Opera: Campbells could get up to $3 million more
Nice. Threats to feed the Opera Director to a Tasmanian Wolf or to beat him up in a dark alley. Keep it classy, John.— April 8, 2014 5:57 p.m.
Toni Atkins pulls Community Benefit District legislation
Soon-to-be-Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins should be apologizing, not crafting double-talk. We were not born yesterday. "Exploring a concept" does not mean introducing legislation. And since when do "respected members of the community" get such carte blanche? I'll tell you when: when they give money to your campaign war chest.— April 7, 2014 12:40 p.m.
Judge rules Barrio Logan referendum should be on the ballot
Jan Goldsmith was a tool of downtown business interests long before he became City Attorney. In this case CA Goldsmith took a different tack -- not "tact' -- and refused to defend the integrity of Barrio Logan's community plan to protect its people's health and welfare against misrepresentation by heavy industry polluters such as NASSCO on the harbor side of Barrio Logan. Now, thanks to Judge Trapp's terrible decision, the taxpayers will have to sustain an expensive special election, founded on industry lies and brought forward by those commercial heavyweights who intend to overturn a community's right to plan for its own health and well-being. Will the people of San Diego recognize the importance of this vote to their own communities' autonomy? Will the electorate vote to support the people of Barrio Logan? The very fact that it is a special election means there will be low voter turnout. And the big guns will maintain their lying claims, publicized by their big bucks, that this is about "saving jobs." It's a pity Judge Trapp just couldn't find a way to shut down this travesty of justice.— April 5, 2014 3:47 p.m.
U.S. Customs corruption is chronic, audit says
Oh, say it isn't so: Customs and Border Protection officers purposely letting people into the US of A who are undocumented? For a consideration of some sort? Well, at least the officers aren't shooting folks willy-nilly like recently, when they killed a lone crosser in east county who had been lobbing rocks at them.— April 4, 2014 1:23 p.m.
UCSD’s god of debauchery
Also, you should have used a photo of the Nikki Sainte-Phalle "Sun God" sculpture. It's beautiful.— April 3, 2014 10:17 p.m.
UCSD’s god of debauchery
I guess they are waiting to be sued when some kid doesn't make it back alive from the "on-campus de-tox center" before they get serious about monitoring alcohol bingeing on UCSD premises. How much was the contract for that out-of-state consultant?— April 3, 2014 5:11 p.m.
The real reason Zimmerman got the SDPD chief gig?
Has anyone else noticed the striking resemblance between San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman and San Diego Schools Superintendent Cindy Marten? And the similar ways each was appointed to her job? I'm just saying....— April 3, 2014 2:17 p.m.
Opera board still looking for donors
I understand the use of such comparisons as a gauge for compensation in the world of business, but there is much to be said for an unusually gifted artist's intrinsic worth. You will say the Opera IS a business, and I understand that too, but Ian Campbell delivered a perfect artistic product, the equal of anything I have ever seen in New York. It is the San Diego Opera Board that failed in its job to keep the magic happening.— April 1, 2014 9:07 p.m.
Atkins pushes bill so 30% of your neighbors can redevelop you
What kind of Democrats do we grow here? State Senator Tony Atkins is the 2014 honoree at the San Diego County Democratic Party's now-infamous annual spring dinner. Last year the official main attraction was new Dem convert Nathan Fletcher -- not first Democrat-in-eons Mayor Bob Filner whose snubbing there prefigured an official termination later in the summer. Anyway, Atkins' partner in life Jennifer LeSar is big in the business of public-private housing partnerships even while Atkins continues to carry legislative water for "redevelopment." She's done it for years, always slipping past this clear conflict of interest. But she's reached a new low as author of this blatant attempt to diminish the 50% participation rule to grease the skids for tidy creation of "community development districts."— April 1, 2014 8:51 p.m.
Opera board still looking for donors
Watered down beer indeed: I would not go to hear opera singers standing in front of two pianos in a recital and neither would most people who have paid to see and hear the San Diego Opera in all its glory. Less is NOT more. And also, singers DO sing for a living, and that's why they'll be paid according to their contractual obligations.— April 1, 2014 2:05 p.m.
