Modern Muirlands masterpiece titled in investment company controlled by founders of Luna Grill
Better stock up on the Deet in rooms of this $10 million La Jolla behemoth with disappearing doors that "effectively remove a wall, fully opening the home to the backyard pool deck."Mosquitos thrive near water, even in stratospherically-priced modern manses.— April 11, 2019 5:14 p.m.
Trump creates tariff-ying panda bear market as China recalls its products from US
Even in a satirical piece, you can't write "Trump may mean well" and not get challenged. The record shows Trump NEVER "means well."— April 8, 2019 12:14 p.m.
Wild Nights
The late Judith Moore could be depended upon to leave no stone unturned in her writing about the dark side of life. I have no doubt she would take this as high praise. I had never read this old-time-Reader long-form piece before, but I certainly recognize a lot of the names dropped.— April 3, 2019 2:25 p.m.
SDSU $575-an-hour lobbying deal revealed
What's the problem here? The letter is properly composed -- a Date, a Salutation, an inky-black Body and a Closing with a Signature. Plus disclosure of bargain rates from the lawyer-drones. Did they charge the Reader for the paper it was printed on? No. I don't see a problem here. Good you included a Pdf of the letter for all to see what a public records request gets you in San Diego. Sunshine Week is so over.— April 1, 2019 9:11 p.m.
City of San Diego wants dockless scooter secrets
There are two unanswered questions here. One, who will pull Pollyanna "swell's" head out of the sand? And two, if the Reader doesn't report the latest open-ended electronic intrusion on citizens' privacy, can we reliably expect the cops will not devise a rule to prevent its abuse? Sheesh, that concerns me.— April 1, 2019 8:56 p.m.
City of San Diego wants dockless scooter secrets
Not exactly on point, but I wouldn't mind a little intrusive surveillance of scooter-dumping that goes on across this city every day. This morning I saw a guy in an Enterprise Rentals van park at a red curb on touristic Prospect Street in La Jolla and unload a bunch of scooters onto the sidewalk between a hotel and a Starbucks. Couldn't make out which scooter company. But since when is Enterprise participating in scooter-delivery? Scooters are entirely unregulated in San Diego: they appear and disappear like locusts and are operated without enforcement of rules for motorized devices. Meanwhile pioneering but ill-fated DecoBike, which had sought and expected permissions to place ungainly docks all over town, was entirely turned down in La Jolla and severely criticized elsewhere. Reportedly DecoBike has withdrawn from the field.— March 29, 2019 10:36 p.m.

Mel Gibson cast as intolerant cop role in S. Craig Zahler’s Dragged Across Concrete
Gosh, "POS" appears in two Reader reviews in the same week and this time I get it. Elsewhere it was presented as "PoS" and I was bewildered. Anyway, Scott, I admire the way you handled Gibson's pretty good movie. Wasn't part of his problem alcohol? Maybe he's made amends. I loved "Braveheart" and that earlier one where he was a crazy white cop with Danny Glover.— March 27, 2019 7:55 p.m.
Angels in America: nigh a religious experience
This was a review of"Angels in America" at Signet Theater? And what is a "PoS?" Yawn right back at ya.— March 27, 2019 7:40 p.m.
Larry Remer and Nancy Chase – warriors in Todd Gloria campaign
Larry Remer did not overtly represent the Alan Bersin puppet candidate for school board in Y2000 who lost to school board incumbent Fran Zimmerman, despite all the out-of-town money and first-time-ever TV spots used in that race. Remer had done printing for Zimmerman's first winning campaign in 1996. But Remer also was buddies with Mel Katz and shared his admiration for Alan Bersin, whose rigged appointment to school superintendent Zimmerman refused to ratify. So the second time around, Remer's firm made money by placing expensive anti-Zimmerman TV spots which, some say, ironically assured her narrow victory.— March 27, 2019 5:03 p.m.
