Susan Davis debates GOP challenger almost 1/3 her age
What's to say about Rep. Susan Davis? She has a D behind her name and votes accordingly. I hope she provides good constituent service. Otherwise, this story's headline could be construed as objectionably age-ist. Who IS writer Eric Bartl and how old is HE?— October 12, 2018 8:04 p.m.
SDSU backer kicks in against rent control
What a story! Developer and landlord Fenton spends a million and a half bucks to try to sink Prop E Soccer City and a quarter million more to kill off Prop 10 Rent Control. For sure I'll be voting Yes on E for Soccer City and Yes on 10 in favor of allowing Rent Control. (I feel sad every time I drive past the huge blocky building Fenton built on India Street where the modest two-story Reader and its parking lot used to be. A perfect example that not all change is good.)— October 12, 2018 7:56 p.m.
Atkins garners horse money, DeMaio frets about gas tax repeal title
Face it, Cassander and dwbat: you are knee-jerk defenders of the most regressive tax levied in California since 1970: this onerous tax hurts poor people more than anyone else. It is outrageous to have been perpetrated by the Democrat-dominated State Legislature and the four-term Democratic governor son of a governor, Jerry Brown. That Latin-spouting show-off should be saying "mea culpa" instead of "eureka." Brown and the Democrat legislative majority relentlessly pushed this punitive gas tax increase of 12 cents per gallon that has been in place since November 2017 -- and it will increase by another 7.5 cents per gallon next July. That's almost 20 cents per gallon more when people need to fill up to go to work. In addition, there are increased annual fees for owning your car: $25 more per year for cars valued under $5000 and up to $175 more for cars worth $60,000-plus. You ignore unethical Democrat-driven ballot language that never states Prop 6 is meant to repeal the onerous gas tax. You slam Carl DeMaio who recognized an obvious opportunity to goose GOP midterm election turnout by sponsoring the Vote Yes on Prop 6/Repeal the Gas Tax. You pretend this gas tax was some environmentally-correct medicine our Governor was administering: it was his swan song boon to Labor and creation of another legislative slush fund. I remind you that Brown has refused to end fracking in California and has never permitted California oil extraction to be taxed -- something that even Texas does. And there is no explicit provision in the law that gas tax revenue will actually go to repair roads and bridges. Between 2007 and 2010, as much as $1.3 billion in transportation funds that should have been dedicated to road repairs were diverted to finance other things. I'm voting Yes on Prop 6 to get rid of the regressive gas tax that shamefully was levied on the people of California by a Democratic Governor and Legislature one year ago.— October 10, 2018 8:45 p.m.
La Jolla luxury high rise
You don't mention whether the windows open, but if they do, there will be days when the occupant rues his/her/their expensive purchase. There is often a nauseating stench from protected sea creatures living on the sand and rocks across the street. Only during the brief tenure of Mayor Bob Filner was there ever an effort made to mitigate it.— October 4, 2018 8:14 p.m.
Farewell to a professional love
Touche, Don. I like the new faces behind Soccer City and the fresh notion of a professional soccer team for San Diego -- a world sport beloved and played by so many people.— September 18, 2018 12:30 p.m.
Farewell to a professional love
In the spirit of Don Bauder's honesty in reporting and his encyclopedic historical memory of this town, thanks to you, beernsports, for noting the criminal past of perennial political consultant Tom Shepard in pushing the SDSU West "scam for developers." It is scandalous, but Shepard, like the rest of his buddies in this proposal, has a bronze face and depends upon the ignorance of the populace to skate. We are going to miss Don Bauder.— September 18, 2018 12:07 p.m.
Farewell to a professional love
Boo-hoo! This is terrible news! My hope here is a couple of stents will do the trick and save you from full retirement, Don. For the moment, let us focus on your restoring much better health and some well-deserved down-time smelling the roses and enjoying aspens turning gold. Meanwhile, limitless thanks for your tremendous contributions to this city. Hasta luego y que le vaya bien.— September 17, 2018 6:23 p.m.
No In-N-Out burgers on Dem cruise to New Orleans
Trent Seibert was like Jack Palance in "Shane,"(1953) a hired gun brought in to rid the West of farmers and their fences, making grasslands safe for cattle barons. Seibert was briefly at the U-T, but he was never of the U-T. He was always a Koch Brothers operative meant to take down Mayor Bob Filner and other Democrat rising stars -- which description, by the way, has never included Nathan Fletcher-Gonzalez, then or now. When Seibert's work was done, he left town. Fortunately, under new owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, there will be no more of that sub-rosa Koch stuff in our local paper.— September 13, 2018 9:49 p.m.
Goring the golden fleece
Though it's no surprise the San Diego County Taxpayers Association lobbies for conservative corporate interests, it is surprising to imagine a child of GafCon complaining about the way the taxpayer group operates. I always thought Gaffen generally meant goniff, most especially regarding the proposed densification and uglification of Seaport Village.— September 4, 2018 4:04 p.m.
Isn't Ben Kingsley like the male Meryl Streep?
Ben Kingsley is elegant and quiet. One of my favorite movies of all time is "Turtle Diary" with him and Glenda Jackson and a screenplay by Harold Pinter.— August 29, 2018 6:49 p.m.
