The folks behind high-traffic sites like Internet Movie Database and Rotten Tomatoes might argue with your disdain for user generated movie reviews, given their millions of website visitors who enjoy what their peers write about the movies. For my part, having been a Reader staff writer & cartoonist for over 15 years now (including countless reviews of albums, movies, TV shows, concerts, clubs, rehearsal studios, etc.), I hope most readers find at least some merit within my occasional comment posts. I endeavor to remark on points NOT covered by Mr. Shepherd or previous posts, and I always enjoy it when further commentary arrives from other likeminded cinemaniacs --- if you don’t find this read-worthy, then why not just skip ‘em, instead of peeing in our pool --

That's a shame, if Cruise fans can only accept him in certain roles, when he's clearly capable of far more - for instance the scene just after his drunken breakdown, when he finds himself literally lying in the gutter, as Cruz suddenly appears and, smiling gently, helps him to his feet. His face is awash at first with renewed rage, then confusion, then disbelief ("can this possibly be real?") and then, gradually, almost reluctantly, he slides into acceptance and, eventually, abject relief and exhaustion. You can see all traces of fear, anger, and doubts dropping away as he clings to her arm like a drowning man to a lifesaver ---- I thought the soundtrack was fabulous too, in the way certain songs were deliberately playing a direct role in the disjointed and fluid memories Cruise was trying to make sense of. Unexpected but utterly perfect choices, like the Monkees' trippy "Porpoise Song" suddenly swelling in the midst of a violent/erotic/hallucinogenic/WTF IS it interlude....

I've never understood the hostility toward this movie. For movies rooted in both lucid and unconscious dream therapy, it's FAR better than What Dreams May Come, the Matrix trilogy, Total Recall, Brainstorm, and the like. I'm particularly fond of how classic record album covers are subtly recreated in various shots throughout the film, some very subtle indeed, like Cruise and Cruz walking arm in arm in a shot straight off a Bob Dylan record. A second viewing is almost demanded, as the final twists continue provoke thought long after the movie wraps up. In this, it's akin to flicks like Memento, Donnie Darko, Videodrome, and the Sixth Sense --- it gets under your skin and keeps you tossing around bits and pieces of it in your brain, ironically/appropriately just as you're trying to get to sleep that night -----

Antiques Roadshow
Needs to Appraise the Appraisers
There have been countless articles written about Antiques Roadshow, many offering detailed "behind the scenes" insight into the program production. However, this article is about Mr. Dimock and several attending San Diegans, documenting their personal experiences, observations, and insights from the other side of the curtain.

Antiques Roadshow
Needs to Appraise the Appraisers
Wow, a boxing belt signed by Ali for a buck!!!! Awesome! The article's cover photo should be explained -- the woman with rug was part of the San Diego 2010 taping. She's holding an asmalyk rug from Turkmenistan, circa 1900. The Turkoman nomads wove asmalyks for both utilitarian and ceremonial purposes, and examples from this time period are extremely rare. Rescued from a dumpster, the rug was valued by an ARS volunteer at $125,000 to $150,000. Other San Diego 2010 high ticket items included a 1907 portrait of one guest's aristocratic grandmother, painted by Ashcan School artist Robert Henri -- valued at $250,000 to $350,000. Also, an original Hortus Eystettensis book, a groundbreaking collection of oversize botanical illustrations published in 1613 -- valued at $250,000 to $300,000.

Antiques Roadshow
Needs to Appraise the Appraisers
It's getting harder to find treasures in trash, ironically in part because Antiques Roadshow's successful formula has educated so many people about memorabilia markets and auctions. ARS's own popularity is making it difficult to find unraided attics, basements, thrift stores, and yard sales --

Silva Futures
San Diego should welcome Mr. Silva's return - now if only we could get Marc Berman back in the local promotion game, maybe the AEG/Live Nation monopolies will no longer tie up all our local concert venues with corporate duct tape --- Referencing "AEG’s Sports Arena" is a somewhat inaccurate oversimplification - while AEG does have "first rights to the 12,000-seat venue," it should be noted that the company became a majority - not sole - owner of the Arena in 2008. AEG's investment in the building included Arena upgrades like LCD TV screens, flat screens, and redoing the entrances and the outer concourse with new paint and lighting. In addition, the eight rows of lower level riser seats were replaced with 2,200 state-of-the-art seats, and a small nightclub was opened on the premises. General Manager of the Sports Arena Ernie Hahn, who began at the facility as an event coordinator in June 1991, has told the Reader “We’re an open building. So, whether it’s Live Nation or AEG or anyone else, all shows are not only welcome but encouraged here.” Seeing as how Mr. Silva has a long and rich history at the Arena and with Mr. Hahn's family dating back to the '70s, the Arena door SHOULD be open for Silva to at least table some Bill Silva Presents events at the Sports....er, the Valley View Casino Center.

Reverend Stickman: Nearly Beloved
Outtakes: ANY FEARS OR PHOBIAS? “I have a fear of heights, but only if I’m falling.” MOST VISITED WEBSITES? 1. “Chordie.org is a great resource for guitar tabs and lyrics.” 2. “On YouTube, you can find how-to videos on just about everything.” 3. “eBay, because I would rather get a bargain than pay full price, and I can get exactly what I want.” WHAT WOULD YOUR GRADE SCHOOL TEACHER SAY ABOUT YOU? “He was a good student who would finish his work early, and then disrupt the class with mischievous behavior.” SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE? “Ray Charles, Hit the Road Jack: ‘And don’t you come back no more, no more.’”

I've been trying to decipher Viewer's comments too -- there may be a second-language issue, or perhaps we're being pranked.

Shepherd or previous posts, and I always enjoy it when further commentary arrives from other likeminded cinemaniacs --- if you don’t find this read-worthy, then why not just skip ‘em, instead of peeing in our pool --— January 28, 2011 9:35 a.m.

Unexpected but utterly perfect choices, like the Monkees' trippy "Porpoise Song" suddenly swelling in the midst of a violent/erotic/hallucinogenic/WTF IS it interlude....— January 27, 2011 1:48 a.m.

In this, it's akin to flicks like Memento, Donnie Darko, Videodrome, and the Sixth Sense --- it gets under your skin and keeps you tossing around bits and pieces of it in your brain, ironically/appropriately just as you're trying to get to sleep that night -----— January 26, 2011 12:59 a.m.
Antiques Roadshow Needs to Appraise the Appraisers
There have been countless articles written about Antiques Roadshow, many offering detailed "behind the scenes" insight into the program production. However, this article is about Mr. Dimock and several attending San Diegans, documenting their personal experiences, observations, and insights from the other side of the curtain.— January 23, 2011 4:42 p.m.
Antiques Roadshow Needs to Appraise the Appraisers
Also, an original Hortus Eystettensis book, a groundbreaking collection of oversize botanical illustrations published in 1613 -- valued at $250,000 to $300,000.— January 20, 2011 4:27 p.m.
Antiques Roadshow Needs to Appraise the Appraisers
It's getting harder to find treasures in trash, ironically in part because Antiques Roadshow's successful formula has educated so many people about memorabilia markets and auctions. ARS's own popularity is making it difficult to find unraided attics, basements, thrift stores, and yard sales --— January 19, 2011 8:11 p.m.
Hahn's family dating back to the '70s, the Arena door SHOULD be open for Silva to at least table some Bill Silva Presents events at the Sports....er, the Valley View Casino Center.— January 19, 2011 3:35 p.m.
