Reinventing Nautical Disaster
Breakups rarely bring pleasant memories - but please don't let your clearly-stated bitterness cause you to mistake mere reporting for "causin' trouble." Just because you get some ink, doesn't mean you own the page -- I had to poke around a bit for the update info RE Ben Jerman, while the Furlonger info had already been entered in the Reader's Local Music Database, else I would have posted the updates closer together. Presently, the entries on the Daffodils, Nautical Disaster, Little Fowl AND Heart Beat Trail have all been updated with the most current info at hand.

It's all just part of our ongoing efforts to provide the most encyclopedic -- and unbiased -- local music resource on the web. Nobody's playing favorites, at least on the Reader's end - "facts is facts," after all. Best of luck with the new endeavor!

Reinventing Nautical Disaster
Former Daffodils singer/guitarist Ben Jerman spent the next three post-breakup years playing guitar and writing dozens of songs in his North Park home, delving into twangy Americana sounds with a hint of Kinks-inspired rock. In 2009, with guitarist Alex Jones and bassist Bianca Batti (both of Monsters from Mars), he cofounded the group Little Fowl. John Commune, singer and guitarist for the John Foothills Band, joined on drums, and Andrew Geldmeier, former guitarist for the Apes of Wrath [now known as New Mexico], played organ.

Reinventing Nautical Disaster
It's a newspaper, guys, not a fan club newsletter - nothing wrong with letting the paper's readers know what the other Daffodil/Nautical native is up to.

Rock 'N' Roll Comics: The Inside Story of a Local Publishing Empire
I was interviewed about Rock 'N' Roll Comics yesterday on Philadelphia's classic rock station WMMR, mainly promoting our Pink Floyd and Led Zep graphic novel compilations with Bluewater, but also talking about RevCom founder Todd Loren, the "Unauthorized and Proud of It" documentary film, etc --

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
I recommend NOT reading the comic book version before seeing the cinematic translation of League, which is a rare take on my part. Being in the comic biz myself, it's usually a thrill to see Hollywood doing PR for my comic book contemporaries, sending movie patrons in search of the graphic novel source material for the many contemporary comic-based flicks, like Kick Ass, Men in Black, Watchmen, V For Vendetta, Scott Pilgrim, Jonah Hex, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, From Hell, Daredevil, Ghost World, Mystery Men, Batman/Superman/Hulk/etc. etc. etc. But the movie version of League is SUCH a different approach from the comics, right down to which characters are included, that it really stands on its own as a separate (and, in some ways, superior) entity ---

Reinventing Nautical Disaster
Former Nautical Disaster/Daffodils bassist Jaye Furlonger - now married and known as Jaye MacAskill - currently plays in the comedic rock band Pony Death Ride, alongside hubby Joe MacAskill. Their Reader page includes an MP3 for their song "I Think My Boyfriend's Gay for Morrissey."

Mr. Shepherd’s second sentence runs 111 words --- in a capsule review that contains only three sentences (plus a brief credit roll). And yet I frankly can’t find much to add – however, I’d give Shellhead2 dual stars rather than one, mainly on the strength of the performances, which transcend the odds by holding their own against the utterly massive layers of visual FX. Mickey Rourke follows up his Award-driven Wrestler role with an attention to detail that went as far as choosing the designs for his full-body prison tattoos and even creating a hitherto unscripted film role for an avian Cockatoo sidekick (which itself steals a scene or three). Downey as Iron Man inventor Tony Stark refuses to be sunk by his character’s many, many flaws, essaying his performance with an air of “My work will redeem my lousy personality” that recalls his virtuoso performance in his earlier Charlie Chaplin bio flick. Cheadle handles his reluctant/replacement hero role with aplomb, appropriating one of the Iron Man suits in the name of some “greater good,” which of course proves to instead be an even greater evil (operating within the machinations of the military industrial War Machine). The unfortunately-named Pepper Potts, as played by Gwyneth Paltrow, holds her own against Downey as her boss-slash-love interest, matching and even usurping his boxing-style banter in all their scenes together. Samuel L. Jackson is clearly just warming up his role as former soldier-turned-super-spy Nick Fury, agent of SHIELD, a character surely destined to appear in virtually all the future Marvel Comics films being set up in Iron Man 2 (news footage from the Hulk movie appears on one of Tony Stark’s lab monitors, a busted Captain America shield is used as a construction prop, the mysterious appearance of Thor’s hammer takes one character offscreen until the final post-credits roll, a map in the SHIELD office indicates the Black Panther’s activities being tracked in Africa….). And Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow rocks that leather jumpsuit (her stunts being done mostly on wires, rather than CGI generated as insinuated by Mr. Shepherd, tho a stunt double does indeed handle a few seconds of the more ambidextrous maneuvers). Whoops, I guess I DID find something to add ----

