Manchester's Grand Del Mar approved by commission
Well, there's no subterfuge here, no need to read between the lines. The Planning Commission voted 5-0 -- unanimously among those voting -- to "allow additional improvements after the fact" to U-T owner Manchester's Del Mar resort. No permits, no fines, no nothing. Thank you, Tim Golba, Planning Commission chairman, recently appointed by Mayor Faulconer who was himself so generously supported by Manchester.— October 3, 2014 6:27 p.m.
Extra killer drones not justified
Page One of the LA Times today (10/3/14) tells about soaring stock prices for SoCal weapons manufacturers Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics and Raytheon since August when we began the move to bomb ISIS in Iraq and Syria. Pentagon reporter W.J. Hennigan says targets often include US-made Humvees and MRAPs that have fallen into Islamist hands. way. Plus we are numero uno in weapons sales to other nations in the world, many of whom are being enlisted in the anti-ISIS coalition. So, time to dump those tax-free municipal bonds: if you're a military/industrial investor, you can win big every which way.— October 3, 2014 1:46 p.m.
Kensington Video is closing!
OK, Scott, I went to see "Tracks" and it is very good. I wouldn't want the kids to follow in our heroine's footsteps -- a little too counterculture, don't you know -- but Mia W. is estimable-if-whacked and those variegated Australians are amazing. Camels good, dog excellent, boyfriend believable. Nice recommendation for best picture of the year. Meanwhile I am holding overdue DVDs of "Duck Soup" and "The Kid" from Kensington Video -- also meant for the kids. And what will happen to kids who are just learning about movies when that wonderful store closes? There should be a Hong Kong-sized demonstration against all tech "disruptions" that are ruining the fun.— October 2, 2014 3:22 p.m.
Extra killer drones not justified
Maybe they can peddle those spare drones to San Diego public schools -- more versatile than giant armored vehicles. GA chief Linden Blue's girlfriend/fiancee/wife (?) former USN Admiral Ronne Froman used to work for Alan Bersin at San Diego Unified. She also headed the USS Midway Museum for awhile and then became a honcho at the Monarch School for homeless children. That's three educational institutions and three drones minimum right there. Only 43 to go.— October 2, 2014 2:52 p.m.
Nothing stank with Balboa Park Celebration, Inc.
What a cover-up. Julie Dubick owes the taxpayers a lot of money that she personally squandered on wining and dining around town as chair of that group. In earlier days she used to claim she believed in "giving back" to the community: well, this is her chance. I guess we shouldn't hold our breath.— October 1, 2014 9:34 p.m.
Gone fishin'
Is this the same thing as the Fish Report but without a fish illustration? (We really liked botanical drawings and close-up photos of fish.)— September 29, 2014 2:13 p.m.
Kensington Video is closing!
"Obscure" taste is not how I would describe it, Scott. But never mind. I will say that I know a family with children ages 12 and under who went to Mission Valley yesterday to see the 75th anniversary version of "Gone with the Wind,"even though the kids had already seen it at Granny's on a VCR. American History! Great dresses! Pseudo-feminist heroine! Quaint racist characterization and casting! Soaring music! Macho bad-boy hero! Sexy inferences (one scene now called rape!) Programmed intermission! How does "Tracks" compare?— September 29, 2014 1:01 p.m.
Kensington Video is closing!
You need parking and interior store space and people who have encyclopedic knowledge of movies and a willingness to work late and be nice to customers and keep their eyes on the ball -- so definitely NOT a "hybrid multi-function operation." Those people sitting in the lobby at Digital Gym and chatting with their friends -- oh, and selling and taking your ticket -- already seem to have their plates full. Let's just say they are not qualified for this task. What's going to happen to the inventory at Kensington Video? They went to so much trouble to reorganize and update everything in the shop. Je suis desole, as the French say -- desole with an accent on the final "e."Trust me, it's more than just being sorry.— September 26, 2014 10:22 p.m.
Kensington Video is closing!
Love hurts.— September 26, 2014 4:25 p.m.
Faulconer chooses scandal-linked lobbyist
Way too convoluted to follow, but I'm sure the deal will benefit Mayor Faulconer and very-involved-lobbyist Darius Anderson. Let's just say Anderson is different from but not better than Jerry Sanders' and Todd Gloria's man Sloat. Both seem willing to work across the aisle in an admirably bi-partisan manner.— September 26, 2014 4:16 p.m.
