None worse than Detroit
Do they factor ethnicities and crime rates into this calculation, or are those topics politically incorrect? It is devastating to think about the socio-economic differences among people living in places so different from one another as Sioux Falls, S.D./ Overland Park, KS and Detroit, MI. Also, that three California cities make the Poorest List should be a wakeup call for self-congratulatory Governor Jerry Brown and our Democratic Legislature who need to overhaul public education instead of dreaming about bullet trains. There are clouds on the horizon of this Golden State.— December 8, 2014 12:45 p.m.
Black hole development in Little Italy
It is upsetting to see the slimy trio of LiMandri, Gloria and Faulconer digging up Reader ground. Let's just see how many "affordable" units actually get built, what the true rents are and who gets to live in them. A black hole indeed.— December 6, 2014 9:08 p.m.
Attorney Mike Aguirre sues CityBeat for libel
Jerry Sanders, faker and a fraudster, has not gone away. City pension problems have not gone away. Aguirre, in a lull between legal proceedings against utility giants and the corrupt CPUC, needs to reassure himself that HE hasn't gone away, so he sues snarky struggling CityBeat. It's overkill.— December 6, 2014 11:31 a.m.
Attorney Mike Aguirre sues CityBeat for libel
Aguirre should be used to bad press by now. Since we're speaking of education, he is well-enough educated to let a CityBeat slur (albeit based on Aguirre's own words from when? 2005? wasn't that the pre-Columbian era?) pass without further publicity for that slim wannabe journal. Christmas is a slow season for adrenalin highs -- more of a time for quiet reflection on the past, lost love and the relentless passage of time. Mikey is overcompensating with this lawsuit.— December 5, 2014 11:19 p.m.
To Cuba, for haute cuisine
The only things "haute" about such sponsored tours to Cuba are the price tag and the hype. All American tourist exchange is subject to the shifting politics of U.S.-Cuban relations, and it is not surprising that this one has been cancelled abruptly as the situation of detainee Alan Gross makes headlines here this week. Many American institutions have been cashing in on the allure of Cuba's Pearl of the Antilles' time-warp -- UCSD joins Harvard, Santa Fe Museum of International Folk Art, many others -- and they all unabashedly include politically incorrect visits to Ernest Hemingway's animal-trophy-filled casa grande and the formerly-Mafia-owned Hotel Nacional along with more intellectual fare. All tourist movement is closely "guided,"no visit lasts longer than a week, but it is still an undeniably interesting, if expensive, experience. The Hotel Parque Central is one of few places in Havana where anyone, including Cubans, can (pay to) get online. Beyond the vista of the hotel pool portrayed in the photograph is a once-exquisite colonial capitol city in near-ruin, jammed with profoundly poor proud people many of whom, thanks to Fidel, are literate, multi-lingual and reasonably healthy because of national health care.— December 4, 2014 1:53 p.m.
Demos’ dough
Actually, I think Gonzalez's legislative proposal is for double-time for people who work Thanksgiving and Christmas. Still a great idea.— December 3, 2014 9:51 p.m.
Far above the raging hoi polloi...
Good to know that tall and dignified former County head-Dem Jess (not Jesse) Durfee favors less booze in the Q's city boxes, but how did an ex-County superintendent of schools got named chairman of the Stadium Advisory board? Was it height? In any event, it's clear that other tall, once-mighty friends of Demon Rum at the Q have been turned: Jack McGrory now supports the controversially-named but dry La Jolla Christmas Parade, scheduled for next Sunday.— December 1, 2014 2:55 p.m.
Poop deck
I recommend a back-flow valve to prevent recurrence of city sewage flooding a low-lying private residence. Over time, a back-flow valve can get stuck, so make sure it is accessible for repair and not bricked-over. Otherwise, based on past personal experience, it seems like the price is fair, and the councilman properly recused himself from the vote. As a straight-shooter and politician, I'm sure he appreciates the publicity.— November 29, 2014 1:15 p.m.
Pool for poor panned in U-T San Diego
I agree with Reader Hudson that the facts of this piece are not reflected in the headline. Snarky is one thing, but misleading is another. Can't this recent trend can be stopped by the Authorities?— November 29, 2014 12:49 p.m.
Demos’ dough
The last thing good thing a Dem did for the (working) poor was State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez's recent proposed legislation for time and a half pay for workers who are enlisted to work early and late over national holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. She surprised us with this one, and we thank her for it. Otherwise, it's bi-partisan business as usual.— November 27, 2014 12:22 p.m.
