La Jolla Parkway road rage and frustration
Unresponsiveness of the City to citizen concerns since "strong mayor" has become routine. Loud motorcycles set off car alarms in adjacent neighborhoods as they rev up heading out on La Jolla Parkway. But excessive speed on La Jolla Parkway inbound is dangerously worse. It's a steep downhill grade, divided by a concrete barrier. At the bottom are a series of stoplights at the infamous "throat" junction of several roads. Unless there's a traffic backup on the hill, everyone driving west is moving infinitely faster than the unlit posted 45 mph. I always worry about getting rear-ended if the traffic signals at the bottom change to red and a sudden stop is required and the guy following my car is texting on his phone.— November 13, 2017 7:54 p.m.
Scripps Ranch — cows gone, rattlers remain
I thought commenter Bob Gilberg amusingly and literately defended his turf against the hipster snideries of writer Moss Gropen. (Has he moved out of Scripps Ranch or does he still live there?) I was amazed to read about the continuing presence of "Mr. Scripps Ranch" himself, Col. Bob Dingeman, still setting "standards" for his community after all these years. As I think about throngs of homeless people living on the sidewalks of downtown near port-a-potties and hand-washing stations, and drunken revelers spilling into neighborhoods of North Park, I guess Scripps Ranch is a protected enclave -- and that's not all bad.— November 13, 2017 7:03 p.m.
Yes, but will He forgive Mark Wahlberg for this?
I don't think you should call Melania "Melanoma" and neither you nor I can imagine how terrible her life must be, to say nothing of her son, Baron. I also think Mel Gibson was blind drunk when he was so profane about Jews and that he seems to have straightened out since then. I also don't understand why you review schlock like this film when all it deserves is the famous black dot.— November 9, 2017 9:54 p.m.
Dallas oilman’s blessing
Wow, was McGrory bundling contributions as part of his $65,000 gift to Friends of SDSU? If it's all his dough, he must have something to gain from such generosity. (Re bribes, I heard today there is a current effort in Washington, D.C., to drop a pesky American regulation against our titans of industry engaging in "facilitation payments" when doing business abroad, as it works to disadvantage them with foreign competitors. How can you make American great again when the nanny state stands in the way?)— November 8, 2017 4:59 p.m.
U-T subletting newsroom space
Was that display ad "discretely" nestled or discreetly nestled in the Sunday real estate section? Homophones are hell.— October 23, 2017 10:38 p.m.
Manchester’s Navy Broadway complex: hurry up and wait
Isn't Thomas Barrack the guy who reportedly is making a bid to bail out the Weinstein Brothers enterprise? How many Barracks can there be? Not counting the One we had been waiting for whose first name was Barrack and is now retired.— October 19, 2017 9:44 p.m.
Golden Rule crashes Fleet Week, peacefully
Stop! Fuggedabout cavilling over the weapons of war. Let's hear it for the estimable Veterans for Peace who are untiring in their positive efforts to educate us about the expensive folly that is national "defense." And let's also praise The Golden Rule, a beautiful sailboat, that joined other military vessels in the harbor for Fleet Week. We can think about doing unto others as we wish they would do unto us and support peaceful resistance to the Orange One who heedlessly imperils the world with his braggadocio, blundering bluster and bullshit.— October 18, 2017 4 p.m.
Mission Beach's last big chunk
"Public land should be used for public purposes," and construction should follow the LETTER of the law.— October 16, 2017 11:09 p.m.
Mission Beach's last big chunk
This city has too few parks and that land would have made a beauty, especially in that congested neighborhood. But these days densification is in the official plan.— October 16, 2017 11:03 p.m.
Mission Beach's last big chunk
I miss Filner always. He also got rid of those expensive Stasi-state red light cameras.— October 16, 2017 10:56 p.m.
