City Heights, now East North Park

I spent nearly a decade living on 37th Street, half of it a block south of University and the other half a block south of El Cajon Blvd. Other than the occasional hooker parade on El Cajon, the only crime-related problem I ever saw or had was when a guy picked a fight with me at a long-gone video arcade next to the old Academy Theater - been awhile, but I enjoyed the easy access to so many eateries, diverse grocery stores (many ethnic), and enough dollar stores to keep me in leftover casino quarters the whole time I lived there -

Why I Hate Spielberg #4,695: The Ferris Wheel Reversal in 1941

I got to see 1941 debut in San Diego at the much-missed Loma Theater near Midway, my first time in that breathtaking house - I have fond memories of both the theater and the film, maybe because I was crushing on Dianne Kay at the time, but I've not rewatched it since. I should grab the DVD and checkitout, if only to revisit Miss Kay doing her dirty dancing thang (for 1941, anyway).

Thom Beebe: Assassin to Steampunk

Beebe's old band Assassin reunited in 2010 for a show at 4th & B - their story is one of the more intriguing local legends, as one of the most promising "almost famous" rock groups ever to (almost) emerge from San Diego. In defense of Patrick's II, Ric Lee of the Bayou Brothers sent this: "In regards to the Patrick's II issue, I have been playing there since 1984 in many bands. My own band Bayou Brothers have played there since 1996. When the issue came up of a pay cut, the manager called me and explained the situation kindly and professionally. Two weeks ago, I emailed the owner, and he responded right away and we settled our business! Not all bands are having problems with Patricks II. I love playing there and always will!"

Corrections: Should be Dhani (not Danny) Harrison and Lee Scratch Perry (rather than Scrath). As for the local named eLan referenced from Critical Beatdown - people, let's put a moratorium on naming your musical act Elan. You've got the VERY successful Hispanic female San Diegan singer Elan (whose guitarists have included Slash), who filed legal proceedings in 2006 against Mexican male singer Elan Atias of the Wailers when he began using just his first name Elan to release several solo albums (Shine, etc - see http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2006/aug/31/wh…). There's also the local Art of Elan collective, and now a local noise artist wants to be eLan too??? C'mon, San Diego musicos, show a little originality -- at least with your name, if not the sounds you make --
