One hat picture, none of Caitlyn
Great photograph, nice story. Thank you for not giving Caitlin Jenner more ink than she has already enjoyed this week.— July 17, 2015 11:09 a.m.
Folks, your Ponzi scheme will always surface
We just can't let it happen, Alex, and it's not a laughing matter. My worry is that working people and those living on pensions and social security may be threatened by their moderate Democratic "protectors" as well as by rabid conservatives. Remember Bill Clinton who de-regulated banking (a direct cause of the 2007 Great Recession) and who enacted NAFTA (which has permanently disappeared solid American jobs.) "Business-model" ideation, notions of "disruption" and a "sharing economy" have infected every aspect of our society and are branded as hip and positive, when in fact they carry far-reaching negative consequences for every American who is not part of the wealthiest 1%.— July 17, 2015 11 a.m.
UCSD flunks sex crime disclosure 101
Oh please, Chancellor Napolitano, can't I just pay higher fees and tuition at UCSD right away next fall so that you can hire some people who will timely file the reports required for giving the public an accurate picture of campus crime -- drug abuse, sexual assault and burglary? It's hard to know what's really going on at school, and my mom keeps asking me questions I can't answer about the "student climate." Not that I would tell her, but still....— July 17, 2015 12:24 a.m.
Fabiani’s Cabrera money love
Nothing partisan about my comment, maddog. Those bobblehead yes-nodding Council members from both political parties are spineless sellouts. This City has tremendous infrastructure deficits, no planning director, no regular street-cleaning and recently shamefully reneged on a partnership to finance bus passes for 1000 poor high school students! It is criminal to spend unallocated funds for an EIR at the Qualcomm Stadium, even if it is ultimately to serve "future development...at the site." We've got no water. Let's fix what's broke and worry later about which Establishment Friend gets to build a One Paseo in the middle of Mission Valley. First things first.— July 17, 2015 12:08 a.m.
San Diego Metro transit reluctant to give bus passes to inner-city students
A terrible and depressing story. School Superintendent Cindy Marten and her School Board should be raising public hell about this with Metropolitan Transit District officials, Mayor Kevin Faulconer and City Council -- which just managed to squander $2.1 million of unallocated public money on Charger Stadium studies. Marten styles herself as a special advocate for poor kids of color. But maybe the San Diego Unified School District is just as happy not to have to chip in for this program for 1000 poor high school kids. You wouldn't want them to learn how to get around town on their own.— July 16, 2015 11:49 a.m.
UCSD's costly ad switch: Chargers to Trolley
That's probably why they've been granting out-of-state students financial aid.— July 15, 2015 5:03 p.m.
Fabiani’s Cabrera money love
Fabiani's paltry $50-grand pales in comparison to the $2.1 million-plus that our (tunnel-vision) City Council majority approved 6-3 yesterday for (compliant) "consultants" to provide us a (quickie) EIR on the feasibility of upgrading Qualcomm Stadium's in time for a special election (more money) to keep the Chargers football team in San Diego. It's just sad. We can thank Dems Marti Emerald, David Alvarez and Todd Gloria for voting No, and we can turn our backs on DINOs Sherri Lightner and Myrtle Cole who approved the expense along with the phalanx of Council Republicans.— July 15, 2015 4:58 p.m.
$500,000 terminal art backstory
As I recall, Jimsair's nifty rooftop public bar was spitting distance from Lindbergh Field runways and was closed down after 9/11 at least one afternoon/evening for undisclosed security reasons. Not too long afterward, the watering hole was permanently shuttered and the building was razed. I am surprised the new park going into that location again will allow close observation of arriving and departing aircraft. In these hyper-secure times, I can't think of another major city that allows such old-fashioned unrestricted scrutiny of "approaching and departing" airplane traffic. Aviation buffs will be happy.— July 15, 2015 4:37 p.m.
UCSD's costly ad switch: Chargers to Trolley
Aside from what this shift may portend for the Chargers, to whom the University of Caiifornia San Diego Medical School (that's really who we're talking about when we say "Health Sciences") has paid out a lot of money for ridiculous promotion of its name, it seems another fortune will go to confuse riders on the San Diego trolley. "Old Town UC San Diego Health Campus South?" Are they kidding? The dwindling downtown hospital presence of UCSD is miles away from that stop, over on Front St. in far Hillcrest. And what does that mean, anyway, "All funding from UC San Diego is from non-state sources?" Private donors? Just doesn't seem right.— July 14, 2015 8:26 p.m.
Can Ché stay?
Great that you are covering this small valiant effort to retain one aspect of UCSD's once- collaborative and communal past. Note the low affordable cost of Che Cafe performances and that they are alcohol-free and for all ages. Let's hope Pradeep Khosla recognizes value when it is in front of him.— July 13, 2015 7:11 p.m.
