Former public utilities president's home searched
But... but... government regulation was supposed to fix everything! Oh, wait, I know... we just didn't have enough of it. If we'd only raise taxes, spend more, bring on more bureaucrats, hire more unionized employees with lifetime sinecures, THEN we'd start to see some positive results. Got it.— February 3, 2015 11:09 a.m.
Case dismissal, my eye!
"The prosecutor has voiced concern in the past that Barton might be able to bail out, even with high bail." The purpose of bail is supposed to be to ensure appearance, not to ensure that the defendant is kept locked up. Right now, he's innocent. Nothing has been proven. It's a travesty for the system to say, "Well, we think he might be able to make this bail amount, so we need it to be higher."— February 3, 2015 10:53 a.m.
Gas-price bloat
There are franchises for name-brand gas stations where the wholesale price they pay is higher than the retail price at corporate-owned stations from the same brand. But the good news is, there's no such thing as "cheap gas" (read: not inexpensive in price, but cheap in quality). The only difference between the cheapest and most expensive gas, besides location, might be a couple of minor additives. Any gas sold at any real gas station is going to be fine for any car. So drive past the Shells and Chevros and head to the goofy station that looks like it's in Iraq or Venezuela. Oh, another difference is the stations like AM/PM that doesn't accept credit cards. It costs 1 or 2% to have CC transactions processed. A station that doesn't handle credit cards at all can be a nickle less than the guy across the street.— January 10, 2015 1:14 p.m.
Get in line, Chargers
There isn't going to be a stadium there. I firmly believe Kroenke has other plans for that land. I think he's working with the NFL... trying to create a "threat" of the Chargers or some other team leaving to try to frighten taxpayers and politicians into passing a huge public subsidy in that area. And at the same time, he can hold out the "promise" of an NFL team to lA... if they'll play ball. If we all call his bluff, the Chargers will stay in San Diego, the taxpayers' money will stay in their pocket, and that land will be developed by Kroenke or sold to someone else to develop amidst cries of a "lost opportunity". The "required" public "investment" for a new NFL stadium has simply grown too large. Even sports-crazy LA isn't signing up. Neither will San Diego. And I think the same thing will happen next time New York or some other town full of rabid sports fans winds up with a stadium that's "too old, too tired, too behind-the-times" and a team making ominous remarks about looking elsewheres... the numbers have grown too big, and I think the days of taxpayers anteing up are drawing to a close.— January 9, 2015 11:53 a.m.
New social media app blows up among teens
It's amazing how easy it has to paralyze our society. A few misspelled on Twitter or a quick scrawl on the side of a plane, and we call come to a screeching halt.— January 9, 2015 11:43 a.m.
Kennedy assassin to remain in San Diego
We let murderers go all... the... time. Why extra-special punishment for someone who murders a politician? If I had my way, all murderers would be locked up for life with no possibility of parole. But I'm sick of some people being "special", and somehow an attack against them is worse than an attack against anyone else. If Sirhan Sirhan had killed nearly anyone else, he'd have been released decades ago.— January 9, 2015 11:41 a.m.
"Pull over" interpreted as "speed up"
I would love for someone to explain to me why this character shouldn't be in prison for life.— January 9, 2015 11:34 a.m.
Life on minimum wage at City Heights Burger King – for family of six
What, exactly, is "hard work" worth? One guy could spend days digging a ditch. That's pretty darn hard work! Or we could use a bulldozer and get it done in an hour. So why, exactly, should we pay the "hard worker" $15 an hour or whatever for dozens of hours instead of $100 for one hour? It's the result of your labor that has monetary worth. Not you, and not your effort. What do you produce? Hamburgers and cups of coffee just do not generate enough revenue to pay you a comfortable living. If you want to do well, you need to learn how to do something valuable. And on top of much better pay, you'll have some pride instead of a hand held out, as well as a job that's enjoyable and challenging instead of plodding drudgery. Lots of community colleges, ROP, continuing ed, etc. out there for free or cheap or heavily subsidized. Get cracking today for a better life tomorrow.— December 24, 2014 7:24 p.m.
Life on minimum wage at City Heights Burger King – for family of six
Not making enough? Quit. Go get another job that will pay you what you're worth. Wait, what's that? Nobody will pay you more? Clearly, it's a conspiracy to hold you down! Don't listen to racists telling you to get an education or job training! You just keep on drinking and using drugs and getting piercings and paying for iGadgets and cable bills, and above all, don't you dare stop having kids! The world owes you a living, and by God there's a union that will help you to get it! You deserve to enjoy your life. Greedy, selfish employers just need to pay you more. What a terrible country this is!— December 24, 2014 7:18 p.m.
Everyday meth snorter at age 13
Nobody should get nine chances. Three strikes, three crimes against property or persons, and you're DONE... life with no possibility of parole. I do not understand those who say, "Oh, yeah, he keeps attacking people and raping and robbing and stealing, but let's be nice and give him a small sentence and yet another 'chance' and let him out to attack and rape and rob again!"— November 17, 2014 10:22 a.m.
