That was at Scripps Green here in San Diego, around October 2006.” WHERE DO YOU AND THE TWINS HANG OUT? “With a family with young kids, hanging out isn’t really an option. They need action. Tayari Howard to Resurrect Smooth Jazz Online
Sad to hear, I kept my dial tuned to KIFM for most of the 1980s and well into the '90s. When I first started going to local jazz clubs like the long-gone Blue Parrot in La Jolla, in the early '80s, "Lights Out" jazz was the rage all over San Diego. Some great local bands were in on the sound too, especially Fattburger and New Shooz, and there were probably a dozen top notch venues for them and touring acts to perform around town. You mention Spyro Gyra, who were both great and awful - fantastic live band with a deep catalog of adventurous prog-jazz-rock, BUT saddled with a couple of lame MOR "evergreens" that all audiences seemed to expect them to trot out, like frat boys at a Spirit concert shouting out for FM radio hit "Nature's Way" even while the band was blowing everyone else's minds with crazy-cool freakfests like "Mechanical World." Art Good's "Lights Out" show was where I discovered countless great players and songs - this new "ratings" gauge MUST be faulty, if so-called "smooth jazz" stations suddenly rank 1,000 percent lower then they did under the old system. I bet there are FAR more of us listening and loving than they know.

Sad to hear, I kept my dial tuned to KIFM for most of the 1980s and well into the '90s. When I first started going to local jazz clubs like the long-gone Blue Parrot in La Jolla, in the early '80s, "Lights Out" jazz was the rage all over San Diego. Some great local bands were in on the sound too, especially Fattburger and New Shooz, and there were probably a dozen top notch venues for them and touring acts to perform around town. You mention Spyro Gyra, who were both great and awful - fantastic live band with a deep catalog of adventurous prog-jazz-rock, BUT saddled with a couple of lame MOR "evergreens" that all audiences seemed to expect them to trot out, like frat boys at a Spirit concert shouting out for FM radio hit "Nature's Way" even while the band was blowing everyone else's minds with crazy-cool freakfests like "Mechanical World." Art Good's "Lights Out" show was where I discovered countless great players and songs - this new "ratings" gauge MUST be faulty, if so-called "smooth jazz" stations suddenly rank 1,000 percent lower then they did under the old system. I bet there are FAR more of us listening and loving than they know.— March 2, 2012 2:18 a.m.
