Butkiewicz gets free ride on Teamsters deal
The Labor Council is divided and desperate and turns its eyes to former labor leader Jerry Butkiewicz for help. Never mind the conflict of interest suggested here -- San Diego Unified School Board member Richard Barrera certainly never minded his own conflict of interest when he led the AFL-CIO group which then included the SDEA teachers union. It's what happens in San Diego. Having her old friend Butkiewicz at the Labor Council helm again won't bother Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher either, since her husband Nathan Fletcher is one Democratic candidate in a crowded race for County Supervisor this year, and he will need Labor's endorsement, money and volunteers if he is ever to be elected again to public office.— July 26, 2017 12:38 a.m.
Former Chipotle co-CEO to revamp La Jolla home
"Basements" have become the new end-run around floor-area-ratio regulations. I wonder if anybody ever thinks to test for radon in these "basements," as in other areas of the country below-ground rooms have shown high radon readings. (Radon exposure can cause lung cancer.)— July 22, 2017 2:20 p.m.
Former Chipotle co-CEO to revamp La Jolla home
Size matters. Moran is doubling the size of his house, a common practice now in La Jolla-area remodels or rebuilds. Reminds me of our President -- stupid, gross and over-the-top.— July 22, 2017 10:18 a.m.
Former Chipotle co-CEO to revamp La Jolla home
Moran is adding 4000 sf to a house that is how big? It's always useful to know the original size of a place that cost $8.5 million to get a sense of the grandiosity of the addition.— July 22, 2017 9:47 a.m.
Where to see Dunkirk in 70mm
Thank heaven I got my "Dunkirk" ticket at the 70 mm La Jolla AMC 12-plex! I appreciate this information. I am previewing it for an 11-year-old boy who is worrisomely fascinated with warfare in all its forms from medieval times to World Wars I and II. (I have not told him about a great-uncle who went to West Point and hated every minute of its plebe-hazing rigid social environment.) Trying to be positive, I tell the kid he can grow up to be a military historian somewhere.— July 21, 2017 5:08 p.m.
San Diego’s on for Ossoff
This is a resourceful tally of locals who were suckered into contributing to the campaign of novice Dem Jon Ossoff, disastrously running for Congress in Atlanta, Georgia. The guy didn't even live in the district he was seeking to represent! Apparently the Democratic National Committee also poured money into this hapless candidate, giving rise once again to charges that the DNC remains insular, damaged and profoundly out of touch since going all-in for Hillary Clinton for President. Glad I resisted the Ossoff hype and avoided getting outed in the San Diego Reader.— July 20, 2017 10:14 p.m.
The potholes of Harbor Drive
"Sadly, math, physics and the lack of safe driving techniques led to his demise." You know what, Just Wondering? Driving is a fact of modern life, not a privilege, and it is made more miserable by the number of cars and terrible condition of roadways around San Diego. Poor people take the execrable infrequent bus; next up the food chain are bicyclists; and then there are young people like swabbies who buy motor bikes or motorcycles because they are fun and less expensive to operate than cars. But they are dangerous. Bottom line is that City roads should be navigable. And when they are not, deadly accidents happen, bereaved families sue, the City is liable and taxpayers pay and pay and pay. I have seen bicyclists crash and runners suddenly topple over because of crevassed pavement. "Strong Mayor" Kevin Faulconer needs to pay attention and fix what is a citywide mess.— July 18, 2017 6:04 p.m.
Thunderheads coming
Have you ever listened to Scott Bass' daily surf report on KPBS? It is an aquatic poetic counterpoint to your description here of San Diego's outdoors.— July 17, 2017 8:32 p.m.
The potholes of Harbor Drive
I hope the Powell family has excellent lawyers and recovers a fortune from its lawsuit against the City for grossly negligent street maintenance. Many San Diego motorists suffer dangerous tire blowouts, bent rims and misalignment of their cars' wheels, but personal injuries and death? It is wrong to be cavalier about pothole repairs: these craters can maim and kill. Mayor Sunny needs to do something about it.— July 17, 2017 8:22 p.m.
How Navy culture may have caused the Fitzgerald disaster
Thanks to writer Kevin Eyer and photographer Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Kelly for a great Reader story about San Diego's own U.S. Navy. This was a real window on the tremendous responsibility borne by ships' captains and crews when navigating busy corridors of the vast Pacific Ocean. Modern-day Melville. I had read online earlier this summer about the U.S.S. Fitzgerald being struck amidship at night by a container vessel, about sailors drowning in their berths as they slept. Unimaginably terrifying and tragic. RIP.— July 16, 2017 6:20 p.m.
