To All U Kids Out There in Grown Up Clothing
>>i had a small comic strip for a while about my dog Handsome... Wild, my first comic strips were about my dog, too! I still have a few around here that my mom salvaged from the garbage after I moved from home to CA --- I think I stole most of the setups from Peanuts/Snoopy comics, but you can never go wrong with a cartoon dog....... >>u have long gorgeous hair Thanks - I'm hoping it'll be the same color as yours soon! While hibernating out east last winter, I almost got my first haircut since 1977. But then I realized the hair was the only thing keeping my ears from freezing off ---

To All U Kids Out There in Grown Up Clothing
That's the problem with having a home office - I never get to "go home." Work IS home! I'm strictly Bristol board and Strathmore, rather than watercolor - but I'll share my crayons 'n' acrylics! I got bunches --

To All U Kids Out There in Grown Up Clothing
Wow, how'd Owl City get into my office to shoot that video?! Right down to my keyboard 'n' toys (note also my Twilight Zone collection...)

I surely must qualify as one of those "Kids Out There in Grown Up Clothing" - my job description literally includes the phrase "plays with crayons" --- Great vids, thanks for posting, and "magical weekend" backatcha!

What's YOUR Favorite Twilight Zone?
Indeed! Just today, local Azul Azucar Sextet bassist Grant Clarkson sent me a link to a short film he made with his original music set to TZ footage, and subtitled with nothing but the writings of Frederich Nietzsche. A sample at

Kick-Ass
Nick Cage just can't stay away from comic book movies! The man with the million dollar comic collection was once cast to revive Superman for the movies, but a decade of delays found him instead donning the Ghost Rider's flaming helmet of mediocrity --- Kick-Ass would be much better if he had been the main character, tho the focus on teen (and pre-teen) heroics would have to be back-burnered to do so. As it stands, this is more entry-level stuff akin to Zoom Academy - could've been a great Disney or Nick show, but hard for an adult to justify paying good $$$ to sit thru in a theater ----

Wake Up, Speak Up
My, quite a lively thread! RE 244: I'm no lawyer (tho I played one one TV...), but it's my understanding that a meeting which is open to the public can be filmed and broadcast/posted without needing releases signed, so long as the content isn't manipulated to constitute slander or libel (ie adding voiceover, editing quotes out of context, etc). Most news outlets would probably seek releases (and pixate/obscure faces of folks who don't sign), but that's more a suggested fail-safe than a legal requirement. For stringers - who are essentially (and arguably) freelance journalists - getting release signatures wouldn't be a bad idea, but I doubt that'd be a requirement, unless that stringer been problematic with video content before -- RE 248: I believe some stringers CAN later revise the content they've posted - same as Reader bloggers can - but all 'pends their access to the administration panels and their understanding of how to work such actions within the system. RE 254: I have no idea if the stringer and the other referenced screen name are the same person. It's possible for website operators to formulate a good guess via source ISP and (possibly) registration info, but I no longer work that side of the website - as I recall, you need separate email addys to create separate Reader accounts (tho I'm not positive about that), so most people determined to hide any connection between various screen names can easily do so - Even a matching ISP is no proof that two commentators are indeed the same person. For instance, most all Reader staffers' accounts will show the same ISP, even tho we may live and work miles apart, due to the way we're logged into the system ---
— April 23, 2010 1:35 a.m.
None
Adapting a comic book to the screen can be a dicey proposition - one that fails far more often succeeds. For every Men in Black or Iron Man, there are a hundred Mystery Men, Captain Americas, Hulks, Leagues of Extraordinary Gentlemen, From Hells, MirrorMasks, etc etc -- Ghost World succeeds in part because it captures what the comic book was expressing, but using the language of motion pictures to do so. The subtle character nuances and interaction, details in the clothing and settings that would have been all but impossible to render in ink, and most of all the performances, which evoke just about every emotion that anyone who ever imagined themselves an outsider, out of step with the rest of humanity, has ever felt. And hasn't pretty much everybody, at some time in their lives, imagined themselves to be just such an outsider??
— April 22, 2010 7:21 a.m.
What's the poorest you've ever been?
Much as I like ALL those suggestions, I'm actually leaning toward "Rip Van BooBerry" ----
— April 20, 2010 10:25 p.m.
What's the poorest you've ever been?
See, that's what still bugs me - howcum nobody tried to give me a shake before having the driver notify paramedics to meet us at the next stop?! I must have looked as poor as I actually was.... That wasn't even the only time I've been mistaken for dead - I sometimes sign comic books I've created to sell on eBay, and a buyer once posted negative feedback against me, claiming "JAS died before this comic was published, so he couldn't have signed it." I actually had prove to eBay that I was still alive to have the feedback removed.

