Apartment "Manager"
In my high school (in rural CT), the Rush fans were the cool kids, not geeks! Nan, those ladies you saw at my place were probably sneaking OUT, not in! Since you asked, here's my photo essay from Comic-Con - <A href="

I've had no trouble with loading live hyperlinks into blog text - if the first link above comes out "live" in this comment, it's 'cause I html coded --

Apartment "Manager"
Hey, how did us Comic Book Guys end up in this mix??? Creepy landlords seem to turn up frequently in OB. The first place I rented there on Abbott Street was a house split into three rental units, with the landlord - who looked just like the guy who played King Tut on the old Batman show (speaking of comic guys) - living in the front unit. I was looking for a place just for me, and he asked me if I dated a lot, and if a lot of girls would be coming around. I figured he didn't want a lot of people coming and going - but he seemed disappointed when I said no! He rented the place to me anyway. When I picked up the keys that weekend, I was with a young woman, and the first thing he said to her was "Wow, I hope we see YOU around here a lot!" I think I only spent about six months there - I don't think my young lady friend visited me there very often ---

Kinky Friedman
Opening act Mojo Nixon actually stumped for Friedman when he was running for political office - if memory serves, Mojo's briefly announced retirement from the music biz ended when he began performing again at Friedman fundraisers --- I'm hoping they play together on "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Any More (they don't turn the other cheek, like they done before...)"

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
I'm puzzled as to why Mr. Shepherd considers the world-seen-thru-a-childlike-mind antics of Pee Wee's Big Adventure worthy of four stars, but this Halloween flipside earns no more than a bullet --- the Series of Unfortunate Events are not that dissimilar to Pee Wee's dark roadtrip dealings with the Alamo, violent biker bars, enraged spouses, and even a ghostly trucker named Large Marge, whose haggard visage and revelatory/celebratory name would be perfectly at home in the Snicket universe. The Lemony DVD includes an inventive and amusing commentary by Jim Carrey, remaining in character as the book's original author - as the movie unspools its Tim Burton-esque tale, he grows increasingly distressed and horrified at what the filmmakers have done to his story -----

Clash of the Titans
Regarding the 1981 original, I've never disagreed with Mr. Shepherd more, and that includes his inexplicable five star rating for Hitchcock's "The Birds" (which I still think was him pranking on us, seeing as how that's Hitch's worst movie, with his worst female lead, the perpetually wooden Tippi Hedren) -- the original Clash not only marked some of the best stop-motion animation from the legendary Harryhausen studio, but it ranks among the best epic fantasy stories ever told, in any medium (having come from one of the oldest and most exciting myths crafted by man) --- However, his take on the "remake" seems quite accurate - FYI, it's adapted from a recent comic book series published by Bluewater Productions, which was crafted more as a sequel than a remake. Sadly, the new movie eschews most of the progressive rethink in favor of revisiting ground already perfectly covered almost 30 years ago, CGI and 3D gimmickry be dammed ---

great blogs to read
Staff blogs went wacky for awhile too, hence Rock Around the Town's (temporary) vanishing act - all being fixed. Doggone 'puters. To quote Emily Litella from SNL, if it isn't one thing, it's another....

Apartment "Manager"
In my high school (in rural CT), the Rush fans were the cool kids, not geeks! Nan, those ladies you saw at my place were probably sneaking OUT, not in! Since you asked, here's my photo essay from Comic-Con - <A href="http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/autobiograp…">http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/autobiograp…</A> http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/autobiograp… I've had no trouble with loading live hyperlinks into blog text - if the first link above comes out "live" in this comment, it's 'cause I html coded --— August 3, 2010 6:04 p.m.
When I picked up the keys that weekend, I was with a young woman, and the first thing he said to her was "Wow, I hope we see YOU around here a lot!" I think I only spent about six months there - I don't think my young lady friend visited me there very often ---— August 2, 2010 8:39 p.m.

Kinky Friedman
Opening act Mojo Nixon actually stumped for Friedman when he was running for political office - if memory serves, Mojo's briefly announced retirement from the music biz ended when he began performing again at Friedman fundraisers --- I'm hoping they play together on "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Any More (they don't turn the other cheek, like they done before...)"— July 28, 2010 6:18 p.m.
The Lemony DVD includes an inventive and amusing commentary by Jim Carrey, remaining in character as the book's original author - as the movie unspools its Tim Burton-esque tale, he grows increasingly distressed and horrified at what the filmmakers have done to his story -----— July 27, 2010 1:23 p.m.

Sadly, the new movie eschews most of the progressive rethink in favor of revisiting ground already perfectly covered almost 30 years ago, CGI and 3D gimmickry be dammed ---— July 20, 2010 1 p.m.

great blogs to read
Staff blogs went wacky for awhile too, hence Rock Around the Town's (temporary) vanishing act - all being fixed. Doggone 'puters. To quote Emily Litella from SNL, if it isn't one thing, it's another....— July 17, 2010 5:45 p.m.
