A "bullet," Mr. Shepherd?! For one of the first Hollywood movies ever to tell a story from the perspective of America's first socially-aware and ethically-active teen generation? Not to mention one of the first U.S. movies to incorporate a European style of quick-cut surrealistic editing (and we all know how much you love foreign films)?? Believe it or not, I just this weekend saw the Graduate for the first time. Wow, Dustin Hoffman got off to an amazing start in his career! There are some amazing scenes of him, like in the beginning when he's rushing thru the old fogey party -- the camera is so close on him, looking like he'll suffocate from claustrophobia with all the "plastic" friends of his parents working the room, closing in around and even grabbing at him. And then that final shot of him and his new wife on the bus, both looking in opposite directions, at first all happy and breathless from the wedding and catching the bus, and then the smiles gradually fade and they just look more and more confused, as if "What the f*ck is supposed to happen NOW...." Just great stuff! I didn't even know Buck Henry wrote it (I sher loved his stuff in the early SNLs, and of course Get Smart, among his many other projects). Not sher how and why I've never caught such a Hollywood classic - maybe cuz I never thought much of that pretentious whispery sleep-inducing Simon and Garfunkel music.

Back on the street after six months in the San Diego County Jail
Okay, I'll share my one and only jail story - around 1979, I was arrested in the Sports Arena parking lot before a Yes concert, on suspicion of possessing illegal mushrooms, which an undercover PO heard me talking about (the "plant material" they found on me was actually peyote). After being taken into the downtown lockup, another inmate decided he wanted my bunk and bashed my head against the rails by way of telling me so --- With my head bleeding profusely, I asked a guard if I could see a doctor and get bandaged - he sneered and said I needed to fill out an inmate request form. I asked for the form - after about an hour, he brought me one. But no pencil to fill it out. So I asked for a pencil - this made the guard laugh. "We don't give potential weapons to inmates. After another hour or so - still bleeding - they finally took me thru the booking procedure. I pocketed a small nub pencil, took it back to the holding cell, and filled out the inmate request to see a doctor. When I next saw a guard (quite awhile later), I called him over and gave him the form. When he found out that I filled out the form in the holding cell, he asked how I got the pencil. I truthfully told him. I was promptly arrested for "theft of property" and booked all over again ---- I spent around four days in the downtown jail before release on "OR" (own recognance). The drug charges were never pressed (probably because the arrest report saying "mushrooms" was clearly wrong, and the peyote had probably turned to mush in the plastic bag over the weekend). However, I DID have to go to court on the pencil theft charge, for which I did six months probation - my only "criminal record." It took a loooong time before I could tell that story with a smile ----

The Pill for Men, Human Cannonball
Ha, classic, calling someone "ignorant" while misspelling it "ignoarant" - and the comment field even has its own spellcheck redline, yet the commentator STILL couldn't spell it! That said, tho, MattAlice replying about birth control, and then tossing in "where would the rapper community be" DID kinda come outta left field. Were you just testing us to see who was paying attention, Mr. Alice??

Short Story Jam - You're Invited To Join In!
"Then again," Linda thought to herself, "does ANYbody really KNOW Stanley?" Of the two brothers, Mitch had always been the steady, dependable one (even if one of the things he was dependable about was acting lecherous around women). Stanley, however --- he'd always been a cipher, a mystery, even to the one who should have known him best, his own brother. And Lord knows Stanley didn't have much more than a clue about dating women. Or talking to them. Or looking at them directly in the eye, for that matter. Linda knew this from VERY personal experience.

Letters
Ward, the Reader posted a notice about Thomas getting hit by the train within 24 hours of the incident, including info about online efforts to raise money to help with his hospital bills --- the notice was posted in the daily Blurt breaking news section "This Just In," which appears on the Reader mainpage every day, as well as on the music homepage. As far as I know, only one other local website reported the news sooner (
www.sddialedin.com
). Aside from reporting it on the Reader mainpage, you'll also see a full length Blurt article about the incident in this very issue --- being a weekly paper, it's hard for Blurt to always carry the most timely reports. Hence the "This Just In" daily website reports!

Short Story Jam - You're Invited To Join In!
It came as no small surprise to those in Stanley's intimate circle (if "intimate" can be said to encompass only acquaintances and co-workers) when he began to rhapsodize about his newfound passion for astronomy. This was, after all, a guy who once described a trip to the local planetarium (no doubt attended alone) as "pinpoints for pinpricks."

The Crazy On The Corner: La Mesa
The only reason each of us lives and breathes is by the grace of the dead - their triumphs and tragedies inform all we see, all we say, and all we do. And so someday our own deaths will seed some future endeavor or thought --- ie it matters what we do and how we comport ourselves, whether we know anybody is looking, whether we worry if anyone cares, and whether or not someone ever thanks or curses us for simply being who we are and doing what we do ----

Not sher how and why I've never caught such a Hollywood classic - maybe cuz I never thought much of that pretentious whispery sleep-inducing Simon and Garfunkel music.— September 6, 2010 8:12 p.m.
However, I DID have to go to court on the pencil theft charge, for which I did six months probation - my only "criminal record." It took a loooong time before I could tell that story with a smile ----— September 6, 2010 6:41 p.m.
Alice??— September 5, 2010 6:55 p.m.

Linda knew this from VERY personal experience.— September 1, 2010 9:28 p.m.
As far as I know, only one other local website reported the news sooner (www.sddialedin.com). Aside from reporting it on the Reader mainpage, you'll also see a full length Blurt article about the incident in this very issue --- being a weekly paper, it's hard for Blurt to always carry the most timely reports. Hence the "This Just In" daily website reports!— September 1, 2010 3 p.m.

It came as no small surprise to those in Stanley's intimate circle (if "intimate" can be said to encompass only acquaintances and co-workers) when he began to rhapsodize about his newfound passion for astronomy. This was, after all, a guy who once described a trip to the local planetarium (no doubt attended alone) as "pinpoints for pinpricks."— August 31, 2010 7:42 a.m.

The Crazy On The Corner: La Mesa
The only reason each of us lives and breathes is by the grace of the dead - their triumphs and tragedies inform all we see, all we say, and all we do. And so someday our own deaths will seed some future endeavor or thought --- ie it matters what we do and how we comport ourselves, whether we know anybody is looking, whether we worry if anyone cares, and whether or not someone ever thanks or curses us for simply being who we are and doing what we do ----— August 21, 2010 9:44 a.m.
