your argument about gun control. Do you really think that a convicted felon isn't going to be able to purchase an AK-47? I don't think that you can pick and choose what you decide shouldn't be legal on the basis that some things are more dangerous than others. I think it's great that you have an opinion on this, just as I admire Robbie for his (I don't agree with it, but I think he presented his opinion very well). But, you know, it's up for discussion, and I'm compelled to point out what I see as sort of duplicit concerning your first comment. And freedom and liberty are the core of the argument concerning legalization of practically everything; I'm not introducing it as a new idea in this, simply pointing out that it's the main concern here.

"Your comparison and assertion have no context to my reply to Mr. Johnston's essay." Couldn't care less about Mr. Johnston. You said, "Add to that the idiotically lax gun laws in states such as AZ and TX..." The 2nd Amendment says nothing about control. Your comments concerning legalization of weed, then, would pretend to allow the government to decide who would be able to smoke it (or bake it into confectionary pastries or whatever). Regarding your broad assumption concerning what the 2nd Amendment REALLY means (because, after all, the founding fathers had absolutely no clue about the future, as if that actually matters), I am forced to reach to conclusion that you really have no clue as to WHY the 2nd Amendment exists. It exists to protect the citizens against the possible tyranny of its own government. If the government gets to use cannons, then so do the citizens. Texans are one hell of a lot smarter than you give them credit for; as much as I otherwise dislike that State, I admire their gun laws. The government should have no more control over weed than it should have over gun ownership, and it should have no authority to control either.

Gay Paper Suspended, but Sends Money for Back Taxes
"It did no good to remove them from the blog." I don't know Burwell. I think that the Reader simply doesn't want identities made public. They can only be accountable for so much. So long as due dillegence is done, you know. Trying to control internet content is akin to what Bukowski said about politics, and I can't repeat that here, but it had something to do with a cat and I'll let you look that up on your own ;)

What's the Meaning of Life?
"What's the meaning of life?" Death. And in between life and death, according to Vonnegut, we are simply supposed to fart around. And hopefully, a lot of good stuff happens to balance out the bad stuff that happens. And I'm not being intentionally nihilistic here, simply pointing out the obvious, that the inevitable result of any event is the true meaning of the event. What this likely points to, is that far too many people fear the meaning of life and probably don't do enough farting around.

Hey look guys, I'd love to slather mayo on a couple of slices of bread and add some thinly sliced tomatoes with salt and pepper and so on, but let's be honest here, the U-T is now a piece of crap. I have to give y'all a true opinion, I wouldn't feel right about commenting here if I didn't. I can only promise one thing here: I will never lie. No one with an ounce of sense will take the U-T seriously under this new regime. I bought my first hardcopy the other day during a trip into the U.S., and it's horrible. I didn't think it could get worse than it was, but it has. The journalism is pathetic, and the "new format" looks like some knock-off made for children. Any decent writer still working there must have their feelers out for a new job, I wouldn't want to be associated with what that newspaper has become. Look, Greg, I'm for the legalization of pretty much everything, but you brought up the argument about prohibition. Then you brought up an argument about gun control (apparently you are in favor of it). Criminals ran booze when it was illegal. Great point. And now, Mexicans die because Americans won't legalize drugs, good point. Now, let's carry that through to your argument about gun control. Do you really think that a convicted felon isn't going to be able to purchase an AK-47? I don't think that you can pick and choose what you decide shouldn't be legal on the basis that some things are more dangerous than others. I think it's great that you have an opinion on this, just as I admire Robbie for his (I don't agree with it, but I think he presented his opinion very well). But, you know, it's up for discussion, and I'm compelled to point out what I see as sort of duplicit concerning your first comment. And freedom and liberty are the core of the argument concerning legalization of practically everything; I'm not introducing it as a new idea in this, simply pointing out that it's the main concern here.— August 21, 2010 5:46 p.m.

"Your comparison and assertion have no context to my reply to Mr. Johnston's essay." Couldn't care less about Mr. Johnston. You said, "Add to that the idiotically lax gun laws in states such as AZ and TX..." The 2nd Amendment says nothing about control. Your comments concerning legalization of weed, then, would pretend to allow the government to decide who would be able to smoke it (or bake it into confectionary pastries or whatever). Regarding your broad assumption concerning what the 2nd Amendment REALLY means (because, after all, the founding fathers had absolutely no clue about the future, as if that actually matters), I am forced to reach to conclusion that you really have no clue as to WHY the 2nd Amendment exists. It exists to protect the citizens against the possible tyranny of its own government. If the government gets to use cannons, then so do the citizens. Texans are one hell of a lot smarter than you give them credit for; as much as I otherwise dislike that State, I admire their gun laws. The government should have no more control over weed than it should have over gun ownership, and it should have no authority to control either.— August 21, 2010 4:43 p.m.

So long as due dillegence is done, you know. What's the Meaning of Life?
"What's the meaning of life?" Death. And in between life and death, according to Vonnegut, we are simply supposed to fart around. And hopefully, a lot of good stuff happens to balance out the bad stuff that happens. And I'm not being intentionally nihilistic here, simply pointing out the obvious, that the inevitable result of any event is the true meaning of the event.