San Diego Housing Commission to Overhaul Hotel Sandford
Yay, two hotels that WON'T be handed over to wealthy numbnuts to convert into fancy "boutique" hotels that nobody patronizes. Downtown needs affordable housing, so kudos for instituting safety revisions, withOUT displacing the people who live there.

Presently, the entries on the Daffodils, Nautical Disaster, Little Fowl AND Heart Beat Trail have all been updated with the most current info at hand. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/daffodils/ http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/nautical-disa… http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/little-fowl/ http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/heart-beat-tr… It's all just part of our ongoing efforts to provide the most encyclopedic -- and unbiased -- local music resource on the web. Nobody's playing favorites, at least on the Reader's end - "facts is facts," after all. Best of luck with the new endeavor!— November 14, 2010 5:30 p.m.
John Commune, singer and guitarist for the John Foothills Band, joined on drums, and Andrew Geldmeier, former guitarist for the Apes of Wrath [now known as New Mexico], played organ.— November 14, 2010 1:35 p.m.
Reinventing Nautical Disaster
It's a newspaper, guys, not a fan club newsletter - nothing wrong with letting the paper's readers know what the other Daffodil/Nautical native is up to.— November 14, 2010 1:14 p.m.
Rock 'N' Roll Comics: The Inside Story of a Local Publishing Empire
I was interviewed about Rock 'N' Roll Comics yesterday on Philadelphia's classic rock station WMMR, mainly promoting our Pink Floyd and Led Zep graphic novel compilations with Bluewater, but also talking about RevCom founder Todd Loren, the "Unauthorized and Proud of It" documentary film, etc -- http://www.wmmr.com/shows/weekends/blogentry.aspx…— November 13, 2010 12:22 p.m.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
I recommend NOT reading the comic book version before seeing the cinematic translation of League, which is a rare take on my part. Being in the comic biz myself, it's usually a thrill to see Hollywood doing PR for my comic book contemporaries, sending movie patrons in search of the graphic novel source material for the many contemporary comic-based flicks, like Kick Ass, Men in Black, Watchmen, V For Vendetta, Scott Pilgrim, Jonah Hex, Iron Man, Ghost Rider, From Hell, Daredevil, Ghost World, Mystery Men, Batman/Superman/Hulk/etc. etc. etc. But the movie version of League is SUCH a different approach from the comics, right down to which characters are included, that it really stands on its own as a separate (and, in some ways, superior) entity ---— November 13, 2010 10:58 a.m.
Reinventing Nautical Disaster
Former Nautical Disaster/Daffodils bassist Jaye Furlonger - now married and known as Jaye MacAskill - currently plays in the comedic rock band Pony Death Ride, alongside hubby Joe MacAskill. Their Reader page includes an MP3 for their song "I Think My Boyfriend's Gay for Morrissey." http://www.sandiegoreader.com/bands/pony-death-ri…— November 10, 2010 1:25 p.m.

Whoops, I guess I DID find something to add ----— November 9, 2010 10:59 p.m.

San Diego Housing Commission to Overhaul Hotel Sandford
Yay, two hotels that WON'T be handed over to wealthy numbnuts to convert into fancy "boutique" hotels that nobody patronizes. Downtown needs affordable housing, so kudos for instituting safety revisions, withOUT displacing the people who live there.— November 2, 2010 10:24 p.m.
