Lobbyists use Twitter to rip Filner over downtown banquet speech
"All you Sanders sycophants in the so-called 'press'! Stop being snippy and please write about how Filner is wonderful. You jerks." -- Signed, anonymous commenters— February 8, 2013 9:01 a.m.
Lobbyists use Twitter to rip Filner over downtown banquet speech
The fact that the press (U-T, VOSD, CityBeat) spent a lot of time angrily fighting with the Sanders flaks, and often found them to be gigantic PITAs, doesn't fit your narrative so you ignore it. And the fact that VOSD, in particular, called Sanders out again and again on his misstatements and screwups (and again some more, since VOSD is nothing if not obsessive and incessant) : that doesn't fit your narrative so it's ignored too. And like I said: anonymous commenters on an online site trying to dismiss journalists as mere "bloggers" and denizens of a silly social-media world? That's rich. La Jolla-style rich. "San Diego 20" rich. Romney car-elevator rich. Irwin Jacobs rich! Richie Rich.— February 7, 2013 9:30 p.m.

Who could "Monaghan" be? Let's see... there's only one Filner apologist who's clever enough to come up with a term like "viscerati" and just adores Matt Potter. What's the name? Fizzle? Freeze? Fuzz? Something. It'll come to me.— February 7, 2013 5:31 p.m.

I do occasional reporting for VOSD and write most of the Morning Reports, but I generally don't cover issues like this. Not in my bailiwick. That's the job of the VOSD staff -- Scott, Liam, Lisa, for the most part.— February 7, 2013 4:24 p.m.

Filner met with business people and said something insulting -- the Reader doesn't know what -- and the business people were insulted. Meanwhile, the Reader tears the lid off the shocking news that business people have business interests. And a commenter notes that Twitter is insular. Excellent work, all. Carry on! -Randy— February 7, 2013 2:49 p.m.
New filing shows U-T's Manchester personally backed Carl DeMaio and GOP to tune of $283,900
Well lookie here. I googled "Pudgil Watch" myself and found this: "Longtime city hall watchers know that Pudgil and the mayor's office are often accused of being less than forthcoming when it comes to handling requests for public information regarding all city offices, whether from the media or local citizenry." Huh. Must have been some totally out of touch reporter/publication that wrote that! Let's see... who's this Matt Potter guy? Hmm. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/news-ticker…— February 1, 2013 12:53 a.m.

Um, what? "Deferential treatment" under Sanders? Bwa-ha-ha-ha! That's rich. I'd love to locate the alternate universe where you find this stuff. The Sanders flaks were quick to respond to reporters, and that was nice. But quick to respond doesn't necessarily translate into transparency, and it sure didn't under Sanders. Journalists from VOSD and CityBeat, which you mention specifically, got into endless battles with them over things like access to public records. You can look it up. (Google "Pudgil Watch.") The Sanders administration was hardly a golden era for journalists who wanted to do their jobs. Things are different now. Journalists (including me) just get ignored. By the way, it was fun reading about you on Twitter today. You're even driving one of the most progressive journalists in town around the bend.— February 1, 2013 12:50 a.m.
Who's Mr. Clean? Larry Remer? Voice of San Diego?
VOSD's new disclosure policy doesn't go far enough. But on the transparency front, Scott Lewis did mention Remer's tirade and linked to it in an email message to VOSD's members. He even said something nice about Don "Foofaraw" Bauder. (There's no accounting for taste.) It takes some cojones to not only tell readers that you've been criticized but also provide a link so they can read the slam for themselves. -Randy Dotinga (disclosure: I'm a freelance contributor to VOSD)— November 4, 2012 1:26 a.m.
Farewell to a legend: Gloria Penner
It was a shame that the Editor's Roundtable crew was so un-diverse for so long. I called KPBS out a few times in my North County Times radio column about this. But it did eventually embrace a wide variety of voices, including the editor of CityBeat. So a leftie alternative-press voice did get in there. As for the show never including a Reader voice: The Reader loves to antagonize lots of local media outlets, from the U-T to KPBS to VOSD. It's good, at least in theory, to have a news organization that's not polite. But you can't make bitter enemies in the media and then expect these same folks to invite you on their shows. It doesn't work that way. Instead of whining about who won't talk to it (like the city), the Reader should be proud that it's pissed people off.— October 7, 2012 9:21 p.m.
