Patriots Day, a net cast wide but with little care
The Boston Marathon bomber did NOT attend Dartmouth College. He was said to be a toker and weed supplier at a community college In Dartmouth, Mass.— January 11, 2017 4:04 p.m.
Costly backstory of a big-money political power couple
The words "noble," "selfless" and "our betters" do not in any way describe Nathan Fletcher and Lorena Gonzalez. But they are well-suited to each other and I wish them well. Why not, at the dawn of a new year?— January 3, 2017 9:41 p.m.
Costly backstory of a big-money political power couple
I also liked the odd way Jeff Elman, UCSD prof who hired Nathan, calculated his prospective salary: "28% effort with a base of $178,500." Is Fletcher officially still on the payroll up there? Has his "effort" increased?— January 3, 2017 1:27 p.m.
Costly backstory of a big-money political power couple
This story is why we love Matt Potter's reportage for the Reader. Thank you.— January 3, 2017 1:09 p.m.
Ten minutes with Debbie Reynolds
A perfect reminiscence -- warm, personal, generous and kind. "Singin' in the Rain" remains a favorite for me -- mostly because of Gene Kelly, to tell the truth -- and I am surprised to learn now that Debbie Reynolds had to work at perfecting the dances in that film. Terrible to think about Debbie's final day following the shocking death of her daughter Carrie Fisher on a trans-Atlantic flight home. I am reminded of mothers and daughters everywhere who adore each other but struggle to find mutual understanding.— December 30, 2016 10:42 a.m.
Crime and drugs plague putative new Chargers home
What? Open sales of drugs in the acres of parking lots at South Coast Plaza? Costa Mesa crime can't compare with Chicago's this year, and it is an upscale improvement over the hilariously corrupt City of Carson, another once-rumored Chargers' home. I'm starting to feel sorry for Chargers owner Spanos who is looking more and more like a stateless refugee (but with money.)— December 28, 2016 10:37 p.m.
General Atomics has some explaining to do
Please, NRC, do NOT extend GA's response time to your list of discovered lapses in monitoring radiation at the "first new U.S. nuclear power plant...since 1996." Who knew they were still building these things? I wonder who lives in the area of Watts Bar Unit 2 in Tennessee. I bet they'll be sorry to have this poorly-managed time-bomb nearby.— December 28, 2016 10:23 p.m.
Rancho Santa Fe megamillionaire fails to disclose lobbying activities
Black acts with lobbying impunity thanks to apparent mayoral protection. His ethics fine is too low. And Robert Hickey used to work for John Moores? Knowing that makes me glad I didn't vote for Hickey for City Attorney.— December 28, 2016 3:35 p.m.
Must-see movies of 2016
Surprised to recognize the titles and and actually have seen more of Scott's favorite movies than Lickona's. ( Hmmm, I wonder what could that mean, since I see a lot of movies, but never at the Digital Gym.) Also, I thought "Neruda" hadn't opened yet in San Diego.— December 28, 2016 3:20 p.m.
Not with a roar, but a whimper
Respectfully, honestly, and with hope for some small change in the coming year, this reader HATES interviews with directors, actors, greensmen, cinematographers, caterers, and other film cognoscenti. Like, come ON, could we just get a review of the movie?— December 24, 2016 12:59 p.m.
