Quid pro Peters
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall a special provision in the actual implementation of disastrous NAFTA that prohibited Mexican trucks and truckers from roadways in CA and maybe the entire USA. I don't think this ever changed. I also recall that then-Congressman Bob Filner was key to making sure that was the way things worked: no (uninspected unsafe) Mexican trucks and no (amphetamine-wired) Mexican truck drivers allowed to cross the border.)— November 6, 2016 11:26 a.m.
Homeless PR agent
A very good idea: always responding negatively will reap nothing new or better. San Diego's huge homeless population is a disgrace and black mark on Mayor Sunny's otherwise slickly successful agenda and will come back to haunt him should he run for higher office. If Stacie Spector helps the addled and addicted folks on the streets, it will be a win for everyone.— November 6, 2016 11:12 a.m.
Blink-182 frontman Tom Delong talks to John Podesta
Last summer Wiki-Leaks information brought down Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, for favoring the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton over strong challenger Bernie Sanders. Last week Wiki-Leaks also outed interim DNC chairman Donna Brazile who was fired as a longtime paid commentator at CNN, for passing along debate questions in advance to Hillary Clinton. Standard Dem response to these breaches of basic fair-play is to label the information "Russian interference" and, as pointed out here, to refuse to acknowledge or deny their accuracy. Along with still wishing the Cleveland Indians had won the World Series, I'm hoping Obama will pardon Wiki-Leaks enabler Eric Snowden before exiting the White House; that we will manage to get dark money out of politics and go to public funding of elections; that the campaign season will be reduced by law to three months max; that the defense budget will be reduced sufficiently to reform public education and repair the nation's roads and bridges; and that we will finally get rid of the arcane "electoral college."— November 5, 2016 1:13 a.m.
SDSU and the big-money politics behind Lilac Hills Ranch
Here, as in the story about Wiki-Leaks and San Diego, is incontrovertible evidence that money makes the world go 'round. Cast your vote in the 2016 election, folks, as you are being urged to do by TV stations making record profits off incessant political advertising and billionaire environmentalist Dem Tom Steyer who recently was reported to have had Trump investments. But don't kid yourself about what really counts if you want to fly some cockamamie movie project or get an experimental drug for your goner spouse or elect an honest politician to public office.— November 5, 2016 12:49 a.m.
Tronc'ed again: Union-Tribune faces yet more jobless fears
I'm beginning to think that Ken Doctor is as awful as tronc leader Mike Ferro: whenever one ship sinks beneath the waves, Doctor produces another rubber dinghy. Doctor ought to put a sock in his baseless speculation at this point. More important than Doctor's flimsy theories, when the bankers who underwrite these massive transactions are reliably reported to have walked away from a Gannett/tronc deal and when the CEO of putative tronc buyer Gannett reports a huge earnings decline and then hangs up the phone before follow-up questions can be asked -- well, that sounds seriously bleak. I am so sad for everyone valiantly producing the San Diego Union-Tribune and for its remaining readers. I am sad for the emaciated Los Angeles Times with its growing lists of "special correspondents" in lieu of official reporters. It is terrible to witness these death throes. But great stories are still appearing. I will keep on subscribing and waiting for that morning newspaper on my front step until the last word is written.— October 27, 2016 9:02 p.m.
Dakota pipeline opponents take stand in La Jolla
Obama has a say: he is the President with a bully pulpit. He also is the boss of the Corps of Engineers. There is plenty he could do, if he chose to act. I too wonder why he doesn't.— October 27, 2016 6:59 p.m.
Yes on K?
Todd Gloria should be confident: even I voted to send him up to Sac and off our City Council. My next least-favorite person in the world of alleged Democrats is Steve Peace, whose falsely labeled lobby, "Independent Voters Project", is pushing Charter amendments K and L requiring November balloting for mayoral races and citizens initiatives. Those two items also got my vote. But I voted No on D, Peace's collusion with lawyer Corey Briggs and slickster John Moores to take over Qualcomm Stadium and its parking lots to benefit Peace's alma mater San Diego State.— October 26, 2016 10:06 p.m.
Cottages to blossom in Balboa Park
I would remind your xenophobic self that up until 1848, all of California south of Monterey was part of Mexico. And the (inflated) 20 million Mexican people you seem to imagine are living here without documentation -- pay taxes. Double congrats to Enrique Morones for overcoming virulent opposition like yours.— October 26, 2016 1:33 p.m.
Dakota pipeline opponents take stand in La Jolla
Great that you covered the local protest in support of peaceful Native peoples opposing the expansion in North Dakota of an oil pipeline onto tribal lands and threatening the Missouri River. The Republican governor of North Dakota is playing hardball -- calling out state police and National Guard, macing protesters, using police dogs, and arresting many -- including "Democracy Now" journalist Amy Goodman who is now out on bail. Obama, in town for a big-ticket Democratic fundraiser, later yesterday morning played golf at Torrey Pines. He should find the will to pull the plug on this project and save historic Lakota Sioux lands and waters from contamination.— October 25, 2016 6:50 p.m.
Mobbed-up memories evoked by Trump's SD donor list
Well, apparently Hillary got some warm words from Obama in La Jolla, if not more cash. According to a story in today's Los Angeles Times, headlined, "Obama on campaign trail for her and himself," reporter Christi Parsons wrote, "At a fundraising brunch in La Jolla on Monday, Obama emphasized the importance of a big Clinton win to preserve and advance the gains of his administration."— October 25, 2016 6 p.m.
