Letter to My Reader Friends
Here's hoping 2012 brings better things for all!
— December 28, 2011 1:14 a.m.
Private Eye Rock
Psychosally appears Friday January 13 at Ramona Mainstage and Friday January 20 at Across the Street.
— December 21, 2011 9:54 p.m.
Celia St Croix Digs Bar Eleven
Outtakes: WHO IN YOUR FAMILY DO YOU TAKE AFTER? “I got my sarcasm from my mom, and my analytical mind from my dad.” READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY? “I finally finished A New Earth: Awakening to Life’s Purpose by Eckhart Tolle. Read some parts over and over. Funny how it was my fave book ever before even finishing it.” WORST RIP-OFF? “Probably the two hundred dollars that I didn’t get back from my flex spending account last year. Total bummer!” WHERE DO YOU TAKE OUT-OF-TOWN GUESTS? “Lefty’s Chicago Pizzeria in North Park.” WHO MAKES OUT IN YOUR WILL? “My brother gets all my stuff. He’ll have to figure out what to do with it.”
— December 21, 2011 3:41 p.m.
I Know What You’re Thinking: Mattson2
And what a great photo it is!

Orson Welles's Oscar for
Citizen Kane
Back on the Auction Block
Graver wuz robbed of that Oscar. Welles never paid Graver, instead giving him the Oscar on the set of The Other Side of the Wind, where the trophy was used as a movie prop. Since Welles never signed the Academy agreement about Oscar's custody, it rightfully belonged to Graver, and Welles' daughter should never have been allowed to steal it. Graver's autobiography (released two years after his 2006 death) talks a bit about this. A very colorful character, Graver also directed over a hundred x-rated films, as well as working for B-movie kings like Roger Corman and Fred Olen Ray. I met him briefly when he was inducted into the Adult Video News Hall of Fame, at a ceremony for which I provided a series of cartoon portrait posters - as far as I know, that's the only other "award" Graver ever got for all his years in Hollywood. He died broke - thanks a lot, Beatrice Welles --

Age Is Just a Number
Really enjoying how the local jazz coverage seems to have more than tripled at the Reader, thanks especially to blog posts like this, reviewing area performances!
— December 11, 2011 5:42 a.m.
Don't Take Exit 40
Glad to hear the band has bounced back from this - I'm from Connecticut and know that notorious truckstop very well. Several murder victims have been found dumped on the access roads around it - good thing the guy Smith yelled at chose to flee rather than fight!
— December 7, 2011 1:30 p.m.
Toy-tronica
A good "mainstream" example of circuit bending can be seen in the new They Might be Giants video for their electronic remake of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople," in which they use a hotwired Speak 'N' Spell toy -
— December 7, 2011 12:19 p.m.
Fuzz-Huzzi Revival
Outtakes: WHERE DO YOU HANG OUT? Camp: “Balboa Park.” Baez: “I like random walks pretty much anywhere in town. Walking is always free, and it’s a good way to appreciate our awesome weather.” UNFULFILLED AMBITION? Camp: “Visit Ireland.” Baez: “See my family prosper.” English: “Have a child.” Abdou: “Skydive.” WORST TV COMMERCIAL? Camp: “The General auto insurance military guy gets on my nerves.” Baez: “FreeCreditReport.com commercials make me wanna vomit.” Abdou: “Where’s the beef?” EVER BEEN A CRIME VICTIM? Camp: “I was brutally beaten in Imperial Beach by a bunch of people.” Baez: “I had a knife pulled on me in middle school.” THREE THINGS WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? Camp: 1. “I love to watch sports movies.” 2. “I like to cook.” 3. “I’m a Detroit lions fan. That’s been rough.” Baez: 1. “I love Jesus Christ.” 2. “I have awesome litter-trained rabbits for pets.” 3. “My grandparents raised me.” Abdou: 1. “I shave my arms.” 2. “I love the Bee Gees.” 3. “I have a monkey tattoo. Wanna see?”
— December 7, 2011 12:13 p.m.
Part 5: Famous Movie Poster Rejects You've Never Seen (Exclusive)
At least the Roller Boogie poster had Linda Blair in spandex, which is what got me to the old Frontier Drive-in near Sports Arena to see it fresh outta the cheez-factory. The greatest thing about that were all the attendees in roller skates - ever notice the hill humps designed onto drive-in lots to angle the cars upward?? You should see how those suckers take out roller skaters - by the end of the night, there were so many bloodied bodies that the snack bar looked like an emergency Red Cross outpost -- Rock Aliens is something like Earth Girls Are Easy crossed with terrible vintage rock "opera" movies (The Apple, 20th Century Oz, Lizstomania, et al), produced on a budget akin to Liquid Sky's --

He’ll have to figure out what to do with it.”— December 21, 2011 3:41 p.m.

Orson Welles's Oscar for Citizen Kane Back on the Auction Block
He died broke - thanks a lot, Beatrice Welles --— December 12, 2011 7:54 p.m.
Age Is Just a Number
Really enjoying how the local jazz coverage seems to have more than tripled at the Reader, thanks especially to blog posts like this, reviewing area performances!— December 11, 2011 5:42 a.m.
Don't Take Exit 40
Glad to hear the band has bounced back from this - I'm from Connecticut and know that notorious truckstop very well. Several murder victims have been found dumped on the access roads around it - good thing the guy Smith yelled at chose to flee rather than fight!— December 7, 2011 1:30 p.m.
Toy-tronica
A good "mainstream" example of circuit bending can be seen in the new They Might be Giants video for their electronic remake of "Istanbul (Not Constantinople," in which they use a hotwired Speak 'N' Spell toy -— December 7, 2011 12:19 p.m.

You should see how those suckers take out roller skaters - by the end of the night, there were so many bloodied bodies that the snack bar looked like an emergency Red Cross outpost -- Rock Aliens is something like Earth Girls Are Easy crossed with terrible vintage rock "opera" movies (The Apple, 20th Century Oz, Lizstomania, et al), produced on a budget akin to Liquid Sky's --— December 7, 2011 11:30 a.m.
