Ian Campbell blasted in opera magazine
What continues to astonish me about the whole business is the way the board was ignoring the membership, who were supposed to vote on such items as shutting everything down. Not to mention that all the musicians, backstage people, office staff, etc., were treated as though they were valueless. Ian Campbell's massive ego might just as well have been a block of wood for all the good it did him--may he continue to learn some lessons in his remaining time on earth.— August 18, 2014 7:01 a.m.

I suppose if they really miss opera, they will just go to SF or LA.— August 17, 2014 1:02 p.m.
Unconventional logic
You very likely have a more accurate count than I heard. Still, it is a shock that a water pipe could fail to that degree, in an area where it is thought everything is very well maintained. Here is something I also heard--as an aside to this story--that pipes are failing all over, and in fact some pipes have completely rusted through, but the water is following along the lines as the soil is clay. I really think all cities need to look into all the water, sewer, storm drains and gas lines because when things go wrong, they really go wrong.— August 17, 2014 8:19 a.m.
Deported U.S. military veterans activate in Tijuana
I think it is a great idea to link up with all the other deported Vets--organize, educate each other, and as some problems are solved, those in the improved condition can perhaps continue helping all the others. Perhaps it would also be a good idea for all those serving who are not citizens of the US, but intend one day to become citizens, to start that process as soon as possible, while military legal departments can assist. (Forgive me if I state the obvious).— August 17, 2014 8:09 a.m.
Sweetwater district’s mellow ruse
This list is so ridiculous! And it doesn't begin to include all the property that this district is paying for (can't say "owns", because of some of the technical arrangements due to those pesky rules about superfluous properties needing to go out to bid to other educational entities!!!). So, tell me again because I get so confused--where does L street fit in with this?— August 17, 2014 8:05 a.m.
Olympic committee to palm off training center?
anniej, here is part of the problem--how many issues can the public keep track of at one time? The problem with SDG & E/Sempra and the power station as reported in the Star-News is something I wish I had time to follow, comment on and speak with Chula Vista officials about. The substation Chula Vista will end up getting will have a higher profile and be in a location that is suboptimal, from a design standpoint. (Too close to the bay, so that the profile will impair views). I wish I had been active on that, because they pulled a fast one on Chula Vista, sad to say. What is really going on with the OTC? Are things really exactly as reported? Where will the people who are now training there end up going? Is it the hope that Chula Vista can somehow take over, and the Olympian hopefuls can keep training there for a fee? If the OTC bails, and the city of Chula Vista does not opt to take over, does the property go into default, whereupon it can be bought by anyone and converted into anything? Are there stipulations which must be followed? You ask, anniej, where is the community with all of its concerns and discontent? Well, it is the end of summer, and it is hot out. Maybe they are at the beach. We need better community involvement, certainly. But it would be nice to get at least one big community issue solved before we need to jump in and work on something else!!!— August 17, 2014 7:59 a.m.

Yes, but in that three week time period, what happened? Did Ian Campbell's girlfriend issue him an ultimatum?— August 17, 2014 7:47 a.m.

Ok, this is important, you are right. When did the inner circle decide that it was time to fold? In the article, Mr. Merrill said (if I am recalling correctly) that he looked at the numbers that were handed out to the group the day Mr. Campbell announced that the opera needed to be shut down. Then, at some point, he found the numbers that had been given out some three weeks before, when things were still just ducky. They were the exact same numbers! So, what had happened? I sure don't know, but I am wondering if he had just been given word that some of the big donors would not be coming through? Which does seem a bit odd to me, as this year has been overall a good one in the stock market, so the Opera Divas/Angels should have been doing well, and so should the investments of the rest of the board members. I think there is still something we do not know. Maybe it has to do with some of the law suits about creating a hostile environment, and Ian Campbell didn't want any more of that to go public? By the way, I continue to amuse myself with visions of a golf foursome of Mr. Campbell, Larry Anderson, Ed Brand and the recently deposed head of the SD port district, whose name escapes me at the moment. Got it! Wayne Darbeau. Although he doesn't seem quite as much of an offender as the others.— August 16, 2014 10:45 a.m.

Exactly!! Wouldn't it be great to have some Gilbert & Sullivan in the summer, along with a couple of other lighter works! (And, maybe it is just me, but if the Civic Center Plaza could be steam cleaned once every 20 years, it might be a great deal more pleasant. There is so much grime that you might as well be riding the New York subway in the 1970's. But, I digress...)— August 16, 2014 8:22 a.m.
