Pinback: Information (and bass) Retrieved
We put it up on the Breaking Music News feed the night it happened, and pulled it down after a week or so had passed and the news was stale. I think CityBeat had it on a blog a coupla days later, and then did the story in their next print edition. It's a matter of some amusement 'round here, and no small amount of pride, how many CityBeat AND UT stories nowadays seem to be sourced from Breaking News first reported on the Reader site. At this point, the majority of the Reader's best content, including/especially the site blogs like Jam Session and News Ticker, can only be found online. I'd hate to see the print edition, with 40 years of history, fade away - but it's clear that the actual factual NEWS component of this newspaper mostly happens on the website now.

Pinback: Information (and bass) Retrieved
The Reader was first to report last month's stolen bass incident, within 10 minutes after the incident occurred, not CityBeat. No reason to hide our light under a bushel, as it were, especially now that the internet has made such instant news coverage a highlight and mainstay of this website's local music coverage! Tho I suppose it could be said that Facebook and Twitter actually broke the news, since Smith posted about the axe getting hijacked just before going back onstage.

Town & Country Con
Outtake: Lou Curtiss recalls performing at several early San Diego Comic Cons with Captain Marvel creator C.C. Beck. “He played harmonica, and we got together and jammed a little bit.” Once the owner of over 2,000 comic books (“I remember buying the first issue of Superboy”), Curtiss tells an all too familiar tale, second only to “My mom threw them away,” but with a unique twist. “I got out of high school and had a girlfriend, and she talked me into selling all my comic books,” he says with regret. The twist? “I donated the money to John F. Kennedy, when he ran for President.” Curtiss collected comics again after he married, at least until “They got to where they were about a buck apiece, and I said the hell with it. They’re too damned expensive now.” “So I went back to my records.” More Reader coverage of Comic Fest can be found at

Rob Deez’s Hobbit Name Would Be Brown Paper Baggins
Outtakes: EVER BEEN ROBBED? “In 2010, a girl stole my heart. I’ve been messed up ever since. There’s a reward out there if anyone finds it.” WORST INJURY? “I once broke my collarbone skateboarding. Ended my pro career.” WHAT SCARES YOU? “Cockroaches are freaking disgusting.”

Halloween DVD Picks
I saw Suspiria new in theaters and have followed Argento's work ever since, right up thru his recent entries for the Masters of Horror TV show. I definitely concur with Suspiria as an excellent Halloween pick, especially for anyone unfamiliar with his work (the wonky soundtrack work by rock-goth-noise band Goblin was never better). Inferno, not so much - if I had to choose a top two, I'd rank Argento's Demons as better double feature fodder, concerning a mysterious Brigadoon-like cursed movie theater...

Battle of the Bouncers - Concert Security Wars
Tommy Dahill sent this comment, along with a link to his related video: "I absolutely refuse to go to the House of Blues, as their security are apes. Getting frisked to the point of having my nads groped, seeing girls treated brutally, incenses me. What I find particularly heinous is that other people just accept it. I tell every friend who has a gig there WHY I'm not going, and I'm usually met with 'Yeah, I know, but...'" "There seems to be a world of difference between upstairs and downstairs shows. Upstairs, things are as they should be. This song is my take on it (and it's a very seldom played song, so please forgive its roughness)."
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4sP3iwnLx-Y
"I'm sure that you will find loads of condemning anecdotal evidence. For what it's worth, I decided to give them a last chance and saw Motorhead in 2011. The staff was, of course, super aggro, but the crowd was exceptionally amicable and everyone took care of each other. Nobody was allowed to get in a position so that security could interfere. Motorhead brings out the best in people."

Weird celeb phone calls pt. 1 - Traci Lords & (maybe) Bob Dylan
It just now occurred to me that my Dylanesque caller mentioned doing shows around Berlin at the same time as Rick Danko - he might have been referencing Roger Waters' staging of The Wall in Berlin, with Danko and the Band as part of the production, in July 1990. The Dylan tour database says Dylan was playing Hamburg and Berlin in July 1990, and then Belgium and Switzerland...curiouser and curiouser...

I'd hate to see the print edition, with 40 years of history, fade away - but it's clear that the actual factual NEWS component of this newspaper mostly happens on the website now.— October 19, 2012 8:58 p.m.

The Reader was first to report last month's stolen bass incident, within 10 minutes after the incident occurred, not CityBeat. No reason to hide our light under a bushel, as it were, especially now that the internet has made such instant news coverage a highlight and mainstay of this website's local music coverage! Tho I suppose it could be said that Facebook and Twitter actually broke the news, since Smith posted about the axe getting hijacked just before going back onstage.— October 19, 2012 7:44 p.m.

They’re too damned expensive now.” “So I went back to my records.” More Reader coverage of Comic Fest can be found at http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/out-about/2… and http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/jam-session…— October 17, 2012 12:49 p.m.
“Cockroaches are freaking disgusting.”— October 17, 2012 11:55 a.m.
Inferno, not so much - if I had to choose a top two, I'd rank Argento's Demons as better double feature fodder, concerning a mysterious Brigadoon-like cursed movie theater...— October 17, 2012 11:03 a.m.
This song is my take on it (and it's a very seldom played song, so please forgive its roughness)." http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4sP3iwnLx-Y "I'm sure that you will find loads of condemning anecdotal evidence. For what it's worth, I decided to give them a last chance and saw Motorhead in 2011. The staff was, of course, super aggro, but the crowd was exceptionally amicable and everyone took care of each other. Nobody was allowed to get in a position so that security could interfere. Motorhead brings out the best in people."— October 16, 2012 2:44 a.m.
The Dylan tour database says Dylan was playing Hamburg and Berlin in July 1990, and then Belgium and Switzerland...curiouser and curiouser...— October 12, 2012 11:47 p.m.
