Dean in UCSD money "laundering" case to step down
Who wrote the U-T story? We always want to give credit where it's due. Thanks for connecting the dots. I doubt that former Dean Elman will be pulling down a base salary of $300,000 when he turns back into a pumpkin, um, regular UCSD prof.— February 18, 2014 11:18 a.m.
Controversial "diversity" officer out at UCSD
Professor Greene probably didn't find enough work to keep her busy. How about diverting that big diversity salary toward some student-related purpose rather than fill the "vacancy?" After all, before the job was invented a year ago, there was no such position, no salary and no benefits. Surely some existing employee at UCSD could handle diversity celebrations and infractions.— February 14, 2014 12:19 p.m.
Pete Wilson maxes out late to Faulconer
Very true-blue and loyal to Pete Wilson, Mr. Hudson, but you really ought to ask any sentient California Latino about whether they think Wilson was racist in crafting, backing and pushing the punitive provisions of Prop 187. Are you saying it was a Mexican plot to divert attention from their own internal troubles? You must be kidding.— February 12, 2014 11:06 p.m.
Filner accuser McCormack Jackson to get $250K
I saw the grotesque granny/receptionist on TV this morning who had also claimed sexual harassment from former Mayor Filner and had been represented by Gloria Allred. She was incensed not to have gotten a financial cut like McCormick's and said so. Apparently her court-ordered reparation is a letter of apology.— February 11, 2014 4:40 p.m.
Filner accuser McCormack Jackson to get $250K
Laplayaheritage, this is the first time I have read that Ms. McCormick Jackson tried to prevent homeless advocates from speaking with Mayor Filner at his monthly Saturday open meetings. The truth slowly slowly reveals itself, thanks to your remarkable courage and persistence. I thank you for all you do.— February 11, 2014 4:34 p.m.
Filner accuser McCormack Jackson to get $250K
Let's memorialize that the "three people" were ex- City Councilwoman Donna Frye and lawyers Marco Gonzalez and Cory Briggs. Unforgettable and unforgiveable.— February 11, 2014 4:25 p.m.
Philip Seymour Hoffman: one more loss
Let's talk about addiction and death. How about legalizing recreational marijuana? Will it be good for kids?— February 7, 2014 6:17 p.m.
Democrat Aguirre endorses Republican Faulconer
Honest Gov, where i live has its own runaway development and "infill", plus lousy roads, dark street lights, crumbling curbs and heaving sidewalks. But I hear you: Barrio Logan is unrecognizable for all the shocking gentrification. I honestly don't know about Alvarez's position on all this -- but it sounds to me more like Kevin Faulconer and Todd Gloria's cup of tea. You may be right, but for the moment I am supporting David Alvarez and hoping he will be elected Mayor next Tuesday.— February 7, 2014 6:12 p.m.
San Diego's Sacramento lobbyist to admit illegal gifting
When you come down to it, maybe Mayor Bob Filner was the best thing since sliced bread after all -- give or take. In contrast to the raves that Interim Mayor Todd Gloria has been getting from some quarters and the self-adulation he's been indulging in lately, it seems Gloria is responsible for NOT REINSTATING a City fee schedule for conventioneers' private use of public streets -- direct benefit to Kevin Faulconer's wife and her business -- and for REINSTATING a corrupt lobbyist in Sac and D.C. who has compromised some of our prominent politicians.— February 7, 2014 5:10 p.m.
Democrat Aguirre endorses Republican Faulconer
Visduh, haven't you said you don't even live in San Diego? You are dead-wrong in your assessment of David Alvarez as someone who will indiscriminately "take care" of labor interests in a political quid pro quo just because Labor contributed to his mayoral campaign. Running for public office these days requires more money than ordinary people can provide, and principled candidates are grateful to their contributors but not beholden. David Alvarez is that kind of principled man. David was born, raised, educated and now is settled here with his own family. He is intelligent, thoughtful, well-spoken, and experienced on City Council. He is in this race to serve the needs of regular people in the neighborhoods where they live. That would be all of us who have been ignored for years by a system that's geared to the interests of downtown movers and shakers. We need a mayor like David Alvarez who has the capacity to rebalance the resources of this city to serve its residents in many communities. Kevin Faulconer is a decent-enough man, but he is inextricably tied to the development, banking and Chamber of Commerce regulars who have controlled San Diego for half a century or more. They have called the shots, enjoyed the status quo and profited handsomely from it. Even Faulconer's wife benefits from the way business is done at City Hall, as reported in the Reader this week by Matt Potter. Enough already. It's past time for a change.— February 5, 2014 1:21 p.m.
