San Diego Gas & Electric rates are nation's highest
We need government to step in and regulate! The private sector has failed here! This is what happens with capitalism! Oh wait...— April 30, 2013 9:28 a.m.
Tech grads: job search will worsen dramatically if immigration bill passes
The last sentence is telling. "No matter how you slice it, you're likely to face more competition" If the only way you can get a certain salary is by limiting competition, then you're overpaid. It's bizarre that the US handles immigration the exact opposite of most of the rest of the world. If you're educated and want to work and pay taxes and support yourself, we don't want you! If you're poor, illiterate, unskilled, and will be living a life of dependency and government assistance, come on in, we'll make room! Absolute insanity.— April 19, 2013 9:45 a.m.
710 Beach Club in Pacific Beach irks neighbors with sidewalk cafe
“The problem is simple; I have a nightclub in a commercial zone. I was given an entertainment permit 25 years ago to, well, to make noise and to entertain. It’s a problem that will never go away: I am a businessman, and they live near an entertainment district.” Yup. I could have some sympathy for people who lived there before the clubs and bars and restaurants. But, even for them, they lived near an area zoned for those things. Any of these people who have been complaining for 20 years are free to sell. Or, rent their place out... they could make a killing during the summer. "No, no, that isn't what we want at all... we want to stay here in the beach community, but we want it the way we want it!" Well, too bad.— April 19, 2013 9:39 a.m.
710 Beach Club in Pacific Beach irks neighbors with sidewalk cafe
"Out of service" means unable to take another call, not feet up and relaxing ;-)— April 19, 2013 9:36 a.m.
In P.B. the hotter you are the easier it is not to care
I really enjoyed this tale, too. Thanks for writing.— April 19, 2013 9:34 a.m.
In P.B. the hotter you are the easier it is not to care
Gotta agree... a male who "maneuvered himself on top of" a semi-conscious woman and proceeded to get it on would be pilloried. Nobody would rest until he was hunted down, locked in a cage for years, and branded with his scarlet A.— April 19, 2013 9:33 a.m.
Has fear of crime kept you from visiting Mexico?
Most of the people getting killed in Mexico are Mexican nationals mixed up in the drug trade. The Americans who wind up victims of violent crime down there are A) looking for trouble, like prostitution or drugs; or B) doing something insanely stupid like camping by themselves in an expensive RV on a remote beach. If you go to Mexico and stay in the "tourist" areas, stay aware of your surroundings, don't get drunk, don't do stupid things, and don't look for trouble; you'll be fine. I would absolutely go if that was on the agenda. I could drive to La Fonda right now, or at 11PM, and have no problems. Even on the free road, but the toll road is a much better choice for so many reasons.— April 19, 2013 9:06 a.m.
Exalta Farms
Anyone who can afford $30 million for a house can buy land and custom-build what they want. It can't be easy to sell a property like this... there's a very tiny market of very discriminating buyers. I doubt they'll get very close to their asking price any time soon. But I will wish them luck before the inevitable posts start... "That's outrageous, that much money could feed X number of starving kids in Africa or homeless people, nobody should ever be able to have a house like that, let's seize it and redistribute the wealth fairly!"— April 19, 2013 9:01 a.m.
Graffiti grief in Serra Mesa addressed by SDPD detective
Painting walls just leaves a blank slate for the next "artist" who comes along. There is a way to combat graffiti. It would involve adding up all of the cost of it, hitting the "artist" with a felony for the dollar amount, and sending them a bill. If the "artist" is a minor, send the parents the bill. But that "wouldn't be fair", right? They're "non-violent", so they won't see more than maybe a few days in jail. They're "low-income", so it would be "pointless" and "heartless" to send them a bill for $10,000 So what's the actual penalty? We get the society we deserve, not the one we wish for. Accepting and excusing anti-social acts means we get more anti-social acts.— April 19, 2013 8:57 a.m.
Who profits from movie theater ticket sales
A movie theater is a candy store you go to to watch movies. If they had to depend on movie revenue, they'd go broke. Just think of the cost of leasing and maintaining that huge building, the electric bill, the salaries of the dozens of people who work there. I've been going to Cinepolis and can't see going to a "regular" theater any more. It's like first class vs. coach.— April 10, 2013 10:07 a.m.
