Voiceless children of San Ysidro
That is interesting about Mr. Anderson. Those members of the County Board of Education who are temporary appointees to the Sweetwater Board of Trustees seem very bland on the surface, and not all that inclined to look below the surface. Getting through to them is not easy, because they seem to have decided that their main goal is to get everyone to quiet down and behave. While the local school district is still wildly out of whack.— October 14, 2014 9:42 a.m.
Sweetwater's new safety school
I do appreciate your broad snark. I think that the facility might be more appropriate for the detention of spate of administrators and board members, however. They might even be inclined to figure out how to redevelop the property while settling in. I can see it now: "The Ed Brand Wing for the Exceptionally Corrupt". View property, high ceilings, quiet neighborhood--make this your new home away from home! For the public servant and/or administrator who can no longer discriminate between right and wrong.— October 14, 2014 9:31 a.m.
Finale or interlude?
Yes, some very wonderful operas were staged by Campbell. But I still wonder if the investigations are ongoing. I am inclined to think that there was more than a little "rannygazoo" that took place with regard to the endowment, entertainment expenses, perks given to big donors, etc. Not to mention the tax element--if the big donors claimed the entire amount as a deduction, when in fact they quite easily could have benefitted from their level of donation. But I am delighted the opera exists. What would be really great would be if under the new management the opera could flourish, be enjoyed by many new fans and bring all this to parts of this area for whom it is relatively unknown. They seem to be poised for that very thing.— October 14, 2014 9:24 a.m.
Corruption charges be damned
Bonds are a mystery to me. I will leave them to the initiated!— October 13, 2014 7:33 p.m.
Finale or interlude?
I wish the couple every happiness. Is the California AG still investigating the debacle that almost happened? Back from the edge, let's hope SD Opera manages to mend fences with all those Mr. Campbell undeservedly gave short shrift to. Apparently Mr. Campbell felt that anyone who was "local" was not good enough for SD Opera. The short-sightedness of this mindset is very clear: what if people at SF Opera thought that way? Then, Fredericka Von Stade wouldn't have been allowed to sing in San Francisco, as she was living across the bay in Alameda. I certainly hope that all singers who have been treated this way remind SD Opera that they are here, they are talented, and they are ready and willing. The best way to demonstrate that SD Opera is alive and well is to welcome available talent, embrace it and find a place for it.— October 13, 2014 7:29 p.m.
Voiceless children of San Ysidro
I really don't think that union bosses are controlling the school board. What I believe is happening is that teachers have been pushed around for the past several years, what with great budget cuts mandated by state shortfalls in funding, bad leadership from various school districts and all the "reform" efforts that are really all about dismantling public education as we know it. As a result, many teachers have realized the need to be more politically active than they have in the past, so that the voices of the teachers will be heard. That is not a bad idea. We need to hear from all sides, all voices are welcome in public discourse. It is, of course, helpful when rhetoric is ramped down rather than up, so all of us can focus on practical, reasonable solutions to the various problems at hand. Please don't make teachers out to be the enemy. They most definitely are not the enemy. The teachers' unions aren't the enemy either. The enemy is those who would shut down all of our voices, who in fact did their very best to shut down our voices, and those names included are Jim Cartmill and John McCann. They worked very hard to disenfranchise everyone in Sweetwater school district, by limiting public input, ignoring the serious concerns of the public, doing their level best to confuse the public regarding board meetings, expelling the public from a board meeting, and so forth. Let's remember what we have gone through to get where we are, and remember that we aren't done yet. We need honest, hard-working, reasonable and intelligent people on our school boards--for a change.— October 13, 2014 4:48 p.m.
Could Brown reappoint unpopular Peevey?
So when did he make the switch, and is there a chance he will switch back?— October 13, 2014 4:35 p.m.
Sweetwater board candidate stumps on civility
In just one more surreal aspect of this whole mess, Judge Espana (aka The Uninformed and Willfully Ignorant) ruled that they could run again. When she was confronted with the Ed Code that said if they were to plead guilty they would not be eligible or if they were found guilty they would not be eligible, Judge Espana said she 'was not aware of the Ed Code'. So, because of her ignorance (!?) this was allowed to happen. I have not heard of Judge Espana being called out by anyone--except the public--on this. Apparently IGNORANCE BY A JUDGE IS AN OK EXCUSE! There, got that off my chest. And you are very right. It is confusing. It does not make any sense. It should not have happened. But that is the state of affairs here in Chula Vista, in Sweetwater. Obviously, things need to change.— October 13, 2014 12:43 p.m.
Corruption charges be damned
Thanks, someone at SF Gate seemed to be hinting, but I couldn't figure anything out.— October 13, 2014 12:33 p.m.
Could Brown reappoint unpopular Peevey?
Oddly enough, the young Jerry Brown might have been just the person for this...— October 13, 2014 12:30 p.m.
