Citizens for Odor Nuisance Abatement sues city
You are dead wrong, Burwell, the stench IS a relatively recent phenomenon. If you were Vladimir Putin, maybe coastal residences could be razed, including Mitt Romney's manse. But we're not there yet.— December 28, 2013 4:21 p.m.
Citizens for Odor Nuisance Abatement sues city
True. My point is that pro-active Mayor Filner's procedure worked. To continue the process, as Interim Mayor Todd Gloria and La Jolla City Council representative Sherri Lightner should, would cause the stench to continue to be abated. As I recall, the process was deemed non-toxic to sea life or the sea itself.— December 28, 2013 4:17 p.m.

You are a mind-reader, Don. I originally wrote "was driven from office" and then thought it sounded more neutral to say "left office." When it's over, it's over in politics. I have moved on and am working on needlepoint, sort of like Madame La Farge.— December 28, 2013 4:07 p.m.
San Diego's lobbyist accused of arranging illegal gifts
What a story: the symmetry is perfect. Thanks, Matt Potter. Corrupt Sacramento lobbyists secretly grease the palms of corrupt State legislators. Same corrupt lobbyists sued by whistleblower on Christmas Eve -- the best day of the year for hiding official chicanery in newspapers. Same corrupt lobbyists were fired by Mayor Bob Filner and promptly re-hired by Interim Mayor Todd Gloria. Same corrupt lobbyists connected to former GOP Gov Pete Wilson and to the disputed Douglas Manchester Navy/Broadway development here in San Diego. Thank heaven we now have "representation" in Sac and D.C. as legislative budget seasons get under way.— December 28, 2013 1:19 p.m.

"The sea always smells like a crotch..." Inelegantly stated, Psycholizard, and false. When stench mitigation is undertaken, the stench goes away. The stench is a (relatively) recent phenomenon and it can be diminished. Somebody ought to ask Mayor Filner how he managed to accomplish it.— December 27, 2013 2:04 p.m.
Ex-SEAL cops plea in CIA-linked secrecy case
An interesting comment. Former Seal Schliemann gets slapped with a misdemeanor charge for stealing "classified" government information and providing it to another private contractor trafficking in government "security" and other unauthorized recipients, while famous Booz-Allen employee Edward Snowden is called a traitor and driven into Russian exile for providing classified documents to WikiLeaks whose interest is public information.— December 27, 2013 1:58 p.m.

We assume Burwell is being funny, just like Jonathan Swift was being funny. Nobody's talking about exterminating sealife. We're talking about suing the public officials in charge for non-performance of duty. Mayor Filner typically took brisk action and the La Jolla Cove stench was mitigated. Mayor Filner left office and those stench mitigation efforts were set aside by acting Mayor Todd Gloria and City Council representative Sherri Lightner, both of whom are afraid of their own shadows and unwilling ever to push the limits of the envelope for the public good. La Jolla is/was the jewel of San Diego and a huge tourist draw, with the Cove area at its center. Restaurants, businesses, the town park and the marginal way are all negatively affected by the stench. If it takes a lawsuit to get some action from the politicians, so be it.— December 27, 2013 1:40 p.m.
Dumanis campaign guru arranging TV spots for Faulconer
"Governance by people who know what they are doing...?" That would be Mayor David Alvarez. "A million dollars worth of union support...? The GOP and its vested interests will see to it that that figure is eclipsed soon enough. GOP spending is the subject of this story, in case you didn't notice. By now San Diegans are ready for real change in this City and a fair deal for the residents. You denigrate someone who is intelligent, local, hard-working, Latino and possesses personal integrity? In this great country, that's your right. I happen to believe we would be better off with someone who personifies that description. And that would be Mayor David Alvarez.— December 23, 2013 3:25 p.m.
Dumanis campaign guru arranging TV spots for Faulconer
The machinery of the Republican Party -- and hangers-on like campaign consultant Jennifer Tierney who live off proceeds from elections -- is gearing up for a New Year blowout of television spending to influence beleaguered naive San Diego voters to elect a nice-enough white-bread Establishment candidate as mayor. This is such an important election for us: people will not be fooled by the customary limitless spending and they will vote for the best man, David Alvarez, who was born and raised here, educated here and, after getting elected to City Council in a tough race against an "insider," where he truly delivered for his constituents. Alvarez has roots here, City experience and personal integrity. He will deliver for us all -- not just the few -- as Mayor of San Diego. And there's precedent for a change in pattern. Voters in Boston elected a working-class experienced legislator Martin Walsh over a lace-curtain Harvard grad candidate for their mayor. Voters did it in New York City when they elected Mayor Bill De Blasio with his multi-racial family and common touch. San Diego voters are ready for Mayor David Alvarez.— December 23, 2013 12:51 p.m.
Wall Street freebies for Vargas staffer
Is the Reader bound by family-newspaper standards, or can you tell us exactly what is a "naked short sale?" Other than that, it is fascinating that Juan Vargas wanted to help failed mayoral candidate Nathan Fletcher so much that he actually released his D.C. chief of staff to run Fletcher's campaign here. It must have won Vargas some points (and future campaign dollars) from billionaire Fletcher godfather Irwin Jacobs -- a good investment. Aside from personal nest-feathering, I'd like to hear about what good works -- if any -- Vargas is performing for his new constituents.— December 20, 2013 3:58 p.m.
