Issa's new beard and an aide's free travel
Hillary, a modern day Richard Nixon?! Issa is hilarious. Don't think conjuring up the ghost of Tricky Dick is going to be a good strategy for Republicans. Totally over the travel thing by members of the staffs, paid for by outside interests. Or travel by members of Congress or other elected bodies either. No way to run a country. Way too much conflict inherent in those trips.— March 27, 2015 4:41 p.m.
Mayor’s foundation fueled by lobbyist funds
No behesting? Then, whoops, there was a lot of behesting? Six contributions in the same amount, clearly a sign of focused fundraising. All you have to do is ask, apparently, and the money comes rolling in. Surely this is just the beginning, there are so many more people who need a little special attention from City Hall.— March 11, 2015 8 a.m.
Media spin and legal drama merge in Briggs battle
Seems a lot of people think this is about Cory Briggs (above comments) when really it is about City Attorney Goldsmith and what he knew and when did he know it. And about whether influential people were used to get KPBS and its friends to go along with a hit piece on an attorney who has sued and won some cases against the City Attorney. Perhaps Jan Goldsmith is embarrassed? And looking for revenge? Or is he just wanting to help the Hoteliers? I don't think this side of Goldsmith came out before the election, and it is something voters should have known about earlier.— February 26, 2015 5:56 p.m.
Desert Line grit
These sleazy connections MTS is developing are actually shocking. And not much is shocking these days. How many HR people or attorneys does have on staff with huge salaries? Couldn't they do some due diligence on the "partners" that Jablonski is bringing into the operation? This is the only thing in town that has dragged on longer than the Charger departure, and both ought to come to an end. You can understand train fans having a pipe dream about the line, but to think a public agency is still involved (with no resolution) at this late date is astonishing.— February 19, 2015 3:02 p.m.
Pavement lobby
The $700 "construction clerical" contribution is kind of amazing. It might be a first in my time reading about political donations. Most clerical workers - unless there's a closer connection - don't do $700 contributions. Could it be that some people still don't understand the rules?— February 19, 2015 2:51 p.m.
Texas to furnish UCSD's racial affairs chief
Academia is getting more and more absurd. "Becky Petitt, currently associate vice president and chief of staff to Christine A. Stanley, vice president and associate provost for diversity at Texas A & M in College Station. .." All those titles. And that's just one VP and her "chief of staff." Way too much money floating around, apparently. And UCSD should be doing weeding out instead of hiring.— January 27, 2015 3:37 p.m.
Mark Fabiani's San Diego takedown
Many changing roles and confusing statements over the years by these spoke-people, if we didn't have this kind of chronological reminder. Great run through of just the recent history of all of this. Had to laugh at this line from the Chargers, on the late-not-great, stadium-convention-center combo idea: "The idea is to make room for convention uses in the end zones and cover the grass as needed to provide exhibit space," reported U-T San Diego at the time. Good try, Chargers, but a Fail.— January 16, 2015 6:48 p.m.
Juan Vargas's family funding values
Money from these guys ("....and the political action committees of military contractors BAE Systems, Northrup Grumman, and General Dynamics.") and we wonder why the war machine keeps on chugging. As for the golf fundraiser, the whole thing is outrageous. Yup, Vargas is a prime organizer and consumer of golf events. Has been for years.— January 6, 2015 12:33 p.m.
Mutiny on the Google Glass
Would have thought the addicted sailor's symptoms were from The Onion if I hadn't known better. Pretty crazy. What the future holds, I guess - dealing with all these realities.— December 22, 2014 5:01 p.m.
Copley's deadly Cuba ties
Mr. Hellyer's comment tries not to say a lot, but instead says a lot. ("I will not confirm or deny your charges. I have nothing to say about them.") Interesting story. So much we who lived through this still do not know.— December 20, 2014 10:08 p.m.
