Suit claims police raids at Cheetahs caused loss of business
Let's reform this Police Department and start with Mayor Sunny's Chief Shelley Zimmerman who has been around since the beginning of Time, knows everything and everybody, covers up as much as is necessary and keeps on temporizing over those troublesome lapel-cams for the boys and girls in blue. This woman is part of the local police culture: we need one of those fancy "searches" that will bring us credible out-of-town police leadership.— August 5, 2015 6:40 p.m.
Suit claims police raids at Cheetahs caused loss of business
But is he better or worse than former City Attorney Casey Gwynne? Remember him?— August 5, 2015 3:03 p.m.

Homeless library patrons must park their gear at the door
The entire area around (and perhaps in) the Downtown Library is awash with homeless people and their backpacks, bags and carts. Best to check 'em at the door when entering, perhaps in the adjacent Joan and Irwin Jacobs Patio? But it's still a great location for the Library building -- if you are John Moores with JMI real-estate to peddle in the neighborhood. And a great co-location for a public charter school too, since that was the only way to pay for the boondoggle.— August 5, 2015 2:56 p.m.
Big cash for Myrtle Cole from Mission Valley
At present the 4th District area of San Diego has two utterly crass African-American women representing the community at City Council and on the School Board respectively. They are both Democrats and they both have financially enriched themselves using their public office as a platform. It is shameful: southeast deserves much better. Councilwoman Myrtle Cole pays her legal debts for slandering a political opponent by taking money from Mission Valley developers and then, quid pro quo, approves an empty study of Qualcomm that costs the taxpayers $2.1 million. And she's not even from Chicago either. School Board Trustee and President Marne Foster runs an on-line fundraiser, allegedly to help finance two of her kids' expensive college costs -- the younger of whom reportedly crowed about getting his high school principal fired through Foster's direct intervention with Superintendent Cindy Martin. When criticized for the money-grab, Foster claimed she "sleeps well at night."— August 5, 2015 12:05 a.m.
Theodore Geisel statue weeps tears of purest gold as posthumous book is published
I thought UCSD's Department of Alchemy had just decamped to USC, along with all federal funding. These days government grants are as rare as that golden teardrop.— August 1, 2015 2:01 p.m.
Will CivicSD approve Trump-like sign for old Sempra HQ?
Oh well, that's just a few feet shorter than the sign with five-foot-high letters plastered on the wedding-cake low-rise structure of the Mt. Soledad Cross announcing the name of the owner "memorial association." And that's in the middle of a public park. If you ask me, seeing "Manchester" is less offensive than being reminded of "Sempra Energy."— July 29, 2015 4:39 p.m.
Dr. Seuss gets posthumous front page
More for Audrey Geisel, Dr. Seuss' business-minded widow, who marketed the so-so stage-play of his wonderful book "How The Grinch Stole Christmas."— July 27, 2015 11:36 a.m.
Rewriting Southeast San Diego
Yo, this is the most ridiculous thing I have read in a while. Instead of boycotting Bonnie Dumanis, how about getting some help from your elected representative, City Councilwoman Myrtle Cole? She has been notably AWOL from grassroots anything in Southeast, super-busy approving $2.1 million for a Qualcomm Stadium "study,"I guess. But good luck on selling that new record --which is what this is really about.— July 27, 2015 9:29 a.m.
Hillary Clinton: Irwin Jacobs's home companion
AlexClarke is always a dark thinker and not always on the mark. But in this instance, mentioning the high-flying One Percenters featured in this story and reminding us how little attention is paid the travails of ordinary people in this country, he is dead right. It is no wonder we have historically low voter turnout, among other serious troubles. No voice, no choice, no access. But I have to say, Trump is not entertaining: he's a symptom of the di$eas$e.— July 26, 2015 5:39 p.m.
