My tattoo is a customized version of the Ancient Egyptian symbol Eye of Ra. It is an ode to my grandfather, a photographer born in 1939. The idea is to remember his existence made a difference and not to dwell on his passing. The iris of the eye are the aperture blades of a camera lens, drawn using a cross hatching technique to keep the shading clean. I am 26 and new to San Diego from Chicago where I got the tattoo done. I take after my grandfather as photographer and work as a server downtown and in Hillcrest.
