"Back in 1972, the GOP planned to hold the Republican National Convention here. It would be a triumphant coronation in Nixon's "Lucky City" for the man who'd go on to wallop his opponent in the November election.
Then a scandal erupted over a convention-related bribe, and San Diego's dream of Republican glory vanished. But soon, the city's young mayor, Pete Wilson, created the new "Finest City" slogan to boost the city's sagging spirits. The scandal itself was quickly forgotten as Watergate and a presidential resignation captured the public's attention.
A new book puts the bribery scandal into perspective, revealing its crucial role in the downfall of a president." — February 24, 2013 6:41 p.m.
Bad service in San Diego
Fascinating. * The well-heeled Carl DeMaio was an "underdog"? That's, um, rich. * VOSD is "struggling"? Check its tax forms for 2012 vs. 2011. * Want to know who's really struggling? Your dear beloved, the San Diego Reader. Its circulation keeps tanking. From 152,524 in 2011 (down from 2010) to 126,273 in Dec. 2012. Bad service in San Diego
I'll suggest you all follow the advice that football player John Riggins (and this is true) gave to Sandra Day O'Connor, the former Supreme Court justice, at a banquet: "Come on, Sandy baby, loosen up. You're too tight.”— June 17, 2013 6:28 p.m.
Koch-tied non-profit teams with Manchester's U-T San Diego
So what about the big-money publisher of the Reader, who has a conservative political agenda and has pushed it through the pages of his newspaper? Also: "Liberal" Irwin Jacobs endorsed very-non-liberal Carl DeMaio for mayor. Calling him a pure "liberal" is pure BS. (disclosure: I'm a freelance contributor to VOSD)— June 3, 2013 11:03 p.m.
David Copley's downtown condo sold for $3.4 million
Jeez, people are mighty judgmental about Copley. He gave away a tremendous amount of money and kept the U-T afloat without layoffs longer than just about any other major publisher. People who knew him say he was a kind and generous but shy man. Fate gave him some advantages (wealth) but major challenges (a difficult family, his sexual orientation). In death, as in life, the man deserves a break from maniacal over-judgment, especially from those who aren't exactly selfless monks themselves.— June 3, 2013 9:51 p.m.

"Mayor Mo" stole $2 million from late husband's foundation
Where have these "many" reporters indicated that they knew about her gambling? And if she gambled a lot after she was mayor (or even while she was mayor), why would that be a news story?— February 18, 2013 8:29 p.m.
Ex-Sanders aide gets $6,000 a month for Balboa Park centennial role
The cat, as is his wont, urges silence on these matters. But he can't help but note that VOSD does list its donors here: http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/support_us/about_u…. Where, pray tell, is the Reader's list of its advertisers (by level of support) or its disclosure of its publisher's financial entanglements? I respectfully disagree. It's rarely appropriate to report a rumor. That's a basic rule of good journalism, and it's a wise one for a whole bunch of reasons.— February 17, 2013 7:20 p.m.