The readers of the Reader Movie Reviews deserve better
This seems more a letter to the editor than a blog --- Duncan's reviews have graced the Reader for over a quarter century - I doubt many other critics have maintained a weekly column in the same publication for so many years. Even if you find yourself frequently disagreeing with his assessments, it would be impossible to find anyone else in this city more qualified and recognized as the consummate film critic. That said, you can always post your OWN movie reviews on the Reader site! Just search up a title from the movie mainpage, and writeup your take - you can debate what Duncan has already written about the flick, or startup your own review from scratch. The Reader has two food critics - one for cheap "lowbrow" eats, and another for the more foofoo eateries. Perhaps someday the Reader will hire a "citizen reviewer" for movies too, to counterbalance Duncan's often weighty writeups. But, for that to happen, the right citizen needs to start posting some great reviews to this website....

But then I realized the hair was the only thing keeping my ears from freezing off ---— April 24, 2010 10:06 a.m.

That's the problem with having a home office - I never get to "go home." Work IS home! I'm strictly Bristol board and Strathmore, rather than watercolor - but I'll share my crayons 'n' acrylics! I got bunches -- http://inlinethumb31.webshots.com/11294/292154245… http://inlinethumb35.webshots.com/43362/209558752…— April 23, 2010 5:44 p.m.
To All U Kids Out There in Grown Up Clothing
Wow, how'd Owl City get into my office to shoot that video?! Right down to my keyboard 'n' toys (note also my Twilight Zone collection...) http://inlinethumb41.webshots.com/22248/211284776… http://inlinethumb14.webshots.com/33997/221232643… http://inlinethumb24.webshots.com/20055/286586114… I surely must qualify as one of those "Kids Out There in Grown Up Clothing" - my job description literally includes the phrase "plays with crayons" --- Great vids, thanks for posting, and "magical weekend" backatcha!— April 23, 2010 5:06 p.m.
A sample at http://www.filmbaby.com/films/3380— April 23, 2010 11:43 a.m.
As it stands, this is more entry-level stuff akin to Zoom Academy - could've been a great Disney or Nick show, but hard for an adult to justify paying good $$$ to sit thru in a theater ----— April 23, 2010 3:28 a.m.
For instance, most all Reader staffers' accounts will show the same ISP, even tho we may live and work miles apart, due to the way we're logged into the system ---— April 23, 2010 1:35 a.m.
And hasn't pretty much everybody, at some time in their lives, imagined themselves to be just such an outsider??— April 22, 2010 7:21 a.m.
What's the poorest you've ever been?
Much as I like ALL those suggestions, I'm actually leaning toward "Rip Van BooBerry" ----— April 20, 2010 10:25 p.m.
What's the poorest you've ever been?
See, that's what still bugs me - howcum nobody tried to give me a shake before having the driver notify paramedics to meet us at the next stop?! I must have looked as poor as I actually was.... That wasn't even the only time I've been mistaken for dead - I sometimes sign comic books I've created to sell on eBay, and a buyer once posted negative feedback against me, claiming "JAS died before this comic was published, so he couldn't have signed it." I actually had prove to eBay that I was still alive to have the feedback removed.— April 20, 2010 8:06 p.m.
But, for that to happen, the right citizen needs to start posting some great reviews to this website....— April 20, 2010 7:29 p.m.
