consider the testimony of Barry Butler, a PhD expert in Stirling solar technology who concluded:
“Major reliability problems with the SAIC Stirling engine included hydrogen leakage through joints and seals, internal engine seal leakage, swashplate actuator stalls, and heater head braze joint hydrogen leaks. That means that on average once every 40 hours a problem of some type required shut down and maintenance. Nearly continuous maintenance was necessary to keep the system “available” to generate electricity. … The commercial viability of the Stirling system is unproven at this time. …there is no possible way that dish/Stirling solar can move from high cost prototype models with substantive reliability concerns to large-scale production of high reliability low-cost commercial models by 2008 and full operation of a 12,000 dish, 300 MW array by the end of 2010.” — May 28, 2008 2:13 p.m.
Sunrise Powerlink — a chess game for the big guys
$1.5 billion in solar panels at $3.5/watt listed by SCE would install 428 megawatts of capacity onto San Diego rooftops. Why in the world are we the worst in the state when it comes to SDG&E encouraging solar panels, when we are in the best geographical position in the state to use them? Between state and federal incentive programs, long-term leases on panels and the savings in not buying new power plants, another 500 megawatts could easily be installed. That would add close to 1,000 megawatts of power right were it is needed without a single new power plant being built and without using any additional fuel to run them for the next 20-30 years. Consider also what the existing SDG&E powerlines in the backcountry have cost us by starting huge fires burning thousands of homes. There was a 100+ acre fire in Penasquitos canyon last month that started under power lines very near where the Sunrise Powerlink is proposed to terminate. I never heard a peep on what caused the fire other than "it started under power lines on a hot and windy day". I am guessing that if there was another cause of the fire, SDG&E would have let us know.— May 28, 2008 2:31 p.m.

AG Jerry Brown Claims He Didn't Know San Diego Has an Upcoming Election. Is Brown Staggeringly Stupid or Does He Think San Diegans Are Staggeringly Stupid?
Everyone can rest easy. The sole ethical breech in the mighty fortress of integrity that is the Sanders administration has been plugged. It turns it was MacSweeney who was responsible for it all. As Sanders was taught to say long ago: "Nothing to see here people, move along, nothing to see." BTW, I thought Sanders' reactions to Bidwell were priceless in the clip on Flannery's blog. He goes to the water glass each time he is accused of dishonesty, and cocks his head and goes for his water when MacSweeney is mentioned, in a manner that sure looks like he knew exactly what was coming. Pretty hard to believe he didn't know about it beforehand.— May 24, 2008 7:30 a.m.

SimplyCommonSense said: "I would much rather have had Aguirre simply do his job and respond to the AG's repeated requests for information." Funny, but I don't believe you. I say that because you are not equally criticizing the AG for ignoring the City Attorney and failing to investigate Tom Story and Sunroad. That would have been in their job description. Writing an investigative report over petty name calling is not. Sanders feels free to swear at Francis, but when he receives a little criticism for the very dubious actions the city took relating to Sunroad, he runs crying to the AG.— May 23, 2008 3:45 p.m.

SimplyCommonSense, The AG just stated in an official report that Sunroad did everything legally correct. They weren't asked for that opinion and they didn't do any investigation to come up with that opinion, but that opinion will help San Diego lose a $40 million dollar lawsuit. You seem so tickled that Aguirre was scolded that you are completely losing sight of what this stunt by the local AG office will cost the city.— May 23, 2008 1:39 p.m.
AG's Report Clearing Sanders Is a Joke, as Expected. Here's Some Advice: Follow the Money

AG Jerry Brown Claims He Didn't Know San Diego Has an Upcoming Election. Is Brown Staggeringly Stupid or Does He Think San Diegans Are Staggeringly Stupid?
To add to post #1: If the horrible act being investigated by the AG was the making of an accusation without enough corroborating evidence in an opinion piece, then how in the world does the AG, in an official report no less, make an equally serious charge based on the word of one of the people being investigated with no attempt whatsoever to find any evidence to corroborate the charge? This smacks of typical San Diego dirty politics: Accuse the accuser of the crime you are accused with, rinse and repeat. In the pension mess, it was Diane Shippione who was problem and needed to be arrested. In the campaign for mayor, it was Donna Frye who was the insider to trying to block the publics right to know. And on and on.— May 23, 2008 10:43 a.m.
How San Diego's pension debt ballooned
Don, You ought to have your IT guys look into allowing edits to comments. Many forums allow editing an entry for up to five minutes or so, before locking it in. It would make many posters (such as myself) seem a lot less dense if we could quickly change the types of obvious typos that always seem to creep into my posts as I am editing them down (such as "our" instead of "are" in the post above, which was left over from a partially omitted sentence and then not changed. Aaargh!)— May 22, 2008 12:59 a.m.
How San Diego's pension debt ballooned
"formerly great American City." When was San Diego ever great? All I can find our references to politicians loudly proclaiming its greatness to either deflect attention away from some criminal activity, or to sell the idea of some giveaway/improvement we don't need (e.g. "A great city like San Diego must have a new football stadium") So, can anybody come up with a time that San Diego was ever truly great? I'll be generous and set the bar nice and low, to be a time when the city was arguably only mildly corrupt, and the city mattered nationally for some reason other than pretty beaches and being a playground for the rich.— May 22, 2008 12:31 a.m.
Psssst! Wanna Make 90 Percent a Month? Those Who Bit on Escondido Ponzi Scheme Got Taken to the Cleaners
Don, I am interested in solar panels and came across a company with an amazing new product. In an industry where improvements of 10%-15% are hugely significant, they are advertising solar panels that are 18 times more efficient (1800%) than standard industry panels. Put another way, a current solar panel is able to collect about 15% of the energy hitting it. This new panel claims to collect over 200% of the energy hitting it, which is a pretty neat trick (not to mention violates the laws of physics). The reason I thought you might be interested in this is that they are a Carlsbad company and they are running an obvious scam to sell dealerships and are taking down payments on panels that are physically impossible to produce. Here is a good link explaining what they have been up to: http://twinkle_toes_engineering.home.comcast.net/… Here is their website: http://dbksolar.com/ The president and patent applicant is Darry L Boyd Sr. I don't know anything about him.— May 20, 2008 9:23 a.m.
