Opera board still looking for donors
If the board voted delay the close once, what is to stop them from voting to delay the close again. What is to stop them from instituting some changes? Lack of imagination, initiative? Hopeless dependence on Ian and Ann Campbell? Who are the 8 newer members of the board who didn't have to pony up $25,000, who ensured the vote to close down? Why did the board approve their membership as voting members under rules different from every other board member? What sort of major changes would you say the biggest donors would like to see?— April 2, 2014 7:09 a.m.
Opera board still looking for donors
But--I did read somewhere that as part of the public record, it could be seen that the SD Opera had contributed to 401K accounts for Ian and Ann Campbell. It would surprise me if those funds could be held on to by SD Opera with other funds in a bankruptcy, but then I am no expert.— April 1, 2014 1:28 p.m.
Ed talks out of school
Good question. At what point would this be determined to be job abandonment?— March 31, 2014 9:14 p.m.
Opera board still looking for donors
The Save San Diego Opera website has about 19,500 signatures now--and I love reading the comments from all over, from opera singers, to instrumental musicians, to students hoping to find careers in opera, to those who travel to San Diego for the opera---so many comments regarding how important opera is as an expression from the heart, combining all of the humanities into one art form. So many pleas. I hope that those who will make these momentous decisions will consider all the larger issues and not simply think about what suits them, or what is easiest. I hope that there will be no metaphoric bloodletting, just people setting to the task of figuring things out.— March 31, 2014 8:20 p.m.
Ed talks out of school
Is Ms. Neylon speaking with anyone these days, or is she "out of the office" or "in a meeting", or "on the phone" with someone else, or "behind closed doors", or any of the other euphemisms employed when those in authority are not interested in hearing what the community has to say? Can someone please tell me why all these politicians promise to be our voice, our contact, our touchstone, our representative when they are campaigning, but once they hold office they do absolutely nothing?— March 31, 2014 8:12 p.m.
Opera board still looking for donors
Three lawyers. Is it terrible for me to ask if they arranged for payment in advance? I can only hope that information requested is forthcoming, and that somehow all the voices will be heard. I'd also really like to know what Opera America has to say about all this, as it sounds like last year they tried to figure things out and come up with solutions, but were dismissed.— March 31, 2014 5:02 p.m.
Letter sent by San Diego Opera board members today
Word is out that this effort has bought two more weeks. Anyone have more information?— March 31, 2014 4:55 p.m.
Ed talks out of school
There is no doubt in my mind that this is a textbook case for 'bad faith' negotiating. By hook or by crook, Ed likes to get his way. We are sick of Ed, sick of his ways, and sick of Cartmill and McCann's inability to act in any way as a responsible, thinking, breathing trustee should. Again, I call out the words of Ruth Chapman, who apparently figured Ed Brand out before anyone else did. "If Ed Brand's lips are moving, he's lying." Yes, BBQ, the county or the state, or some authority should step in, as Ed continues to trample over the rights of the teachers for fair negotiations, the rights of the students to be taught in classrooms that are not a crowded mess and the rights of the taxpayers to pay for educational materials, not new headquarters for Ed, not offices for figurehead jobs for friends of Ed, not real estate deals, not deals with sketchy "universities", not any of the nearly innumerable schemes and scams run by Fast Eddy, he who must view himself as somehow immune to the rule of law. Education in this school district will be destroyed if he is allowed to continue in this way. McCann? Cartmill? As they are already laughingstocks, maybe they could become a team act and go on the road, but who would hire them?— March 31, 2014 12:09 p.m.
The inside story of San Diego Opera's demise
It is becoming clear that Mr. Campbell seems to have preferred the destruction of SD Opera rather than finding someone who would take over from him, even if that person would have had an uphill job in an economy that has still not fully recovered from 2008. What is that but selfishness? And narcissism. And hubris, as has been mentioned. Grand ego--not surprising for his line of work, but to destroy the entire company? How completely out of line that is. How out of touch most of the board members must be that they meekly went along with this. I hope they have awakened from their stupor--those that actively voted to disband--and are rethinking what all of this means.— March 31, 2014 11:44 a.m.
The inside story of San Diego Opera's demise
I don't think this is happening just to draw attention to the plight of the SD Opera. I think this is happening because Ian Campbell has felt far too much ownership of this opera company, didn't want to train anyone to take over from him, concluded that he could devise a way to really "clean up" on his way out of town, and then set about with his plan. Learning of the recent additions to the board (8 new members in the past couple of months who were NOT required to pony up the $25,000 that all the other board members had to) indicates to me that there was indeed much planning going on. Sickening.— March 31, 2014 11:38 a.m.
