Will GOP's Sherman play his stadium card for Alvarez?
Let's hope a genuine coalition of Democrats and Republicans on the new City Council joins to elect David Alvarez president of that presently impotent body. If Scott Sherman joins the Dems to make a majority for Alvarez, it will be to Sherman's great credit and for the good of the City. City Council led by David Alvarez would establish council as a countervailing legislative force to offset the present near-total power of the Strong Mayor's office. Myrtle Cole is a shady Democrat in Name Only (DINO) who poorly represents the needs of her community and serves herself instead. Sadly, she is from the same neighborhood and cut from the same cloth as resigned and disgraced School Board member Marne Foster. Following departing DINO Council president Sherri Lightner, who was also notably AWOL in helping her constituents, Myrtle Cole is happy to collaborate with the Mayor's financiers and fellow GOP council members rather than cooperate with Democratic colleagues Georgette Gomez, Barbara Bry, Chris Ward and David Alvarez to move San Diego forward.— December 12, 2016 12:14 p.m.
The perfect Christmas present for the avid film goer
Scott, it would be wrong to finance a WMD for the Reader's movie critic, though I wouldn't mind personally tasing the management at Landmark. Landmark's latest travesty since closing the UCSD-adjacent La Jolla Village site is the cockamamie Hillcrest cinemas' "remodel." The once-serviceable Hillcrest theater now sells tickets inside its small lobby instead of outside where patrons easily used to queue up. (They also got rid of the outside bench where people used to wait for companions.) Parking garage chits are validated only after a second wait at the separate concession stand line -- not at the time of ticket purchase. (Why not just require an upfront Raisinets surtax?) Finally, the number of seats in each theater has been drastically reduced by replacing them with giant recliners. Now you can pay more for a ticket online in advance, but there is no seat reservation system, so it's possible to end up sitting in the neck-breaking first row. Alternatively, you still can schlep to Hillcrest to buy a ticket in person five minutes before screen-time and risk being told the theater is full. I don't know what happens to the parking garage fee in that case, but I do know I won't be going there anymore under these conditions.— December 10, 2016 7:29 p.m.
In Standing Rock, the world is the bubble
Great story and wonderful video. Recent events -- and wintry weather -- have overtaken this information. The Army Corps of Engineers has now officially stopped Energy Transfer Company's unpermitted project until there is a full environmental impact report on the plan to cross under the wide Missouri River with a pipeline at the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. The Pipeline, which threatens the Missouri River drinking water for Sioux and other Native American tribes in the area, is slated to carry oil from the North Dakota Bakken oil fields to the Gulf of Mexico where it will then be shipped to other countries around the world. Earlier, a more northerly pipeline crossing of the Missouri near Bismarck, N.D., had been rejected as too risky for the water supply of that city's mainly Anglo residents.— December 10, 2016 6:29 p.m.
Like Johnson, like Faulconer?
They may have campaign financing irregularities and Jacobs family friendship in common, but it is a stretch to link our own Mayor Sunny with outgoing Sac Mayor Kevin Johnson. Just last year, Johnson got a pie in the face from an angry citizen and he responded by punching the guy. I am sure Mayor Faulconer had such ghetto impulses Porter-Novelli-ed out of him long ago and besides, our mayor is married to Barbie, while Johnson is married to the Dragon Lady.— December 6, 2016 9:35 p.m.
Copley remembered in U-T
Surely you meant to say "venture capitalist" when describing Platinum Equity's Tom Gores who had a brief run owning the San Diego Union-Tribune after playboy David Copley. It's true Gores dismantled the old U-T after he bought it, but he established Jeff Light as editor who has proved himself an able manager in the face of the declining fortunes of our homeless Tribune-now-tronc property.— December 3, 2016 2:10 p.m.
Trump dump
Gosh, I sure wish Mayor Sunny were as responsive to years-long complaints from City constituents who have to hold their noses against stench when visiting once-scenic-now-stinking La Jolla Cove. Along with departing City Council representative Sherri Lightner -- who admittedly has much less power than the Strong Mayor -- Hizzoner Kevin Faulconer has been AWOL on fixing this disgusting state of affairs. It's a lot worse than a policy of no credit cards at the dump. As for Assemblywoman Loretta Gonzalez's hilarious comment about being enthralled by her boyfriend's speaking skills, well, it's charitable to call that proof of love being deaf as well as blind. And by the way, we don't want pseudo-Democrats Nathan Fletcher OR Tony Young for County Supervisor either.— December 3, 2016 2:01 p.m.
Charity starts at home
Myrland was responsible for unforgivable chintzy cuts in KPBS programming that persist to the present day: hour-long programs repeated on weekend days, relegating Philadelphia's Terry Gross' interviews of writers and musicians to nighttime, installing stupid quiz-format game shows. Dumbing-down "content" must mean more money available for early KPBS retirees like Myrland himself.— November 29, 2016 6:37 p.m.
Ex-councilman dodges domestic violence charges
Heaven forfend this guy should become a County Supervisor, as has sometimes been rumored in these pages.— November 29, 2016 6:01 p.m.
James Thurber, Hunter Thompson, H.L. Mencken give thanks for new American president
Amusing, but suspect underlying Trumpish bias.— November 23, 2016 10:14 a.m.
Audit hits SDSU interest conflicts and illegal faculty discounts
I have noticed lately that inewsource out there at SDSU/KPBS (?) has established a reporting partnership with KFMB Channel 8. How does that work?— November 22, 2016 4:28 p.m.
