Frye Thwarts Preposterous Proposed Ballot Language
"It's an open question as to whether a man who can't control his weight has the self-discipline required to run a major city. " True, but replace "a man" with "Jerry Sanders" and the question is no longer open.— April 2, 2010 3:33 p.m.
County's Job Loss One of Worst in U.S.
Don, if a politician promised real change, I wouldn't believe it. When Obama offered change we could believe in, by definition he meant he wasn't going to change anything actually worth changing, because if he did we wouldn't believe him. In that regard, I think he is giving us exactly what he promised us, which is nothing.— April 2, 2010 1:03 p.m.

Don, Beyster was the only reason the headquarters were in La Jolla. Once Beyster stepped down and the company went public it was only a matter of time before headquarters moved. The local SAIC presence is large and I don't see that changing, but the company has grown much faster in other areas than in San Diego as of late. Time will tell. One of SAIC's core competencies has become the "lobbying" (buying?) of politicians, so a move to Washington DC makes perfect sense.— April 2, 2010 1 p.m.

Don, my recollection (from a video at the Birch Aquarium) is that the tuna industry moved to massive ships with the ability to flash freeze so they could stay out for months at a time, which made the local fleet obsolete. I don't think the big boats were ever going to be based in San Diego, so the industry's days here were numbered.— April 2, 2010 12:16 p.m.

To follow up on what maninthemirror said (things change): SAIC is one of the largest defense contractors in the US, but they don't manufacture much. They are primarily a software an engineering company, and they do a lot of command and control and intelligence work.— April 2, 2010 12:08 p.m.

FYI: Here is a link to a better version of the Detroit ghost town photos. It is the website of the french photographers who took the pictures. http://www.marchandmeffre.com/detroit/index.html— April 2, 2010 10:48 a.m.

Doh! I crossed posts with maininthemirror! To follow up on his automobile analogy, has anybody been to Detroit lately? Things definitely do change. If you haven't seen this photo gallery, I found it mind blowing. Detroit has lost half of its population since the 1950's. It has horrible unemployment and cannot sustain itself. http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,188…— April 2, 2010 10:40 a.m.
County's Job Loss One of Worst in U.S.
"General Dynamics, Ryan Aeronautical. Those companies are long gone." Ryan was bought in 1968 by Teledyne (not the 80's). Northrop bought Ryan from Teledyne in 1999. Northrop has a very large presence in San Diego. They have a large office in Kearny Mesa (probably part of the old GD complex), and they have a large facility I turned down an offer with them in 2004. They have a large facility west of I15 at Camino Del Norte (formerly TRW), and the former Ryan facility E of I15 at Camino Del Norte. The Ryan facility designs and builds UAVs, including the Global Hawk. The new stuff they are working on is pretty amazing. GA also has a facility in the same general area that designs and builds the Predator, a competing product to the Global Hawk. There is still production going on in San Diego. SAIC is still huge on Campus Point (near UCSD), Raytheon has a large local presence, Lockheed Martin is here as well as L-3, Logicon, ViaSat, etc. It is still one of the biggest sectors in San Diego.— April 2, 2010 10:28 a.m.
Union-Tribune sold cheap to Platinum Equity
A few months ago there was a huge yacht next to the Star of India called Apoise. That thing was a monster (219'8", 89th largest yacht in the world), but this thing is even bigger (248'6", 56th largest yacht). For perspective; Larry Ellison owns the 453' Rising Sun (6th), and Paul Allen owns the 413' Octopus(9th), so the get quite a bit bigger (hard to believe)! Here are some obscene pictures of Octopus. I particularly like the heli-pad, and the fact it sails with a 40' submarine and a 63' tender. http://damncoolpics.blogspot.com/2009/02/worlds-l… I can't find an owner listed for Ocean Victory http://www.superyachttimes.info/yachts/details/83/ The Apoise is owned by Dave Ritchie, owner of Ritchie Bros. Auctions of Canada. It was scheduled to be sold yesterday at an (of course) auction. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.ph…— April 1, 2010 1:47 p.m.
Despite Alleged Conflicts, Bersin Gets Border Post on Interim Basis
Response to Don, powet #18: Don said: "Some of the biggest abuses are in the judiciary. ... If the former U.S. attorney in SD, not to mention head of the schools, paid domestic help off the books, it was not only a violation -- it was stupid." Don't forget that Bersin's wife is a Superior Court judge, so they really have all the bases covered in this.— March 29, 2010 1:26 p.m.
