Shocker: San Diego Opera to fold
Ian Campbell is a master of spectacular opera. Using Campbell's familiar accented voice on radio ads or in robo-calls to subscribers to promote Opera performances always struck me as a brilliant strategy. If your memory is as bad as you claim, you will not miss the San Diego Opera when it's gone.— March 20, 2014 4:15 p.m.
Shocker: San Diego Opera to fold
I am shocked and stunned. Given the depth of the bench of rich people in this town, it seems to me they would ante-up to sustain and grow this absolutely first-rate, truly world-class organization. The San Diego Opera is just concluding a spectacular season. I saw the production of Verdi's "Masked Ball" on Sunday with an international roster of sublime singers and Italian music director, a full orchestra and chorus and ballet dancers. I was looking forward to 2015 and planning for it with my regular companions, some of whom were children. Opera is expensive. But when it is done masterfully, as Ian Campbell always does it, it is unlike any other theatrical experience. Surely this decision can be reversed.— March 19, 2014 4:05 p.m.
The Falconer: Part 1
I know an eleven-year-old girl who flew a falcon at a friend's birthday celebration. It must have been this woman's bird. The kid was impressed.— March 19, 2014 3:49 p.m.
Relieve itchy skin with olive oil and/or vinegar
See suggestions in a comment after Eve's column on Detergents for Sensitive Skin from 5/15/2012. Also, scratching itchy skin is a no-no: it just fuels the fire.— March 19, 2014 1 p.m.
Detergent for Sensitive Skin
In laundry soaps eliminate all fragrances and never ever use fabric softeners. Rinse clothes and bedding and towels twice. Wear cotton duds. Avoid scalding baths, hot tubs or showers. Lotion up often with unscented anything, even vaseline which has rapid-healing properties. Avoid exotica in anything you put on your skin -- like mango, papaya or guava -- simplicity is the watchword. Stay out of the sun and find a hypoallergenic sunscreen. See a dermatologist and get a written list of do's and don'ts.— March 19, 2014 12:54 p.m.
War is a junket

Todd Gloria ordered to round up e-messages
I am sorry to read this interpretation of the judge's order, but I am not surprised. Todd Gloria is as slippery as they come and at this moment is likely deleting incriminating text messages and voicemails from his personal devices. Not only this, but Gloria will go on to hold a seat in Congress when his old boss Rep. Susan Davis steps down. It's depressing, but it is business as usual in SeaWorld San Diego.— March 19, 2014 12:10 p.m.
Lindbergh Field drug smugglers busted
FatCat, nobody's hating anybody, honest. Now Burwell is riffing on the original and it is even funnier. Maybe you can call Donna Frye and have her get everybody to resign -- or at least cease and desist.— March 18, 2014 8:32 p.m.
As new fee imposed, university exec gets a raise
No, ImJustABill, the "Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame" is not a joke. It's yet another corporate world application coming out of the corporate world's favorite institution, Harvard University, and being applied to such disparate endeavors as Government and Education. As the nation's pre-eminent university, Harvard should be ashamed to promote such hogwash, but it is always in high fund-raising gear and so benefits from private corporate largesse. See the recent New York Times story about privatized funding of scientific research.— March 18, 2014 12:25 p.m.
Lindbergh Field drug smugglers busted
I'm sorry, FatCat, but Captain's calling these guys a "Latrine-o gang" is funny. If the shoe fits.... Also, let's avoid Delta Airlines.— March 18, 2014 12:09 p.m.
