Scott Peters aide junkets to Philly
You would think Peters and his staff would stay away from this stuff with his re-election challenge. No matter who "pays" the immediate tab, ultimately it's the taxpayers who pay big-time with sweetheart deals for the hosts. A host pays a few thousands. We citizens pay billions.— February 25, 2014 5:14 p.m.
Faulconer’s wife pitches street closing for event in June
@ Paul O'Sullivan: What are you talking about? "First Lady" is often used for a mayor's wife. None other than the New York Times used it last week. "For New York City’s First Lady, a Chief of Staff but Still No Defined Role." Clearly, Bob Filner's use of the term (or his fiance's use of the term) was inappropriate, but in this case it's perfectly normal. I would think a "public relations executive" would know when to mince words and when not. At least if you want to get mad about something, try to pick something that matters. It's commonly used. And hardly the point of the story.— February 24, 2014 11:16 p.m.
Subsidy proponent pledges big to SDSU sports building
Hmmm. Somehow I can't see KPBS reporting on anything even remotely negative to The Jacobs Agenda(s). (Their interview with Nathan and his mother toward end of the mayoral primary was one of the worst decisions I've ever seen in local media - well, right after the VOSD publishing Nathan's latest self-serving piece about the Mountaintop. And the only reason Nathan continues to float around the local press is his connection to Jacobs.) It's all good, as long as it comes with money, I'm sure they're thinking. But it's not all good. Even giving to "arts" and "education" can be bad, if it's a bad idea, or a self-serving idea. Their Balboa Park disaster (the bridge, etc.) was probably in collaboration with arts groups in the park. And other arts groups stayed quiet, worried about future monies. I don't think all philanthropy is good. Only when its smart.— February 19, 2014 2:24 p.m.
Dean in UCSD money "laundering" case to step down
Excellent reporting. The first story, and this follow-up.— February 17, 2014 9:28 p.m.
San Diego's Sacramento lobbyist to admit illegal gifting
Suggest interim-Mayor Todd Gloria, as a parting gift, could un-"re-hire" Sloat and gang. It was his executive action that got us back into this mess. Of course, this is just a symptom, of a totally broken campaign/lobbying system. I hope Sloat's fine will cover at least a small portion of the taxpayers' money spent to dig up the dirt, but I doubt it.— February 7, 2014 2:38 p.m.
Special-events fees and the mayoral hopeful’s wife
Seems like such a simple solution, if they wanted to solve it. If Wormser has "complete authority" she must use "something" in her head, as a guide. A standardized fee schedule seems like a no brainer. Clearly it would protect taxpayers and save time on part of city-paid staff. Problem is, the event planning companies (and their clients) likely are not motivated to resolve it. And it seems as though Wormser is not motivated either, since it could be so easily memorialized in a quick memo.— February 3, 2014 5:02 p.m.
Pentagon withholding funds from General Atomics and others
..."enhancements to demonstrate compliance"? and "cost-withhold" is a noun? Love that government/corporate speak.— January 28, 2014 5:39 p.m.
D.A. Dumanis donor was cocaine felon
Somehow you would think that a District Attorney running for Mayor would be adamant that her campaign finance team would do some basic due diligence related to contributors. And you would think they would know how to see if someone had been involved in criminal activity! Guess not. Maybe it "doesn't pay" to look too closely: limits the campaign cash. LOL— January 27, 2014 11:47 p.m.
Car dealer Marc Chase led swinging, violent lifestyle, suit claims
I do think we need to know as much as we can about all the characters in this drama. And sometimes it's not going to be pretty. Not sure what the previous commenter is saying about people (Jaquie? other people's fathers?) and different children of Chase? Not sure what he's talking about but he seems to be injecting some personal connections he has? I would say people are interested in the connections of the people in the federal case of which Mr. Chase is apparently a significant part. At this point motives and who's who is still up in the air.— January 27, 2014 6:51 p.m.
Adam Sandler occupies Manchester’s Austin hotel site
"having some sort of RV event" - Ha Ha. Enjoyed it. Good luck, Papa and Papa, Jr.— January 18, 2014 9:25 a.m.
