Technicolor Munsters!
So funny, so outrageous, so charmingly lacking a politically-correct filter. It's a good thing the Boss is a West Coast Catholic. It's always fun to hear about more movie-loving Marks relatives back in the Midwest.— March 30, 2016 12:50 p.m.
$35 tab for Moores dog-and-pony SDSU stadium show
What can one say to this exposition of venality, chicanery and just plain skating? We remember so well the late '90's civic chorus of praise for John Moore's philanthropy -- as if there were no ulterior motive -- and the exchange of support for the ballpark deal from ever-political School Superintendent Alan Bersin in return for Moore's backing a dicey school bond measure. Ancient history, but I guess we're doomed to repeat it.— March 28, 2016 9:04 p.m.
Movie reviews from the '70s
Duncan Shepherd was erudite, opinionated and wrote very loooong movie reviews for the Reader for a very loooong time. To his eternal discredit, he panned the aging, overweight, superb actress Simone Signoret in a sentimental movie called "Madame Rosa," set in the impoverished North African neighborhoods of Paris, France. Shepherd did redeem himself in his farewell review, a rare, memorable, heartfelt love letter to the movies. Still and all, I prefer the mensch-y, smart and funny Scott Marks to his detached olympian predecessor.— March 28, 2016 8:40 p.m.
Tribune editorials speak as one: monopoly rules
Well, not ALL the issues.— March 26, 2016 12:02 p.m.
Fox tip-toes out of Bridgepoint's hen house
A strategic disclaimer from Bridgepoint to the SEC about ex-UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox's reasons for leaving their board. How do they get away with such whitewashing? When Bernie Sanders becomes President, academicians will be too embarrassed to feather their nests in this gross manner. (Maybe this marks the nadir of 35 years of national infatuation with "the business model" in every aspect of American life.)— March 24, 2016 11:06 p.m.
Tribune editorials speak as one: monopoly rules
As Tribune Company out of Chicago continues to suck the life out of printing press-less and building-free San Diego Union-Tribune and the more viable but still-sickly Los Angeles Times, it seems possible that both will succumb to wasting disease. And then no tyro like Eli Broad will find value in buying either one and we will be left looking "foolish, and full of tears." (William Butler Yeats)— March 22, 2016 5:33 p.m.
Chargers charity continues skid
Bad idea for the Spanos clan to cut back on gift-giving before the City signs on the dotted line. John Moores made a name for himself as a genuine philanthropist in the years preceding his JMI/Petco Park ripoff. Moores' name actually was reverently equated with generosity when in fact he was greasing the skids to develop public land for personal gain downtown in what became "East Village." Never mind that he also corrupted a sitting city councilmember with bribes while himself avoiding punishment. I guess the Spanoses lack Moore's savoir faire, legerdemain, whatever French thing you want to call it.— March 19, 2016 10:41 p.m.
Your guide to movie theater parking
I cannot speak to the accessability of many of these venues, but your UTC Arclight experience rang a bell of sympathy. There's a ton of construction going on up there and it's a miracle anyone goes to this theater at all right now. I am told the next phase includes the demolition and rebuilding of Nordstrom on the east side of the complex. At present, I turn south on Genesee from La Jolla Village Drive, make a left at the light at Nobel and left again into the boulevarded entry to the south side of UTC where Macy's and Red Robin Restaurant are located. Head north to where Macy's adjoins the massive dig and park at the edge of nomansland. Enter Macy's doorway, go through menswear and look for daylight of an inner mall door, past the Mac cosmetics counter to the outdoor playground, past the pool with fish statues. Hang a left at the first intersection where directional signs point to the Arclight. Its escalator is on the right, just past an Italian caffe and gelato shop.— March 16, 2016 9:55 p.m.

Unrestrained boosterism and biased reporting in U-T’s future?
You just write a news-ish story about Bette's Dress Shoppe and then put the word ("advertisement") in parentheses at the top or the bottom and lo, there is your "advertising content." It gets labeled. Readers will be able to discern the difference. It's tacky, but it's not the end of the world. It diminishes the gravitas of actual reporting, but these ARE desperate times, so I'm not complaining as we go slip sliding away.— March 10, 2016 7:57 p.m.
