Charity begins at home for Solana Beach councilman
Another misleading Reader headline! Hey, Solana Beach is just the preamble. This story is really about San Diego being put on the block for exploitation by so-called "non-profits" -- especially by its "non-profit" news entities KPBS and Innewsource.org, both being run out of San Diego State University and underwritten by major special interests with personal gain or political axes to grind. Sometimes the funders are kept secret and sometimes the "news" stories enhance their funders' agendas -- which are never about creating a more equitable and just democratic society, no matter what the SDSU PR lady says.— February 25, 2015 5:59 p.m.
Hired guns to the rich and famous
"While some of our hired Armed Body Guards have graduated from high schools…" But did they take the California High School Exit Exam? If not, what on earth would one have to talk about with them?— February 25, 2015 5:43 p.m.
Oscar recap
Oh, unlike the Academy Awards, some movies this year were really terrific -- as was Cher in "Silkwood" which may have been what she got recognized for. "Birdman" was super-arty interesting; "Inherent Vice" was funny touching CA in the '70's; "Night Crawler" was creepy business-model noir; and "Boyhood" was just plain life-affirming. "Whiplash" was unforgettably about a sadistic music teacher and a driven sucker of a kid. These movies were totally worth seeing.— February 24, 2015 4:37 p.m.
Oscar recap
Scott, thank you for mentioning not mentioning suicide as an afterthought in Academy Awards acceptance speeches. How about an Oscar ceremony moratorium on lip service to serious subjects such as black lives mattering, the scourge of Alzheimer's, Lou Gehrig's disease, cruel mistreatment of gay geniuses, equal pay for equal work and fraternity with Mexicans who prefer the USA to their corrupt homeland. Did I miss anything? Glitterati on celebrity high horses give me cognitive dissonance.— February 24, 2015 10:29 a.m.
Sempra among "most admired" companies?
Good story, Dave Rice, and interesting comment, Captn D, about the utility we love to hate. Recently even 10-year-old online journal Voice of San Diego -- which frequently runs ads from SDGE on its website -- tiptoed up to the precipice of telling the full story of SDG&E's Ensenada, Mexico, land grab. But then VOSD shrank back and just told about the Mexican national who contributed illegally to the political campaigns of District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and former Mayor Bob Filner. When he retired from running the AFL-CIO Labor Council, outspoken Jerry Butkiewicz took a job at SDG&E and was never heard from again. Probably he was one of those who found it a wonderful place.— February 23, 2015 10:01 p.m.
Tale of two sleazes
Loved this hilarious story. No wonder Carson is a possible future home to three National Football League teams! Te absolvo, sharp-tongued Jason Roe: you are small-potatoes-conflicted compared to the former public servants of Carson, CA. And how come San Diego can't get a guy on our bench like U.S. district judge Percy Anderson who sentences an errant former City Council aide with words to live by: "You might as well have taken a gun down to City Hall and stuck it in their ear?"— February 23, 2015 2:13 p.m.
San Diego Opera hints at collaboration with famed comic-book character
Hey, I have tickets to "Nixon in China." I'm hoping it's as good as really-new opera "Moby Dick" was a few years ago. (But you can tell the Ian Campbell crackerjack operation has left town; the San Diego Opera Saviors box office royally fouled up our ticket order.)— February 21, 2015 2:27 p.m.
Peters listed among the politically endangered
Moderate Democrat Scott Peters DOES do well by all his constituents in the 52nd District which is pretty affluent, neither here (Dem) nor there (Rep) and thus not doctrinaire. You can call it "swing" and I won't argue. Obviously "it's all about winning" and that is about hard work. Peters is intelligent, experienced, committed to making a community contribution through politics, independently wealthy and the best Congressional representative the 52nd has seen in decades. By my count that makes him mostly quality and much less about money -- a pretty good ratio for this gilded age.— February 21, 2015 2:06 p.m.
Chargers departure could hit U-T where it hurts
A dizzying array of fantastic possibilities here -- Chargers teaming up with !Raiders! to build a stadium in some god-forsaken area of LA County! Speculation about GOP Big Daddy Doug Manchester selling the daily paper to Malin "Gumby" Burnham in cahoots with Voice of San Diego angel and KPBS newsroom donor Big Dog Dem Irwin Jacobs! A miraculous resurrection of serial affiliator Rep/Ind/Dem Nathan Fletcher among other lights of the local Democratic Party at a big political fundraiser being run by Irwin Jacobs! Jacobs, by the way, is thought to have found jobs for Fletcher at both Qualcomm and "teaching" at UCSD. Pretty heady stuff, marvelous and enjoyable. Reader readers are grateful.— February 20, 2015 10:29 p.m.
Marijuana is a gateway drug — to sports betting!
Really? Are you sure drugs are not as "costly as gambling?" The social cost of legalizing these vices is huge. This is a great article, Patrick, shedding light where there was ignorance.— February 18, 2015 10:25 p.m.
