Afternoon at the (final?) opera
Let's all hope that the rallies will carry the day, and the renewed strength of the SD Opera Association will mean something! The demise of SD Opera should not take place, at least like this, with financial questions unanswered, with suggestions that what is behind this is a property sale that would benefit the football stadium crowd...as if building the football stadium on the corpse of SD Opera would be a good idea. Was the thought that Ian and Ann could get out of town with a bit more loot that way? This seems like the back story is being revealed to be more and more sordid. I for one am glad to hear of law suits slapping the board. Maybe their eagerness will be tempered by some actual cogent thinking. Because even if Ian and Ann leave town, what of the rest of the board? Those remaining in the thrall of the great Impresario might be cleaning the egg of their faces for quite some time. Might be time for some further thought.— April 16, 2014 3:13 p.m.
Might Chargers eye property occupied by opera studio?
This sounds about right (or really, really wrong--really). I wonder if the committee notes record the cooking up of this scheme? (Another reason it is so difficult to comply with the request from the 8 board members)? Would they have been that consciencious, while being that devious? White collar crime as committed by the upper crust, who never expect anyone to examine things too closely... I am really hoping that the SD Opera Association will become the deus ex machina. It would be a triumph of the law in most amazing form! Monteverdi lives!!— April 16, 2014 2:59 p.m.
Afternoon at the (final?) opera
I am glad you had the opportunity to be there, Ms. Luzzaro. What can be said? If the Campbells get away with destroying SD Opera and leaving town with their $3 intact, San Diego will have been had. We really do need some legal eagles to make sure that doesn't happen. After spending years pleading for legal intervention from the Sweetwater multiple and egregious messes, dare we hope that someone in authority will actually wake up and respond in time to keep this opera company from being unnecessarily crushed? What about that recent report about employment rates in San Diego? Are we doing so well that we can afford to let some 500 jobs go--when these are highly skilled and valuable people?— April 14, 2014 12:14 p.m.
San Diego Opera head says all want to save company
Don't know if you saw a reply I made a while back...re: the great reduction in holdings. Is there a way to find out who was handling the investments for SDO? What if someone took out funds...because I did a fairly simple calculation and if someone removed approx. $4 million from investments, with the 30% market increase, they could have ended up with the $2.2 million. All conjecture on my part, but might explain why this bunch does not want to open up the books.— April 14, 2014 10:44 a.m.

Thanks for this update. I had heard there would be a candlelight vigil at 4 pm this afternoon, so the 80 protesters might have been a part of that. We can't let this happen. Thank you Mr. Bauder for your great work in chasing this down, finding the right people to talk to and cracking through barriers. There must be some sort of financial oddity behind all this--your spotting the loss of millions of holdings during a time when the market went up 30% might be key to why the board does not want more info released.— April 13, 2014 8:29 p.m.

Wow. Who was handling the funds? That is a great deal of capital to disappear. I think some light should be shed on what happened there!! Do you think this is part of what they have been trying to hide? Is it crazy to say this, but someone could have taken about 4 million out, and if the remaining stock rose that 30%, they would end up with the $2.2 million.— April 13, 2014 8:18 p.m.
Opera: Campbells could get up to $3 million more
I appreciate your sense of outrage--one hopes that some legal entities are looking into things. I doubt anyone will take responsibility for this. Those who should will probably just say they were doing what Ian Campbell told them to do, which is really a version of the excuse that is not supposed to work "just following orders". The board members, though, did get rid of the previous board president as well as Opera America about a year ago. I have to think that is because those who wanted to try and take the situation in hand to make sure SD Opera could survive were in the minority. At any rate, they were not towing the Ian Campbell party line, and so were sent off. Lots of problems. We need total access to records. I also think it is time for depositions. How can an organization supposedly run by the business leaders of San Diego be in such a mess? Because the business leaders were not running it, Ian Campbell was, and he was running it for his own benefit.— April 13, 2014 7:58 p.m.

San Diego Opera head says all want to save company
It was the teaser on the Voice of San Diego email earlier this morning, "A former IRS official tells inewsource that the San Diego Opera's contract with Ian Campbell and his former wife could trigger an investigation from the state attorney general" But a comment on the article from ienewsource was very informative regarding opera membership. If you have time, please read what cvg says on the KPBS.org article previously mentioned. Has to do with the 2012 990 form and the quorum change. This commenter believes the form would indicate the quorum change is for the SD Opera Association, not the board meetings...so I would think a very close reading of all that would be a good idea. Could be the fly in the ointment...for those who want to shut down. There's more, but I think people should read this for themselves.— April 12, 2014 1:41 p.m.
