Campbells on leave; SD Opera taking donations
Ok, I tried three times and will need to speak with someone in the office on Monday.— April 26, 2014 7:54 p.m.
Guilty Trustees (is not, unfortunately, a band name)
Yes, I do hope that there will be follow-through on the Gandara pension. Would the County Board of Ed be responsible for that? (It does my heart good to find out just what they are supposed to be doing).— April 26, 2014 4:55 p.m.
Millions for football in San Diego, zilch for opera
Can we trade "Nixon In China" for an opera to be named later?— April 25, 2014 1:46 p.m.
Balboa Theatre named one of world's 15 best
I have attended about 10 events at the Balboa Theatre; sight lines and acoustics are always good. Everyone I know says there isn't a bad seat in the house. Out of curiosity, is there much info on the architect? Because whoever they were, they did a great job...of course the lobby is tiny, but I would guess the architect was told to get a certain number of seats inside certain dimensions.— April 25, 2014 1:42 p.m.
Campbells on leave; SD Opera taking donations
Thanks for your gifts of reporting and monetary support!!! I hope the SD Opera realizes how much you have assisted them in turning the tide!— April 25, 2014 1:38 p.m.

I am certainly not a party to inside info, but after watching the Sweetwater antics all these years, I have reached the conclusion that Fast Eddy has always been interested in what he can do for himself. So if he is in the cross-hairs...well, how many times has he crossed the line? The lines have crossed back?— April 25, 2014 12:42 p.m.
Campbells on leave; SD Opera taking donations
Is the $1 million needed by May 19th in addition to the $1 million Carol Lazier pledged--? I am thinking it must be. I did read that part of that pledged $1 million went to create the OperaAmerica plan to save SD Opera. This is good news, and I hope that the fundraising efforts will work.— April 25, 2014 12:32 p.m.
Guilty Trustees (is not, unfortunately, a band name)
So are we now saying this is the wake-up call? Or will the inestimable Ed Brand take this as implicit support for all of his further dealings? I hope not. I hope that Mr. Cartmill will start standing up for what this community really wants: good leadership, good decision-making, intelligent usage of public dollars. No secret deals, scams and plots for further expansion of Sweetwater into a multi-national corporation...stick with education 7 - 12, plus the adult-learner programs that support job training and English language acquisition. Stop with the games. Do your jobs honestly and completely. Respect the citizenry, instead of openly mocking and ignoring them during the public comments at board meetings. Stop acting like the stereotype of the entitled teenager, McCann. Grow up and accomplish something besides self-promotion. You don't have much time left. See what you can do to repair all the damage you have done.— April 25, 2014 4:31 a.m.
Millions for football in San Diego, zilch for opera
New motto for San Diego: Small Minds Thinking Big! I know San Diego can do better, and be better than that. With groups of people who really do tackle problems and challenges in certain areas, such as Carol Lazier working to ensure the SD Opera continues, San Diego has a chance to keep what is best and improve the rest. By the way, can anyone explain to me why someone gets a salary of $13,000/month to oversee the shutting down of the Balboa Park Centennial Committee? Doesn't that seem ridiculous any way you look at it?— April 24, 2014 9:50 a.m.
Millions for football in San Diego, zilch for opera
May I summarize, just to see if I am getting all this: so you think much of what is going on with regard to the convention center plans, the talk of hosting the Olympics in 2024 and the new football stadium is really to benefit the hoteliers, and provide opportunities for "heads in beds"? At any cost? With little to no regard for the overabundance of convention space, and absolutely no regard for those who will be footing the bill for the next 75 years? How could all this be handled by people who can't put together a birthday celebration for Balboa Park? Who have run out of steam one year shy of the SD Opera's 50th Celebration? It looks like the lights may be on in San Diego, but NO ONE IS HOME!!! Leadership by the greedy and small-minded is just not going to work.— April 24, 2014 8:56 a.m.
