Red Pony Clock: First-Generation Mexican-Americans
Outtakes: FAMILY MEMBER YOU MOST TAKE AFTER? Gabe: “Got the spicy Latin temper from my Dad.” Melina: “I got my awkwardness and good skin from Dad. Everything else, I got from Mom.” Normandie: “My Grandma. I can’t run errands without a huge glass of iced tea, and I watch birds all the time.” WHO MAKES OUT IN YOUR WILL? Gabe: “I gotta leave Melina all my stuff, not just because she’s my wife, but ‘cause I owe her money.” Gerry: “My PlayStation 3 goes to Gabe, even though he swears he doesn’t want it.” Melina: “All my stuff is going back where it came from; the thrift store.” ANY FEARS OR PHOBIAS? Gabe: “My brain dying before my heart does.” Gerry: “I don’t like silence. It weirds me out.” Melina: “Being ripped to shreds.” Dave: “Salmonella.” Samantha: “That I’ll get trapped in or knocked over by a revolving door.” Normandie: “I’m very afraid that I’ll be the target of a serial killer.”

War at War
War was just nominated for the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Currently, Jerry Goldstein is being sued for $50 million by Sly Stone, who claims Goldstein talked him into selling his song rights to Michael Jackson for far below their value, resulting in Stone currently being homeless and living in a van. The current War lineup includes Tijuana native Saladro Rodriguez.

ACE Parking, SDPD and my Nightmare from Hell
The blog writer apparently caught this parking attendant on a grouchy day, but Nan makes a good point about the license plate NOT being an indication of who was driving. I worked for Ace some 20-odd years ago, and even then there were sensors counting every vehicle that entered and left. Any unpaid vehicles came out of the attendant's pay (the full plus-penalty amount), so perhaps this particular employee had already been burned and didn't want to lose more pay. Yeah, Ace's policies can be tough, on patrons who screw up (which this blogger did) and on their own employees. But there's not shortage of either to keep the company far in the black. Whether Ace has an unfair monopoly in San Diego is unrelated to what this blogger is saying. As for their relationship with the local police, why shouldn't they (police AND Ace) enforce the law? You pay for a service rendered, or you're in a bit of trouble. You should expect to be asked for full identification, and possibly expect to see a cop if you don't comply. Also, a parking lot is not a public street, it's private property. The owner of that property installed Ace to run the lot (unless Ace owns the lot, which is more rare but not unlikely). The lack of "probable cause" cited in the comments RE police wanting identifying documents doesn't apply. If you wanted to drive off a gas station lot without paying for the tank of gas you just pumped, and you only offered the station employee a glimpse of your plate and a "promise" to return, would you expect the gas station people to wave you away instead of calling the cops, to at least confirm who you are? Probably not --

Record-Release Roundup
Jamuel Saxon's Pre-Madonna album remains unreleased. "It’s waiting on a cloud for the right label to pick it up, instead of blowing our proverbial load on a local release,” says Milgaten. The No Rules, Just Noice EP (“its load is entirely for blowing”) will include a club version of the Vision of a Dying World’s “Awoken By a Scene From the End Times,” a Cuckoo Chaos cover, a remix of “Landmines + Chandeliers” by Lee Schneider (aka Groundfloor), a new six-minute track called “Ancestor,” and a sequel to their earlier song “Deon Sanders Pt. 3” called’ “Deon Sanders Pt. 4.” The Tall Ships (featuring former Dryve drummer Keith Andrews) will reissue their sophomore album On Tariffs and Discovery in a vinyl edition (300 copies, 180 gram white wax), with a record release show at the Soda Bar on October 22.

Grease Punk
Outtakes: LOCAL WHO DESERVES FAME AND/OR FORTUNE? “Nena Anderson [Musician Interviews 8-31-11] is a dear friend, and her new CD is spellbinding. Excellent songs, solid performances, and great atmosphere.” FIRST PET? “Brandy, a black and white sheepdog, when I was probably five. Little f*cker ran away.” PSYCHICS: REAL OR FAKE? “Depends on the psychic. I do believe people have this ability. It’s just that some are more in tune with it than others. Some of them are just shysters. Funny enough, my grandfather used to call me a Scheisse, which means ‘little sh*t’ in German.”

