The RIAA members who sent Next Level the DMCA warnings were ABKO (Rolling Stones' older hits label, Brown Sugar) and Cal IV Entertainment (Keith Urban music).
Gilberg explains why their licensing efforts centered on the Guitar Hero and Rock Band artists: "The younger generation are exposed to the classic rock hits via the games, so it gives name recognition - Sweet Home Alabama and Freebird for example - and the older generation loves to learn and play these, as well songs from their youth. These classic songs are much easier to get approval for than current hits...We have contracted a licensing agency in Los Angeles that processes our requests." — October 29, 2008 11:54 p.m.
The EMI lawsuit, filed November 9th last year, alleges that MP3tunes "does not own the music it exploits, nor does MP3tunes have any legal right or authority to use or exploit that music."
Sideload.com was launched in early 2006, offering users access to "29,000 songs from more than 7,000 different artists," according to its initial press release. "No music is actually stored on Sideload.com," Robertson told the Reader last year. "Only links to files that are publicly available elsewhere on the net are collected." New links are frequently added, with the site's current list containing approximately 100,000 songs.
"It's possible some of the tracks may be unauthorized," Robertson said last year. "But the difference between Sideload and [the original] Napster is that we're simply a search engine; we're no different than Google. You can type that song name into Google or MSN or Yahoo! and chances are you're going to find the same song [link].... All we're doing is providing a nice interface where you can play it...." — October 15, 2008 5:51 p.m.

Online Outtakes: FIRST BOOK YOU RECALL READING? “The Bible. It was mostly about giant spiders from another dimension that count cards and rip off all the Vegas casinos. There were some pretty hot inter-species sex sequences, and a rad motorcycle chase scene in which the hero escapes from the spiders' lair in Reno.” YOUR VISION OF HOW THE WORLD WILL DIE? “In the year 3057, humans will see the error in their ways and end all war. Seeing this as a sign of weakness, the giant spiders from Dimension Z will attack earth, and wipe the entire planet off the face of existence. Like in the Bible.”— October 22, 2008 9:26 p.m.

RIP Marc - it was always easy to spot him in a club. He cut a striking figure; tall, gaunt, with long dark hair and features molded as if wrought by Anne Rice herself. Among his many creative accomplishments, Marc also co-founded a local independent comic book publisher, Invincible Studios. It doesn't seem like it's really been over five years since he turned me on to his Crimson Moon mixtape, or took me on my first visits to Chef Tony's and the Wickiup... =sigh= You're thought of often and missed every day, Marc.— October 22, 2008 9:19 p.m.

The Leno bit, coming just a few months after the group’s 2008 Grammy nod, was a bit odd. His L.A. audience seemed to find the band name hysterical, notwithstanding the young accident victim’s devastating injury. Other locals in the mass media: During the last week of September, Greg Laswell’s song “How The Day Sounds” was heard on TV’s 90210 revival (September 23). Two nights later, his tune “And Then You” turned up in the season premiere of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. This week, players of Rock Band 2 will be able to add Ratt’s “Round and Round” to their game selections (October 19), while Ratt singer Stephen Pearcy can be heard singing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” on the just-released “We Wish You A Metal Xmas and a Headbanging New Year.” Seriously. Talk about your nightmare before Christmas.........— October 15, 2008 5:40 p.m.

Gary Heffern of the vintage local band the Penetrators says "Oh yeah, here's another story for you...the night before the clash played that show with the standbys, they came to an after-prom show that we played with the paladins at...I'm thinking La Jolla (?)...I remember I had a broken foot (my main toe-bone came up through the top of my foot, during an on-stage flip in Arizona...had to spend 5 days in the hospital on that one, and wait for swelling to go down, so they could re-break and re-set it)...anyways, I remember doing the show in pajamas and a cane, which strummer and company kept stealing during our show....man I loved the clash...also, after all these years, I actually have had some contact with the world famous lou skum from the injections... Ah, San Diego I still love and hate you from the bottom of my little punk rock heart." Gary Heffern— October 9, 2008 10:57 a.m.