San Diego's he-man Jerry Schad – the rougher it gets, the better he likes it
Jerry was a class act in every sense of the word, and he's already sorely missed. At least he got to read the mountain of encouraging comments and "thank yous" posted on the Reader site after his farewell column was published. It's not often we get a chance to say "goodbye" to someone, and to tell them how much we admire both the person and his many wonderful works. TomJohnston, the scheduling constraints of being a weekly paper made it impossible to get above story into print until six days after Jerry's untimely passing. However, the website blogs were posting about him the next day - I was particularly gratified by Nan's subsequent blog, which reposted a lengthy string of tributes and thank-yous to Jerry from earlier comments. Most of us at the Reader are still reeling from the loss of Russ Lewis a few weeks ago, also to Cancer - so many fallen word warriors we've lost, from Judith Moore to Eleanor Widmer and too many others to mention here. Please don't mistake our shock and sadness for disregard -- the entire Reader family is deeply grieving.

A Grant Writer's Story
Well written, local-centric, and ends on a heartwarming note - bravo! I love coming across stuff like this on the Reader site -

Pharmacy, No Kittens
Outtakes: EVER BEEN A CRIME VICTIM? Johnson: “I was once attacked and clocked in the head with a ten inch metal rod and ended up with stitches and staples in my head.” Fullerton: “Yes, but I got revenge, so I can’t tell you about it.” FAVORITE CONCERT? Johnson: “Madonna at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Why? It’s Madonna! Wow, what a performer.” Vee: “Kiss, at the McNichols ‘Big Mac’ Arena in Denver, Colorado! It had God of Thunder sung from 300 feet up in the air, fire billowing from the stage, and who doesn’t love Gene’s big ten-inch? I mean his tongue.” Fullerton: “Megadeth was badass. By living my life, and singing about it, Dave Mustaine saved my life.” MOST VISITED WEBSITES? Johnson: “Facebook, MySpace, and eBay. The usual destinations for musicians.” Fullerton: “Yahoo, Facebook, and MySpace. No particular reason, I just like looking at them.” WHAT REMAINS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? Johnson: 1. “See the Chargers win a Superbowl, It could happen.” 2. “See the Padres win the World Series. Probably won’t happen.” 3. “Travel to Russia. Then I’ll be a happy girl.” WHAT WOULD YOUR GRADE SCHOOL TEACHER SAY ABOUT YOU? Johnson: “That I always paid attention, did my homework, and turned in my work on time.” Vee: “He was a dirty little boy.” Fullerton: “Not a lot.” IF YOU COULD HAVE A FREE MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION? Johnson: “Vogue. What can I say, I’m a chick.” LAST TIME YOU GOT YELLED AT? Johnson: “When I lost my boyfriend’s Xbox cord. He was pissed, but we eventually found it.” Vee: “My friend Christel from North Carolina yelled at me for posting political crap on her online ‘80s forum. I deserved it.” Fullerton: “Today, by you, for giving short, vague answers.”

It weirds me out.” Melina: “Being ripped to shreds.” Dave: “Salmonella.” Samantha: “That I’ll get trapped in or knocked over by a revolving door.” Normandie: “I’m very afraid that I’ll be the target of a serial killer.”— October 20, 2011 2:58 a.m.
The current War lineup includes Tijuana native Saladro Rodriguez.— October 5, 2011 7:20 p.m.
Probably not --— October 1, 2011 6:42 p.m.

4.” The Tall Ships (featuring former Dryve drummer Keith Andrews) will reissue their sophomore album On Tariffs and Discovery in a vinyl edition (300 copies, 180 gram white wax), with a record release show at the Soda Bar on October 22.— September 28, 2011 7:25 p.m.
Funny enough, my grandfather used to call me a Scheisse, which means ‘little sh*t’ in German.”— September 28, 2011 6:46 p.m.
Please don't mistake our shock and sadness for disregard -- the entire Reader family is deeply grieving.— September 28, 2011 5:48 p.m.
A Grant Writer's Story

Johnson: “Madonna at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Why? It’s Madonna! Wow, what a performer.” Vee: “Kiss, at the McNichols ‘Big Mac’ Arena in Denver, Colorado! I deserved it.” Fullerton: “Today, by you, for giving short, vague answers.”— September 14, 2011 2:39 p.m.
